Men Track: Charles Gilbert - Sprints 6-0 175 Jr. Jacksonville, Fla. Ridgeview HS Webber International Univ. - In his first collegiate meet Gilbert did not disappoint as he was crowned the champion of two separate events at the Holst Invitational. To start off the meet he anchored the men’s 4x100m relay team that took first place in a time of 42.24. In the 100m prelims Gilbert set a meet record with a time of 10.95, what was impressive about the time was that he stumbled out of the gate and the wind chill at the time was 27. He won the 100m with a time of 11.00 in the finals running away from the field. Men Field: Diahn Zeon (Sprints/Jumps 5-11 186 Jr. Edina, Minn. / Richfield HS) took home a pair of first place finishes on Saturday. Dohmen then took home the championship in the 200m dash with a time of 26.86. MINNESOTA DULUTH The UMD men’s track & field team competed this past week in less than stellar weather conditions, as they traveled to St. Paul, MN on Saturday to compete in the Holst Invitational, which has hosted by Concordia-Universty, Men Field: Jason Beutz (SR) won the pole vault with a season best effort of 15-09, and is only 2 inches away from a provisional national qualifying mark, while Joe Deters (SO) was second in the triple jump and 4th in the long jump. Men Track: John Knebel (Jr.,, Pillager, MN) won the 110 meter hurdles in his first meet of the indoor and outdoor track & field season, with a time of 15:04. For the men, in the 100 meters, Jared Grams (JR) (11.27), Jacob Heifort (FR) (11.28), and TJ Struss (FR) (11.37) all set seasonal best times, and qualified for finals. In the 400 meters, Danny Badhwa (FR) was 3rd, Josh Dahl (SR) was 4th, and Paul Kimpling (SR) was 6th. In the 800 meters, UMD placed 5 in the top 6 as Dillon Johnston (SR) was 1st, Lou Hughes (JR) was 2nd, Cole Toepfer (FR) was 3rd, Mark Mickow (SO) was 5th, and Jesse Krause (SO) was 6th. In the 1500 meters, Tyler Stevens (FR) narrowly missed winning the title, as finished second by about a third of second. In the 3000 meter steeple chase Tim Lasch (JR) placed third in a lifetime best time, despite the effects that the extreme cold water had on his legs. In the 5000 meters, Sam Saccoman (FR) was victorious, while Nick Nygaard (JR) was third in extremely windy conditions near the end of the meet. John Knebel (JR), was also victorious on the day in the 110 meter hurdles, which was his first outdoor hurdle race of the season. Unfortunately his 400 meter hurdle race didn’t treat him as well, as he took a nasty fall over a hurdle midway through the race, despite being in the lead at the time. He did recover to jog and finish the race, but thankfully appears to be okay heath-wise. The men’s 4 x 100 relay team set a season best time with the efforts of Heifort (FR), Grams (JR), Nick Pedersen (FR), and Struss (FR) and their 2nd place finish. Women Track: The Bulldogs traveled to Sioux City had an impressive meet coming away with many top places and some personal records. Junior Maggie Demulling won the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.63. The 1500-meter run was a strong race for the Lady Bulldogs coming away with a second, fourth, and seventh place finishes. Senior Carrie Wardell ran a time of 4:37.95 which was a lifetime best for her and only two seconds off of provisionally national qualifying. Junior Morgan Place finished fourth running a time of 4:38.00 and senior Michelle SanCartier coming in seventh for the Bulldogs with a time of 4:43.63.
