Japan need 13 more points to break through the 500 point barrier in the Pacific Nations Cup. Last year’s PNC winners have scored 487 points in their 26 matches so far. However another 24 conceded will make them the first side in the competition to concede 900 points. Samoa captain DAVID LEMI’s two try blitz against Fiji means the winger has now scored nine tries in the tournament, just two tries behind Hosea Gear’s Pacific Nations Cup tournament record. Gear scored eight of his tournament tries with Junior All Blacks and three with NewZealand Maori. Japan’s HITOSHI ONO and TAKASHI KIKUTANI will both make their 21st appearances in the IRB Pacific Nations Cup, thereby further extending their lead in the tournament appearances table over second-placed Sunia Koto of Fiji.

Samoa have played Japan 13 times in all competitions, winning 10 of those games. Japan have won two while there has been no draws. Six of those games have been in the Pacific Nations Cup, with Samoa winning all but one. The two sides last met in this competition last year, with Samoa running out convincing 34-15 winners. Japan’s only Pacific Nations Cup win against Samoa came in 2010 when they beat the Pacific island nation 31-23 in Apia. That game represents the only win Japan have had against Samoa in the last five clashes in all competitions, and the only time they’ve won on Samoan soil. Samoa need one more try to hit sixty against Japan in all competitions. They are also on the verge of breaking through the 200 point barrier against Japan in the Pacific Nations Cup, needing only six more points. They’ve scored 436 points in all competitions against Japan. These sides first met in 1990 for a Rugby World Cup 1991 qualifier. Played in Tokyo, the game finished with Samoa running out 37-11 winners.

Form guide Samoa’s 2012 form has followed on from last season’s impressive fare and they currently find themselves in the driving seat in this year’s PNC having beaten Tonga 20-18 and Fiji 29-26. 2011 will be best remembered for their 32-23 victory over Australia in Sydney last July. Japan finished off Rugby World Cup 2011 with a 23-23 draw against Canada in Napier and four wins on the trot in the Asian Five Nations looked to have set them up nicely to defend their Pacific Nations Cup title but defeats to Fiji (25-19) and Tonga (24-20) mean that they need a win against Samoa to avoid finishing bottom.

Pacific Nations Cup Facts & Figures

Samoa’s 29-26 defeat of Fiji last weekend saw them become the first side in the history of the Pacific Nations Cup to break the 600 point barrier. Japan’s AYUMU GOROMARU is the leading scorer in the Pacific Nations Cup so far with 29 points. Samoa flyhalf KI ANUFE has 24 points. Japan need three more successful penalty goals to hit 50 in the competition. Tonga are already on 50, thanks to a Kurt Morath penalty in the 24-20 win against Japan last weekend. Samoa, with 78 tries, need just three more tries to overtake the Junior All Blacks and become the highest try-scoring team in the history of the Pacific Nations Cup. A Samoa win will condemn Japan to their 20th defeat in the Pacific Nations Cup. Both Japan and Tonga have lost 19 games over the duration of the competition’s history.
