NSIC Championships Set for May 10-11 in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The 2013 NSIC Outdoor Championships are set to take place on Fri.-Sat., May 10-11 in Sioux Falls, S.D. at Howard Wood Track - hosted by Augustana College.

NSIC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week: Minnesota State senior Tandy Juell (Redwood Falls, Minn.) finished with 6,926 points and took the crown in the decathlon at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Multi Championships. Juell was in second-place after day one but was able to move up to first by finishing first in the the pole vault (4.65-meters), javelin throw (53.31-meters), and discus throw (41.88-meters). He finished of his scoring by placing second in the 1500-meter run (5:03.66) and fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.27). Ealier during the season Juell provisionally qualified in the decathlon when he finished with 6,997 points at the Emporia State Multi. That mark is sixth-best in the nation. NSIC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week: Augusutana’s Harald Karbo (Distance, Fr., Stord, Norway) improved his provisionalqualifying time in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase and overtook his teammate for the fastest time in the NSIC. At the Drake Relays, Karbo clocked a 9:05.59 to best Travis Beniak’s time by three seconds and give him sole ownership of top spot in the NSIC. Karbo was the fastest Division II racer in the event, taking fifth overall, and has the 12th fastest time in NCAA Division II. NSIC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week: Minnesota Duluth’s Chanel Miller (So Burnsville, Minn. / Apple Valley HS) captured the NSIC outdoor heptathlon title in Aberdeen, S.D. with a school record 4,866 points. That was 109 points better than the previous UMD record, which she set at the same meet one year earlier. Miller, the reigning NSIC indoor pentathlon titleholder, placed first among 13 competitors in two of the seven events (the 800-meter run and 100-meter hurdles) and was second in both the shot put and javelin. NSIC Women’s Track Athlete of the Week: St. Cloud State’s Keely Rubash (Sr., New Lisbon, Wis.) brought home the title and set a new meet record in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 11:14.95 at the Drake Alternative. Her time was also a personal best and a national qualifying provisional time. Rubash also recorded a second place finish in the 800m run posting a personal best time of 2:23.07. Rubash is currently ranked fourth in the conference in the 3,000m steeplechase. NSIC Team Notes Augustana Women’s Track: Anne Pfeifle (Distance, Sr., ) placed seventh in the women’s 5,000-meter run at the Kip Janvrin Open. Pfeifle clocked a 18:21.11 time in her first track event of the year and holds the sixth-fastest time among NSIC runners. Men’s Field: Henrik Holmberg (Multi, Sr., Vik, Norway) finished second in the men’s decathlon at the NSIC Multi-Event Championships after completing day two on Monday. Holmberg finished with 6,823 points and provisionally-qualified for the NCAA Championships in May. The Vik, Norway native entered the day in the lead, but Minnesota State’s Tandy Juell put together an impressive second day to overtake the lead. Holmberg earned eight points for Augustana’s men’s track and field team that will count towards the team score for the NSIC Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Augustana on May 10-11. NSIC Team Notes Continued Bemidji State Women Track: Taylor Sautbine (Sr., Tamarack, Minn.) set a new school record in the 100-meter dash Friday at the Viking Classic in Des Moines, Iowa. She trimmed 0.05 seconds from her own school standard of 12.24 recorded last spring, by crossing the finishing line fourth and stopping the clock at 12.19. Her time also stands as the second fastest 100 of the 2013 outdoor NSIC season. In addition, the senior teamed up as a part of the Beavers’ 4x100-meter dash team that broke the tape in a time of 49.85 to win the event. She also finished third overall and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships with a career-best 4,485 points in the heptathlon at the 2013 Outdoor Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Multi Championships in Aberdeen, S.D. Monday. Her third-place finish earned her All-NSIC laurels. Ashley Larva (Sr., Floodwood, Minn.) and Taylor Sautbine (Sr., Tamarack, Minn.) each posted new school records Friday as they led the Bemidji State University outdoor track and field team at the Viking Classic in Des Moines, Iowa. The seniors headlined a team that placed in the top four in seven different events. Larva clocked a time of 14.41 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles to place second among the field and shave 0.28 from a school mark she set just six days before at the Central Open (14.69). In addition, Larva also took fifth place in the 400-meter hurdles posting a time of 1:06.11. Sautbine’s new school record came out of a fast 100-meter race. She turned in a team season-best mark of 26.36 in the 200-meter dash, while clearing five feet (1.5 meters) in the high jump. The Beavers next travel to Moorhead, Minn. to compete in Concordia College’s Spite the Flood Meet. Events begin at 3 p.m. at Jake Christiansen Stadium. Concordia-St. Paul Men’s Track: Zach Pederson took third in the 110m hurdles (15.12) and sixth in the 400m hurdles (56.97) at the Drake Alternate at Gustavus. Earlier in the week at the Macalester Twilight, he took second in the 110m hurdles (15.24) and 16th in the 400m hurdles (1:01.34). Men’s Field: Nate Thienes had a big week in three different throwing events. He took second in the javelin with a throw of 53.54m, a new personal record at the Drake Alternate on Saturday. Earlier in the week, he placed fourth in the shot put (15.06m) and set a PR and school record in the hammer throw (47.43m) with a sixth place finish at the Hamline Twlight. Women Track: Michelle Ndely broke her own school record in the 100m hurdles twice last week, first at the Hamline Twilight (15.18) where she placed third and then on Saturday at the Drake Alternate with a record time of 15.06 in the prelims before a 15.11 time in the finals to place second. She also helped the 4x100 relay team to a second place finish at the Drake Alternate (50.36) and Hamline Twilight (51.42). Women Field: Erica Young had a pair of top-5 finishes last week in the long jump, first at the Hamline Twilight (4.79m) where she took third, then at the Drake Alternate (4.98m) where she took fifth. University of Mary Men Track: Tracy Lide (Sr., Las Vegas, NV) won both the 100 and the 200 meter sprints at the Al Cassell Relays. He ran a 10.83 into the wind to win the shorter race. The senior then won the 200 in 21.92 into a head wind. Lide finished the day by anchoring the winning 4x100 meter relay team (42.62). Men Field: Dustin Rueb (So., Beulah, ND) won both the high jump and the long jump at the Al Cassell Relays. Rueb went 23-2.75 to claim the long jump and cleared the bar at 6-6.75 to win the high jump. Women Field: Melissa Walker (Sr., Kingston, Jamaica) won both the horizontal jumps at the Al Cassell Relays in Jamestown, ND. The senior AllAmerican leaped a provisional qualifying distance of 18-10 in the long jump and sailed 35-5.75 to also win the triple jump. Walker would also win the 100 meter hurdles (13.86 hand timed) and ran a leg on the winning 4x100 meter relay team (47.38). Minnesota Duluth Women Field: Chanel Miller captured the NSIC outdoor heptathlon title in Aberdeen, S.D. , and did so with some record-breaking numbers -- 4,866 points. Niemann totaled 6,305 points -- the second highest figure in Bulldog history and an NCAA II provisional qualifying mark -- with his top individual finishes coming in the long jump (second place). He also took third in the 100-meter dash, the pole vault and the 400-meter dash. Junior Christopher Reed’s first-place throw of 17.95-meters set a new stadium and meet record on Saturday at the Drake Alternative. He also finished in fifth-place at the Drake Relays with a toss of 17.74-meters. Reed currently hold the fourth-best throw in the nation at 18.05-meters. Men Track: The 4x100 and 4x200-meter relay teams consisting of senior Nicholas Nelson (Lakeville, Minn.), junior Jerrell Hancock (St. Louis, Mo.), junior Carmono Lane (Chicago, Ill.), and sophomore Anthony Gustafson (Faribault, Minn.) won titles and set school records at the Drake Relay’s this weekend. In the 4x100 they finished with a time of 40.16 which is the third-best mark in the nation and in the 4x200 they finished with a time of 1:25.04. Women Track: The Mavericks sprint medley team competed in Des Moines, Iowa at the Drake Relays on Saturday April 27th. The medley team made up of senior Annie Dahl, senior Danielle Jones, sophomore Bonnie Pickford, and sophomore Alexis Dickens finished in eighth place with a time of 4:04.41. NSIC Team Notes Continued Women Field: Sophomore Anna Veroeven competed at the Drake Alternative meet in St. Peter, Minn. on Saturday April 27th and finished in first place with a jump of 11.97m. No. 13 Minnesota State had two relay team win championships at the Drake Relays this weekend. The 4x100 and 4x200-relay teams comprised of senior Nicholas Nelson (Lakeville, Minn.), junior Jerrell Hancock (St. Louis, Mo.), junior Carmono Lane (Chicago, Ill.), and sophomore Anthony Gustafson (Faribault, Minn.) had times of 40.16 and 1:25.04 which also set new school records. Junior Keyvan Rudd (Davenport, Iowa) finished in third-place at the Drake Relays in the high jump (2.12-meters) while junior Christopher Reed (Omaha, Neb.) finished fifth in the shot put (17.74-meters). Reed also set a new meet and stadium record in the shot put at the Drake Alternative with a throw of 17.95-meters. Junior David Pearcill (Apple Valley, Minn.) won the crown in the triple with a leap of 13.97 which was also a new meet record. On the women’s side freshman Faryn Wirkus (Edgar, Wis.) took second place at the Drake Alternative meet with a vault of 3.52m. Junior Sarah Bowler (Circle Pines, Minn.) came in second place in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:16.99. MSU Moorhead Men Track: Keith Turner (Jr., Sprints, San Diego, Calif. / Hoover HS) won two events and also was part of winning the 4x100 relay at the Cobber Twilight on Monday. He won the 200-meter dash at 21.69 -- the fourth-fastest time in the NSIC this year -- and then edged teammate Derek Bredy in a thrilling finish in the 400-meter dash. Turner ran a time of 47.86. He was also the final leg of the winning 4x100 relay which won with a time of 41.86. Women Track: Jessica Keesling (Sr., Sprints/Hurdles, Vadnais Heights, Minn. / White Bear Lake HS) won multiple events for MSUM to lead the women’s team at the Cobber Twilight. She won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.25 and added a win in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:05.51. Minot State Men Track: Tyler Flatland (So., Hurdles, Watford City, N.D.) had a great day, finishing in second place in the 400 meter hurdles with a season best time of 54.09 seconds. Flatland was less than a half a second behind Rashawn Fountain (Unattached) for the title. Farai Madengwe (Fr., Jumps/ Sprints, Harare, Zimbabawe) came in fourth place in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.22 seconds. Men’s Field: Kirk Capdeville (So., Pole Vault, Hinsdale, Mont.) placed ninth at the GAC Invite clearing a height of 14 feet 9.5 inches. Women Track: Allie Helterbran (Jr., Multi, Billings, Mont.) placed seventh in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.99 seconds. Sienna Dailey (So., Sprints, Glasgow, Mont.) also had a solid day, placing fifth in the 400 meter dash with a 59.79 second time. Dailey also placed fourth in the 200 meter dash running a 26.18 in the finals and a 26.08 in the preliminary round. The two women’s relays also had great days as the 4x100 relay, consisting of Abbey Aide (Jr., Pole Vault, Bottnieau, N.D.), Dijah Nash (Fr., Sprints, Fallon, Nev.), Helterbran and Dailey, took home the title with a time of 49.56 seconds. The 4x400 relay came in third place with a time of four minutes 16.67 seconds. The 4x400 relay members are Nash, Ashley Brodehl (Fr., Mid-Distance, Upham, N.D.), DelRay Audet (Fr., Hurdles, Minot, N.D.) and Dailey. Women Field: Abbey Aide (Jr., Pole Vault, Bottineau, N.D.) broke the Minot State University school record and hit an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark in the pole vault at the Gustavus Adolphus College. She cleared a height of 12 feet and one-half inch on way to a first place finish. Northern State Men Track: Luke Hauert (Sr., Plankington, S.D./Stickney HS) broke the Northern State school record and extended his lead on the NSIC performance list in the 110-meter hurdles over the weekend. The senior clocked a time of 14.17 seconds to win the event at the Kip Janvrin Open on Friday evening. That effort was the second of three attempts at the 110-meter race on the weekend, which covered both the Drake Relays and the Kip Janvrin Open. Hauert finished eighth at the Drake Relays on Saturday afternoon after recording a 46-second split on the 400-meter leg of NSU’s sprint medley relay. His time of 14.17 seconds in the hurdles puts him 11th in the nation in that event. Men Field: Monte Meyerink (Fr., Spearfish, S.D./Spearfish HS) won the 1,500 meters to end his first career attempt at the decathlon at the NSIC Multis last weekend. The event win solidified Meyerink’s 7th place finish in the 10-discipline event. A freshman, Meyerink posted 5,572 points, just 46 points back of the sixth place finisher. Women Track: Jill Schaefer (Sr., Chester, S.D./Chester HS) ran legs of 100, 200 and 400 meters and posted another season-best time in the 400meter hurdles in a two-day, two-meet weekend that covered the Drake Relays and Kip Janvrin Open. Schaefer ran on the 4x100 and 4x200-meter relays and the 400-meter leg of the sprint medley relay at the Drake Relays. She also posted a time of 1:03.13 in the 400-meter hurdles at the Kip Javrin Open on Friday evening. That effort puts her third in the NSIC performance list, just .38 seconds off an NCAA provisional qualifying effort. Women Field: Leandra Schlecht (So., Watertown, S.D./Great Plains Lutheran HS) finished eighth in her second NSIC heptathlon last weekend, just missing the 4,000-point plateau with her grand total of 3,960 points. Schlecht posted fourth place finishes in three of the contested events (high jump, long jump, shot put) and was sixth after the conclusion of Day 1. The sophomore slipped to eighth after battling a stiff south wind in the 800 meters. Sioux Falls Sioux Falls track and field competed at the Drake Relays, Mt. Marty Twilight, Gustavus Alternative and NSIC Multi Event last weekend. Men Field: : Jordan Bents (So., Worthington, Minn.) began his weekend with a victory in the men’s shot put title with a heave of 52 feet, 7.25 inches (16.03m) at Mt. Marty Friday night. He met NCAA provisional standards (16.00m) with that toss. Bents proceeded to place second in the men’s hammer throw with a program record toss of 168 feet, two inches. He followed up his efforts with top five finishes in both the men’s shot and hammer throw events Saturday at the Gustavus Alternative meet. Men Track: Bobby Brockmueller (RSo., Brandon, S.D.), Kaleb Lindsey-Stevens (RJr., Buffalo, Minn.), Blake Stevenson (Jr., Aberdeen, S.D.) and Billy Brockmueller (RSo., Brandon, S.D.) crossed the finished line in 10:14.86 in the men’s college distance medley at the Drake Relays Saturday morning. Women Field: Jazzelena Black (Fr., Oxnard, Calif.) leaped a program record 19 feet, 6.75 inches (5.96m) Saturday at the Drake Relays. She bettered USF’s previous record by more than nine inches. Black also became the seventh Cougar to meet NCAA provisional standards for the outdoor season. Her mark is currently a conference-best and the ninth longest recorded in DII this year. Women Track: Kristin Townley won the 110m hurdles and finished runner-up in the 400m hurdles at the Gustavus Alternative. She had a winning time of 15.02 in the 110, while her 1:05.72 was good for second in the 400. NSIC Team Notes Continued St. Cloud State The St. Cloud State University track & field team completed in three different meets this weekend. The Huskies competed in the Drake Relays on Friday, Drake Alternative on Saturday, and had two athletes competing in the NSIC Multi. At the Drake Relays, SCSU competed in the women’s 4x100m and the 4x200m relays, while the men competed in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. The Huskies came up short as they did not qualify for finals on Saturday but the women’s 4x200m relay was a final and the Huskies finished in 10th place with a time of 1:44.46. Senior Keely Rubash was the standout athlete for SCSU at the Drake Alternative taking the title and setting a new meet record in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 11:14.95. Her time was also a personal best and a national qualifying provisional time. Rubash also recorded a second place finish in the 800m run posting a personal best time of 2:23.07. GaBrina Cornelious competed in the 100m (12.74) and 200m (26.75) dash with both being personal best times to earn a fourth place finish and a seventh place finish respectively. Nichelle Rubash recorded a time of 2:27.27 in the 800m run good for a sixth place. In the women’s hurdles it was senior Andrea Pfaff competing in the 100m hurdles for a personal best time of 16.95, good for fifth place and an eighth place finish in the 400m hurdles. Teammate Candice Wayne also competed in the 400m hurdles taking third with a personal best time of 1:06.26. In the women’s high jump Kellan Flynn finished in second place posting a personal best mark of 5-03.75. Men Track/Field: Hilary Luke earning a top-10 finish in the 400m dash posting a personal best time of 51.06, while teammate Tom Mountain took fourth in the 5,000m run also recording a personal best time of 15:46.55. Joe Mooney was one of the top finishers for the Huskies in the field events, as he took second in the high jump posting a mark of 6-06.00, good for fifth in the conference. Another top finisher was senior David Braaten as he recorded a third place finish with a mark of 15-03.50 in the pole vault. Dustin McColley took seventh (6-04.00) in the high jump, and Ryan Johnson earned a sixth (150-00) and seventh (46-08.75) place finish in discus and shot put respectively. Johnson’s discus mark was a personal best. Olson completed the multi placing sixth overall with 4,164 points and earning three team points for the Huskies to take into the conference meet. Olson set new personal bests in the 200m dash (6th, 27.11) and in the 800m run and the 800m run (4th, 2:34.16) at the multi. Myers recorded a fifth place finish overall in the multi earning 5,978 points and four team points for the Huskies. Myers also made some new personal bests in the 100m dash (7th, 11.57), 400m run (8th, 56.11), 110m hurdles (4th, 15.99), and in the javelin throw (5th, 130-04). Women Track: Keely Rubash (Sr., New Lisbon, Wis.) brought home the title and set a new meet record in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 11:14.95 at the Drake Alternative. Her time was also a personal best and a national qualifying provisional time. Rubash also recorded a second place finish in the 800m run posting a personal best time of 2:23.07. St. Cloud State will be back in action on Wednesday, May 1 as the men compete at the Golden Bear Twilight and the women compete at the Tommie Twilight. Wayne State Men Field: Matt Peter (Sr., Winside, Neb.) first place in the shot put with an NCAA provisional mark of 53’ 7 ½” at the UNL Pre-Drake Meet. The mark was a personal best and just missed the WSC school record by 5 inches. His throw is the 4th best in the NSIC this spring. Men Track: Zach Thomsen (Sophomore, Wayne, Neb.) won the Mount Marty College Twilight meet with a season best time of 1:54.95. His time is the 4th fastest in the NSIC this spring. Women Field: Carly Fehringer (Jr., Wayne, Neb.) placed 4th in the hammer throw at the Drake Relays with a throw of 202’ 10”. Her mark is the second best throw for her this season. She currently leads the NCAA with a best throw of 206’ 11”. Women Track: Lexi Guhl (Jr., Omaha, Neb.) placed second in the 100 meter hurdles at the Mount Marty College Twilight meet with a time of 15.81. The Wildcats will compete at the University of Nebraska Invitational on Saturday in Lincoln, NE. Winona State The Winona State track and field team recorded five NCAA Championship provisional marks at the St. Mary’s Open Saturday in Winona while adding another qualifying mark during an outstanding performance by the 4x400 meter relay squad at the Drake Relays. Women Track: The 4x400 team of Kelsey Bethke, Katie Bagley, Brittney Rynda and Catherine Whitcomb placed sixth in the college division at the prestigious Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa Saturday, posting a NCAA Division II Outdoor Championship provisional qualifying mark in the process. The relay recorded a time of 3:47.88 after qualifying for the event final on Friday. Women Field: Anna Blaske and Natalie Busher both posted top-five finishes for the Winona State track and field squad in the heptathlon at the NSIC Multi-Event Championship Monday in Aberdeen, SD. Blaske held steady in fourth place in the event, finishing with the second highest point total in Winona State history. She scored 4,266 points in the event, fewer than 200 points off the school record. Busher placed one spot behind in fifth with 4,170 points, the fourth-best total in school history. Busher had a strong final day of the event, moving up three spots from eighth. Both Warriors recorded points for Winona State that will count toward the team’s total at the NSIC Outdoor Championship held on May 10-11 in Sioux Falls, SD. Blaske’s fourth-place showing gave her five points while Busher added four to the WSU team total. Winona State will return to competition this weekend at the Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, Wis.
