SWBAT Students will be able to demonstrate Compassion in the classrooms by practicing positive and negative scenarios and making observations of others with 100% accuracy. Have the class go to their seats. They either draw/write to complete the assessment depending on grade level. How can you show compassion in the classroom? Create a class list of negative behaviors the students have observed in the classroom. Ask questions like: 1. What sort of problems do you see happen in the classroom? 2. What sort of behaviors stop you from being able to learn? Today we are going to be talking about what compassion looks like in the classroom. Discuss with your class that compassion can look like someone helping others who are in need of assistance. Pose the following negative scenario: (this can be done by the teacher acting out or copy onto chart paper for a shared reading) Student is orally sharing experience, answer, or question in the classroom (circle time or instructional time), another student interrupts the speaker and calls him dumb for not knowing the answer to his question. What could we have done differently here to be compassionate? Have students turn and talk to a buddy about what they could have done differently to be compassionate and help this other student. Model turn and talk. We listen by showing eyes and ears on speaker and repeating back what the partner said.

Let’s practice what being compassionate in the classroom looks like! Active Learning

Have a student orally share an experience they recently had (over break or over the weekend) in the classroom (during circle time or instructional time). Model compassion for the student by responding compassionately to the experience the student shared. For example, if a student shared about losing their homework over the weekend, you can respond by raising a quiet hand and saying, “I’m sorry you lost your homework” or “It’s ok, all of us make mistakes, as long as we try to fix them and not let them happen again.” For older students: If you disagree with the information politely share your opposing argument. Pose the question to the group, “What did you see this time that showed compassion?”

Reflect and Review Next Steps

Have students practice this with their turn and talk partner or the person they are sitting next to them or their classroom buddy. Give a glow to each student, “I like the way you.... (complete sentence using one of the CARE words)” Ex. Marissa, I like the way you were compassionate just now. You really listened to your friend and offered help when needed.” Tomorrow we will review compassion in the classroom and discuss what being accountable in the classroom looks and sounds like.

* For Older students, this scenario can be:

1.Students are talking and catching up on their weekends during locker time. Most people start walking to class but the ongoing conversation hasn’t ended. Be accountable! End the conversation quickly and catch up later. Walk to class and be on time! 2.Your book bag is very heavy with all the books you took for homework and you don’t want to carry it around with everything during the school day. Be accountable! Make a schedule and put it up on your locker door to remind you what classes you have in between locker breaks. This way you know what books, folders, binders and materials you’ll need for the next time block. Switch out the materials every locker break and always carry: paper, pencils, pens and erasers with you!

Have a student role play as teacher to give an appropriate direction, such as take out 2 pieces of paper and one pen. As a teacher, role play what a PYP/PBS student would do: take out 2 pieces of paper and one pen, then sit and wait quietly. Pose the question to the group, “What did you see this time that showed engaged?”
