NSIC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week: Wayne State’s Ross Bunchek (Sr., Valparaiso, Ind.) broke his previous WSC school and meet record in the hammer throw at the Wildcat Classic with an impressive season opening mark of 212’ 2”, which is an NCAA Automatic Qualifying Mark and currently ranks him third in Division II and ninth among all athletes in DI, II, and III. He broke his previous personal best by almost six feet with the throw. NSIC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week: MSU Moorhead’s Derek Bredy won the 100m dash at the Lyle Hokanson Memorial Track Meet hosted by North Dakota State University last Saturday. Bredy ran the race in 10.65 seconds, missing the NCAA Provisional Mark by five hundredths of a second. NSIC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week: Winona State’s Jenny Schuler (Sr., Colfax, Wis) broke the school and facility record in the hammer throw with an automatic qualifying throw of 189’ 1” (57.64m) at the Last Minute Invite held at Winona State last weekend. NSIC Women’s Track Athlete of the Week: U-Mary’s Melissa Agnew (Jr., Onamia, Minn.) was a dominating force at the American River Invitational in Sacramento, Calif., on Saturday, March 31. The six-time All-American started her day with a victory in the 1500 meter run with a national automatic qualifying performance of 4:26.80. That effort broke the U-Mary school record by three seconds. She finished the day with an impressive effort in the 800 meter running, winning the event in a time of 2:15.52. Agnew’s time was five seconds better than that runner up and teammate Bri Lynch.

NSIC Team Notes AUGUSTANA Men Track: Augustana’s Gathin Veldhuisen (Sprints/Hurdles, Fr. Pipestone, Minn./Pipestone Area HS) sprinted the 110-meter hurdles in the second fastest time (15.12 seconds) at the Wayne State Classic. Men Field: Dylan Buehler (Javelin, Jr., Lewistown, Mont./Fergus HS) was one of five Vikings from Augustana to place in the top two at the Wayne State Classic. Buehler threw the javelin 176 feet, .03 inches to earn a runner-up finish. Women Track: Molly Kokesh (Mid-Distance, Jr., Scotland, S.D./Scotland HS) finished the mile in 5 minutes, 15.91 seconds to take second at the Wayne State Classic. Women Field: Katie Tonner (Jumps, So., Esko, Minn./Esko HS) holds the top position in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference for the heptathlon after finishing the event with 4,306 points at the Wayne State Classic. She placed second at the meet and was the top finisher in two events, both the 100-meter hurdles (15.88 seconds) and the long jump (17 feet, 4 inches).

NSIC Team Notes Continued Bemidji State The Bemidji State outdoor track season gets underway April 6 when the team travels to St. Paul, Minn. to participate in the Hamline Invite. Concordia-St. Paul In the first outdoor meet of the year for Concordia, the Golden Bears men and women each finished fourth in the St. John’s Invite on Saturday. Men Track: Diahn Zeon ((5-10, Sr., Edina, Minn. /Richfield HS) ) took first in the 100m dash and the long jump to lead the men. Nic Cass (Hortonville, Wis.) also took first in the 5000m for the men. Zeon’s time in the 100m was 11.09 and his distance in the long jump was 22-7 3/4 feet. Cass finished the 5000m in a time of 16:01.55. Dylan Enderlin took second in the 200m dash (22.85) and fourth in the 100m dash (11.48) on the day as well. Zach Pederson took second in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.86. Men Field: Maurice Williams took fourth in the long jump with a jump of 20-4 1/4 feet. Colin Goligoski took fourth in the pole vault with a height of 12-7 1/2 feet. Women Field: Esther Jandrich (Forest Lake, Minn.) took first in the pole vault leading the women. Jandrich’s height in the pole vault was 10-11 3/4 feet edging out her teammate Sarah Pieper who had a height of 10-6. Women Track: Tolu Ojoyeyi took third in the 100m with a time of 12.98. Brittany Dohmen took second in the 400m dash with a time of 60.17 and fourth in the 200m dash with a time of 22.62. Becca Richter took second in the 10000m with a time of 40:59.18. Katie Ellis took second in the shot put with a throw of 40-17 1/2 feet. Britt Bickert also took second doing so in the javelin with a toss of 118-4 feet. MINNESOTA DULUTH The UMD outdoor track season gets underway April 6 when the team travels to St. Paul, Minn. to participate in the Hamline Invite. Minnesota state Men Field: Junior Tandy Juell (Redwood Falls, Minn.) set a meet record in the decathlon at the WSC Wildcat Classic by accumulating 6,929 points. With his championship performance, Juell eclipsed the provisional mark currently set at 6,300 points. On the day, Juell won the pole vault (14-06.75), discus throw (137-06) and the javelin throw (182-05) while recording seven top three finishes. Minnesota State had athletes competing in two meets this weekend. On the men’s side, MSU sent three multi athletes to Wayne, Neb. to compete in the WSC Wildcat Classic. Junior Tandy Juell won the decathlon with a meet record 6,929 points. Fellow Mavericks Lucas Torres (5,876 points) and Nathan Hancock (5,859 points) also beat the old mark. Torres and Hancock finished in fourth and fifth place respectively. MSU also sent junior Grant Luer to the Central College Invitational. Luer provisionally qualified with a discus throw of 50.62m, surpassing the 49.50m provisional mark. On the women’s side at the Central College Invitational, sophomore Anna Ryan finished in third place (38.80m) in the discus throw. Ryan also finished in 11th place in the hammer throw with a toss of 40.54m. Ryan was joined by freshman Morgan Stampley (45.18m) and sophomore Briana Hendricks (43.89m) in the event. MSU MOorhead The Dragons competed at the Lyle Hokanson Memorial Track Meet at North Dakota State University last weekend. Men Field: Austin Dennis, Ryan Barnes and Michael Bendix all placed in the top three in the men’s high jump. Dennis won the event with a jump of 2.03m followed by Barnes and Bendix tying for the third place position with 1.93m. In the discus throw, Jackson Henrich tied for first place with Roman Waldera of NDSU with a toss of 46.02m. A throw of 44.42m also gave Jackson a third place finish in the discus throw. Christopher Heil claimed the hammer throw with a distance of 59.14m. Men Track: Claiming the 100m dash was Derek Bredy with a finishing time of 10.65 followed by Uchenna Ogbonnaya in third with a time of 11.15. The 110m hurdles was taken by Laquone Robinson with a run of 14.62. Women Track: The 100m dash was taken by Karlene Lorenz, Nicole Hall and Erin Sistad all placing in the top three. Lorenz won the event with a time of 12.48 followed by Hall with a 12.50 and Sistad finishing with a 13.27. Jessica Keesling claimed first place in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.65.Three Dragons placed in the 400m hurdles. Lorenz finished in second with a run of 1:01.74, Ashley Berg placing second with 1:07.41 and Keesling in third with 1:10.93. Women Field: In the discus throw, Heather Schultz won the event with a throw of 38.32m, five feet further than second place. Kara Nygaard claimed the javelin throw marking a toss of 37.80m. Mallory Stier also placed third in both the shot put and discus with throws of 12.18m and 37.50m. Northern State The Wolves open their seasonon April 5-6 at the NSU Open / Multis Events in Aberdeen, S.D.

Dakota Wolf set a school record in in the 5000 and met the provisional standards in the 5000 and the 1500. Jennifer Agnew hit provisional standards in both the 3000 meter steeplechase and the 5000 meter run. Janet Johnson and Kristyn Nelson placed 1-2 in the 100 meter hurdles in provisional qualifying times. The 4x100 meter relay team of Nelson, Johnson, Nicketa Coombs and Kathryn Stewart met the provo standards with a mark of 46.94. Men Field: The U-Mary men combined to win four more events on Saturday. Brent Peltz won the javelin in his first meet of the year with a winning toss of 174-8. Marshall Fryberger cleared 4.54 meters to win the pole vault. Men Track: Chase Dixon (Jr., Grass Valley, CA), a California junior college product, had a tremendous return to his home state. The junior captured both the hurdle races at the American River Invitational in Sacramento, Calif., clipping over the 110 meter hurdles in 15.28 and touring the 1400 meter barriers in 55.80. He also ran legs on the 2nd-place 4x100 meter relay and 4th-place 4x400 meter relay unit… Taylor Thompson paced all competitors in the 5,000 meter run in a clocking of 15:16.40 and Jesse Bennett led all challengers in the 1,500 meter run in a time of 3:59.93. ST. CLOUD STATE Women Track: The Huskies open their season on April 7 at the UW-River Falls Open in River Falls, Wis. Wayne State Men Track: Andrew Jansen (Sr., Omaha, Neb.) placed 2nd in the 400 meter dash with a time of 48.41 which narrowly missed the NCAA provisional national qualifying mark. He also placed 5th in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:57.66. He is currently leading the NSIC in both events. Men Field: Ross Bunchek (Sr., Valparaiso, Ind.) broke his previous WSC school and meet record in the hammer throw at the Wildcat Classic with an impressive season opening mark of 212’ 2”, which is an NCAA Automatic Qualifying Mark and currently ranks him 3rd in Division II and 9th among all athletes in DI, II, and III. He broke his previous personal best by almost 6’ with the throw. Women Field: Carly Fehringer (So., Wayne, Neb.) hit two NCAA Provisional Qualifying Marks on Saturday in both the shot put where she placed 2nd with a mark of 46’ 2 3/4” and the hammer throw where she placed 5th with a mark of 172’ 02”. She currently leads the NSIC in the shot put by almost 2 feet and is 4th in the hammer throw. Women Track: Nicole Brungardt - SO - Norfolk, NE - Brungardt placed 2nd in both the 100 meter dash (12.17) and 200 meter dash (24.85). In addition, she hit an NCAA Provisional National Qualifying Mark in the long jump with a mark of 19’ 0”. She currently leads the NSIC in all 3 events. Winona State Women Field: Jenny Schuler (Senior, Colfax, WI) broke the school and facility record in the Hammer Throw with an automatic qualifying throw of 189’ 1” (57.64m) at the Last Minute Invite held at Winona State. Women Track: Catherine Whitcomb (Freshman, Shakopee, MN) won the 400 meters at the Last Minute Invite with a conference-leading time of 58.50 seconds.
