Greetings
From the President... Greetings...
OLD WESTBURY WOMEN’S SOCCER
On behalf of SUNY College at Old Westbury, please let me welcome you to this event. Each athletic contest is not only a chance for our Panther teams to compete, but also a showcase for everything our college offers. Please drive or take a walk around campus. As you do, you will notice physical improvements either recently completed or now underway. Speak with our staff or faculty and hear their dedication and the mission of SUNY College at Old Westbury will shine through. And of course, get to know our students. Whether during competition in the spirit of NCAA Division III athletics or during class in one of our more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree opportunities, our students' successes serve as testimony to our College's ability, as Long Island's only four-year public liberal arts and sciences college, to help the leaders of tomorrow realize their dreams. It is my wish that all who participate in this event do so in a spirit of healthy competition. Moreover, I hope the SUNY College at Old Westbury community gives you a reason to visit us again. Thank you for attending.
Sincerely,
Dr. Calvin O. Butts III President State University of New York, College at Old Westbury

Season Preview
Step One - Coach
OLD WESTBURY WOMEN’S SOCCER
For the first time in SUNY College at Old Westbury's history of athletics there will be a women's soccer team. One of the first steps in securing a team for the 2008 season was to find the head coach. The Panthers did just that in hiring Craig Newman. Old Westbury is proud to welcome Coach Newman as head coach of the women's soccer team in its inaugural season. Newman's background of coaching was long and extensive, making him a perfect fit for the Panthers. With 17 years of experience, eight years of which in the United States, he is ready to build a competitive program through a passion and knowledge of the game he acquired in the United Kingdom. Under the direction of Newman, the team will play a competitive schedule and compete in the Skyline Conference. The Old Westbury Women's Soccer team will step into Panther Park for the first time as they compete in their inaugural season this fall.
Step Two - Recruit As the head coach it was Coach Newman’s job to recruit players for the coming season. Generally a team will consist of a mixture of veteran players and young players which would form a cohesive unit. In the case of these Panthers, the young players have to become the veteran players. Transferred players from colleges such as Nassau County Community College, C.W. Post, and Bryant College are among those who have joined Old Westbury. With leadership from transfers and eager freshman, the inaugural season will be a sight to watch.
Step Three - Build For Future Coach Newman has a plan for upcoming seasons to begin building a legacy of success at Old Westbury. The Panthers will continue to look from within at players who have an interest in soccer by conducting open tryouts. Newman plans to keep the program running successfully by using the resources of his roots. Before coming to Old Westbury he worked for the Long Island Junior Soccer League as a coach, which he feels will give him an advantage in attracting women to come play for the program. He has already successfully recruited four players in the upcoming spring and looks to add to the number by the time the 2009 season comes along.
Season Preview As exciting as the beginning of a new program is, it is very difficult to win right away. Coach Newman understands this to be true, but he expects his team to compete in all contests. Optimism for the upcoming season is a must. By keeping an eye on the prize of a successful program for years to come, it must start with game number one. Newman believes that his team will be successful this season, and views finishing around .500 as the goal to achieve. Overachieving would always be welcome, but says he recognizes that it will be a very young team playing together for the first time. This is also an interesting factor, because, unlike many other programs, positions are not set in stone. Other programs recruit players to play in defense, midfield, or attack. This is not so at Old Westbury. "Players are going to play where we feel they are going to be the best use to us as a team," Newman continues, "it is hard to tell where everyone is going to be until you play the first game." This also is helpful for the Panthers as well, because they will be able to use the element of surprise. With a brand new program there is no scouting report for other teams to prepare for, no way for other teams to figure out which is the top scorer or a shut down defender.

Season Preview
Another helpful resource for the Panther's this season could be the addition of Assistant Coach Mark George. Coach George has worked at NOGA with Coach Newman and has been assistant coach with Long Island's professional soccer team, the Long Island Rough Riders. His experience gained as a coach in multiple capacities will prove to be helpful as the women progress through the season. Coach Newman reports he has a great tactical mind and is an asset for the girls.
Defense Defense will be a key to the success of the Panthers in their inaugural season. If the defense plays well, the Panthers will do well. If not, then it could be a long season. However, that does not appear to be a worry due to the upside and depth of the defense. Mikele Reitmayr, a co-captain of Nassau County Community College is a transfer that will provide the defense with a voice of leadership. Jennifer Campisi is a quick, athletic player that has plenty of soccer savvy and will use her smarts to outwit an attacker. Courtney Dixon is a positive thinker that is good from both feet, and provides versatility that could make Dixon a very important player this season. Sherry Buxo, a transfer from Tompkins-Cortland, is a physical asset to the team as well as Melissa Romero, a player who has not played soccer since high school and has been attending Old Westbury. With the forming of the women's soccer team she has decided to put the cleats back on and will provide a strong, physical force to the defense.
Midfield The need for quality midfield cannot be emphasized enough. The ability to play a two-way game helping out on defense while attacking on offense is the standard among very good soccer teams. Old Westbury has depth in the midfield that will be depended upon to guide the team to victories. Some of the key components to the midfield will be Jennifer Campisi, Cassandra Esposito (a small, quick, versatile player) and Courtney Dixon (great with both feet). Jessica Manning, one of two captains transferring from Nassau County Community College, brings brains and leadership to the midfield corps. Melissa Romero and freshman Chryssanti Nicholas will provide the depth that Coach Newman is looking for in his team.
Forwards The Old Westbury attacking line could be the one of the most questionable factors for the season. Without a game played it is hard to tell whether the Panthers will be able to put together an offense that is capable of scoring goals in a big game. As the case with defense and midfield, many players could be thrown into many different positions. Players to look out for on the attacking side of the ball will be Cassandra Esposito, Jessica Manning and a very talented freshman in Alexarose Marcellino.
OLD WESTBURY WOMEN’S SOCCER
"Look out for a big presence from the freshman," is one key Coach Newman believes full-heartedly. Freshman will gain the trust of not only the coach, but the rest of the team, and together could do some surprising things in the Skyline Conference.
Goalkeeper The goalkeeping situation will be handled very uniquely. To find a keeper that could help the Panthers win now, they turned to a star of a different sport. Debra Ciccarelli, a starting pitcher for Old Westbury's softball team, will be slotted between the goal posts. She has experience from high school where she played field hockey. Although, the rigorous effort of a college goalie is tough, it appears that Ciccarelli is up for the challenge and will offer the team a boost with energy and leadership. The fight will be on all season for the Panthers. Not just with other teams, but between each other. They will be fighting for position, fighting to be the best, and fighting for a starting job. When competition for a starting job gets brewing it only brings out the best of talent out of each player, and, if Old Westbury can display their best talent, a successful season is just around the corner.
