SWBAT Demonstrate CARE using appropriate and socially acceptable behaviors when buying and eating lunch 100% of the time. Teacher observations and student reflection -Think about what you like and don’t like about the lunchroom. -What happens when you walk into the cafeteria and get in line to get your lunch? -How do you act at your lunch table? -What do you say everyday to the lunch staff? Example:  Entering the lunchroom loudly and budging in line  Complaining about the food choices  Carrying the tray with one hand  Talk while chewing  Leaving a mess at your area  Running to empty tray and missing the trash can when throwing things away We are going to learn how to make lunchtime a more positive experience for everyone. Situation 1. -Model: walking through the lunch line -Be respectful by entering the lunchroom in a quiet, single file line. -Be engaged by taking a box/tray, picking up all desired foods/drink, and putting them on the tray. -Stay in your place in line even if you’re not taking everything -Be respectful to the lunch staff giving out the meal by saying please and thank you.

Educate Situation 2. -Model: leaving the lunch line and going to table/upstairs -Be engaged by placing your finger on the scanner when it is your turn -Be engaged by carrying your tray with both hands -Be compassionate by helping a classmate carry a tray if he/she is having trouble

Examples -Thank you for being respectful to all the other classrooms that are learning by walking to the cafeteria quietly. -You are doing a great job being accountable and taking everything you need while you are in line. -You’re very engaged right now by carrying your tray with both hands to make sure you don’t spill or drop

-Be engaged by taking your tray to your table and finding an open seat/ sit where you are asked to sit 3. -Model: sitting at the table and eating -Be respectful by speaking to students at your table in a quiet voice and chewing with your mouth closed -Be compassionate by sharing your lunch with someone who may still be hungry -Be compassionate by understanding that some people like foods that you may not like to eat -Be respectful to the lunchroom staff by raising your hand if you need help/something and use manners like please and thank you -Be accountable for your actions at the lunch tables. Take responsibility for your area and its cleanliness. 4. -Model: throwing away trash and dismissing lunch room - Be engaged when directed by a staff member, stand up holding your tray with both hands and throwing your trash away in the trashcan. -Be accountable by making sure all your trash goes into the trashcan and not on the floor. -Be accountable when something does fall by accident, pick it up or clean it up. -Be respectful by lining up in a quiet line and waiting to be dismissed by a staff member or teacher -Do a guided practice for each of the situations having students walk through receiving feedback from teachers and peers. Reflect and Review

Have the students practice the 4 above scenarios. Give a “glow” to each student, “I like the way you… (complete sentence using one of the CARE words)” Ex. Kelly, Thank you for being accountable and taking your utensils, food, and milk when walking through the line.” Observe your students and other students from other classes in the lunchroom. Discuss what they were doing to show that they CARE. -Explain to students that they will be receiving PAWS by all staff and teachers for demonstrating CARE through everything they just learned.
