THE SERIES: Washington & Jefferson has won seven of the eight all-time meetings with Saint Vincent in a series that dates back to the modern era of football for the Bearcats, 2007. The two schools did not play in 2014 and 2015 due to the PAC’s unbalanced schedule following the additions of Carnegie Mellon and Case Western Reserve. The lone SVC win came in Latrobe in 2011, a 35-27 victory at Chuck Noll Field. Last season, in the resumption of the series, W&J posted a 48-26 win at Cameron Stadium.

THE COACHES: Mike Sirianni (Mount Union, ’94) owns a 135-30 (.818) record at W&J in his 15th season as head coach. The six-time PAC Coach of the Year and two-time South Region Coach of the Year (2004, 2012) is seventh among all active NCAA coaches in winning percentage (minimum of 10 years). The Presidents have made 12 postseason appearances under Sirianni, highlighted by NCAA quarterfinal finishes in 2004 and 2008. Dr. Ron Dolciato (John Carroll, ’90) is in his fourth season as the head coach at Saint Vincent. He has led the Bearcats to a record of 15-22 (.405) through three-plus seasons, including an 11-18 (.379) mark in PAC action. Prior to SVC, he served in a litany of roles at his alma mater, John Carroll.

THIS WEEK IN W&J FOOTBALL HISTORY 100 YEARS AGO - 1917

With the United States entering World War I in 1917, the initially tough schedule that had been put in place for 1917 had to be scrapped and replaced by one that eliminated long journeys. Notre Dame came to College Field for the eighth game of 1917. The star-studded Irish roster was led by Hall of Fame head coach Jesse Harper in his last season before assistant Knute Rockne took over the reigns the following year. Notre Dame All-American halfback George Gipp (he of ‘Win one for the Gipper’ fame) did not play, but the kicking game of the Notre Dame squad came through while the Presidents missed a pair of kicks to lose at home for the first time in 10 years.

25 YEARS AGO - 1992

En route to their first of two Stagg Bowl appearances in three years, the Presidents outscored their first seven opponents by a margin of 315-49. The eighth game of the year saw W&J handle Cortland State (N.Y.), 31-6.

10 YEARS AGO - 2007

No. 7 W&J won a nail-biter against No. 21 Waynesburg in Greene County, 2221, to remain undefeated and improve to 8-0. Bobby Swallow scored on a oneyard run with 7:29 to play to give W&J its first lead since Curt Jones put the Presidents up 7-0 at 5:10 of the first quarter. Waynesburg got 289 yards and two TDs on 30 carries from freshman Robert Heller who would go on to set the NCAA freshman record for yards with over 2,100 that season. David Ravida caught a TD pass from Swallow and Russ Chase recorded a safety. Kevin Mathews ran for 115 yards on 21 totes and Tom McCafferty had eight catches for 100 yards. Ryan Church caught five passes for 29 yards in the win. John Fahey led the team with nine tackles, while Jacob Bloomhuff and Russ Chase each had a sack and Ryan Mullen intercepted a pass.

TRICK OR TREAT: The Presidents hold an overall record of 53-10 (.841) in the month of October under Mike Sirianni. The month’s 53 wins are the most in any month for the head coach in his 15th season. BALL SECURITY: Since Mike Sirianni took over as head coach in 2003, W&J holds a 29-3 record when not committing a turnover, a winning percentage of .906. #ZOOMINZUBIK: Senior WR Jesse Zubik is number two in all NCAA divisions in career receiving yards and receiving touchdowns (behind Jake Wieneke of FCS South Dakota State in both). He currently sits at 243 receptions, 4,089 yards and 48 TDs in 39 career games. His touchdown total is a PAC record and 14th in Division III history. Against Bethany earlier this season, he became just the 22nd wide receiver in the level’s history to top 4,000 yards. He needs 173 yards to become the PAC’s all-time yardage leader and 27 receptions to move atop the W&J career catches list. MURGO THE MACHINE: Senior LB Nick Murgo ranks third among active Division III players and 12th among all divisions with 369 career total tackles. His 206 solo tackles are second in D-III and 10th across the four levels of NCAA football. Murgo has reached double digits in stops five times this season (23 overall), with each one in 2017 netting 11 tackles.

HISTORY LESSON: Washington & Jefferson has won 731 games in its 125-year history (731-389-40), third behind Mount Union (776) and Wittenberg (761) among NCAA Division III schools. Widener (697) and Wabash (678) round out the top five. Among all NCAA divisions, the Presidents’ win total places them tied for 22nd all-time, with Michigan ranking first at 937 wins. RANKINGS: W&J currently sits at No. 10 in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 poll and is No. 16 in the D3football.com Top 25 poll. The AFCA ranking is the first time W&J has entered the top 10 since 2009.

34 AND COUNTING: W&J now boasts 34 consecutive winning seasons as a football program. The Presidents’ 34 winning seasons rank fourth among all divisions of NCAA football behind Linfield (61), Florida State (40) and Mount Union (38). The last time W&J did not post a winning record was 1983 (3-5-1). **Graphic depicts entering season**

AWARDS: Freshman RB EJ Thompson scored a touchdown and the game-tying two-point conversion en route to game highs of 16 carries and 76 yards in W&J’s 34-33 overtime win over Westminster last week. For his performance, he earned PAC Rookie of the Week laurels for the third-straight week, making him the first student-athlete to win the award three times in football since it began prior to the 2016 season. RUN IT BACK: Senior CB O’Shea Anderson got W&J on the board in the second quarter against Westminster with a 72-yard interception return for a touchdown. It was his third pick of the season, seventh of his career, and first touchdown. With Murgo also having taken an interception back for a score this year, it marks the most for the Presidents since they went back three times in 2014. GIVE ME THAT: W&J’s 15 interceptions through seven games top the PAC by five and are tied for the ninth-most in Division III this season. The 15 picks have already surpassed last season’s total of 11 in 11 games. 15 INTs are the most in a regular season since 2013 when the Presidents snagged 16 passes. W&J picked off 21 passes in 2014, but eight of those were in the first round of the NCAA playoffs at Wittenberg. W&J has an interception in six games this season and multiple picks in five of seven games. The Presidents +1.14 turnover margin per game also tops the league. HANG ON: W&J won the time of possession battle on Saturday for a consecutive game, marking the first time that has happened since 2014 (Bethany and Case). W&J had 30-plus minutes of possession in three-straight games in 2015, but the Thomas More game that season was split exactly down the middle 30:00-30:00.

@wjathletics

W&J VS. THE PAC: W&J holds a 340-13910 (.706) winning percentage against current football-playing members of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. Washington & Jefferson has claimed a record 24 PAC Championships throughout the history of the league. Since Mike Sirianni took over as head coach in 2003, W&J is 77-15 (.837) in conference games.
