Homework In Year One Mathematics homework will be sent home on Wednesdays, our homework will focus on number bonds to 10. Children should be changing their books twice a week (Tuesdays and Fridays) and reading daily. There will also be E-books available on “Bug Club.” It is still important to read to your child so that it is an enjoyable experience for both of you. Spellings will be sent home on a Tuesday ready for the following Tuesday when the children will have their spelling test. We encourage the children to learn the spelling rules learnt in class, not simply the words, as it will support the development of their spelling at a later stage.
Ormskirk CE Primary School The Year One Curriculum
Mathematics This term, we will start to follow the National Curriculum in our Mathematics teaching supported by the Inspire Maths program. First, the children will focus on numbers to 20 and developing a secure understanding of number bonds to 10.
English In the Autumn term, the children in Year One will explore fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts and use these as a stimulus for their own writing. We encourage lots of discussion, role-play and drama before the children compose their own sentences. Children are encouraged to join their handwriting from Reception. Regular practise will be given in school and a copy of the formation will be sent home. Grammar and spelling will be taught daily and reinforced through the texts that we will explore. Lots of fun activities will be used to develop this knowledge and help our children to remember and apply it. In Year One, children are encouraged to develop a love for books during Big Read time and our guided reading sessions. During these sessions children are asked to read aloud and in their head to develop their ability to read with pace, fluency and understanding. There is a high focus on phonics in Year One, it is taught every day. The children are taught to segment and blend words to help them become fluent readers and writers. R.E. During the Autumn term children will be exploring the questions ‘How do Christians say thank you to God?’ and ‘How do some people behave or feel because they believe in God?’
Ormskirk CE Primary School Creative Curriculum This half term we will be studying the topic ‘Why don’t Meerkats live in Ormskirk?’ The children will observe and compare a variety of different animals from different groups. We will have a special visit from some residents of Knowsley Safari park! In Art and Design Technology we will be exploring hot and cold colours and using 3-d Clay to create our own animal. In the second half term children will explore the topic ‘Fire, Fire’. During this topic we will be learning about the Great Fire of London.
P.E. During the Autumn term, Year One P.E. will take place on Wednesday or Friday and Swimming on a Tuesday. Your child will need a swimming costume, towel and a swimming cap (available from school.)
We are very excited for the year ahead and we hope you are too!
