The first meeting was in Washington, where then-No. 9 SJFC scored the final 14 points of the game en route to a 28-24 victory over the unranked Presidents. W&J would go on to win the PAC title for the first of three consecutive seasons, while Fisher was shut out of the NCAA Tournament as both teams finished 8-3. The re-match in Rochester the following season saw Fisher once again close the game on a scoring run, this time the final 21 points as the then-No. 19 Cardinals closed out a 42-21 victory. W&J would go on to win the PAC title and reach the NCAA postseason for a consecutive season, and Fisher made its second NCAA quarterfinals appearance.

100 YEARS AGO - 1917

(DON’T) WAKE ME UP WHEN SEPTEMBER ENDS: The Presidents hold a 44-8 (.846) record in September since Mike Sirianni took over in 2003. In his 13 seasons, W&J has gone unbeaten in the month eight times, including 4-0 five times (‘04, ‘05, ‘07, ‘08 and ‘09) and 3-0 three times (‘03, ‘14 and ‘15).

PRESEASON RANKINGS: As has been the case in the previous two meetings between Washington & Jefferson and St. John Fisher, the Cardinals enter ranked in the D3football. com Top 25 poll, while the Presidents sit just outside of the list. Fisher is No. 23 and W&J is fifth among “Others receiving votes.” ELDER STATESMEN: Both teams will rely heavily on juniors and seniors on Saturday as 36 of the 44 starting spots between the two teams belong to members of those classes. Each team will rely on 18 upperclassmen, with the W&J defense starting 10 juniors and seniors, while the offense trots out eight. Both sides of the ball for SJFC boasts nine upperclassmen.

50 YEARS AGO - 1967

OPENING SUCCESS: Washington & Jefferson has had a great deal of success in season openers in program history. Entering 2017, W&J has a .728 winning percentage (90-33-2) to kick-off a season. The Presidents have won six-straight openers and nine of the last 10 years have begun with a victory. The only setback was a 27-0 defeat at Delaware Valley in 2010.

THIS WEEK IN W&J FOOTBALL HISTORY With the United States entering World War I in 1917, the initially tough schedule that had been put in place for 1917 had to be scrapped and replaced by one that eliminated long journeys. As a result, W&J, with Sol Metzger continuing as coach and Scrubby McCreight returning as captain, opened the season with what amounted to a disappointing victory, a 17-7 defeat of Kiski.

The four-year stretch between 19661969 was among the worst in program history with W&J going just 5-25 in that span. The Presidents kicked off the 1967 season with a 19-6 loss to John Carroll at College Field.

25 YEARS AGO - 1992

The Presidents trounced Hiram, 61-6, to open the season at home en route to an 11-2 overall record and the first of two Stagg Bowl appearances in a three-year stretch.

10 YEARS AGO - 2007

Hall of Famer Bobby Swallow threw four touchdowns, two of which went to Tom McCafferty, plus another (79-yarder) to Kevin Mathews and one to Luke Espe, as the Presidents built a second-quarter lead and never looked back in toppling Geneva, 28-20. Mathews ran 16 times for 114 yards and added two catches for 81. Todd Keenan picked off a pair of passes to go with eight tackles and David Gitlitz added a game-high 15 stops, including eight solo.

HOME COOKIN’: Since the first year of football at W&J in 1890, the Presidents have a staggering .835 winning percentage in seasonopeners at home. In the 88 times W&J has opened a year at Cameron Stadium (formerly College Field), the Presidents are 73-14-1. WELCOME TO MY HOUSE: W&J has won 24-straight games at the friendly confines of Cameron Stadium, dating back to a 28-24 setback against St. John Fisher in the 2012 home opener on Sept. 8. That’s:

1,820 days or 4 years, 11 months & 25 days

BALL SECURITY: Since Mike Sirianni took over as head coach in 2003, W&J holds a 27-3 record when not committing a turnover, a winning percentage of .900. PICK UP WHERE YOU LEFT OFF: The last time the Presidents took the field was against an Empire 8 team, Brockport (N.Y.), in the ECAC Presidents Bowl at historic Franklin Field in Philadelphia. If they continue how last season ended, with W&J scoring 25-straight points to end the game en route to a 38-31 victory, Saturday should be an exciting day at Cameron Stadium. HISTORY LESSON: Washington & Jefferson has won 724 games in its 125-year history (724-38-40), third behind Mount Union (769) and Wittenberg (754) among NCAA Division III schools. Widener (692) and Wabash (672) round out the top five. Among all NCAA divisions, the Presidents’ win total places them 23rd, with Michigan ranking first with 935 wins.

@wjathletics

#ZOOMINZUBIK: Senior WR Jesse Zubik has put together quite the collection of hardware in the form of awards since last season concluded. After being a unanimous Second Team All-American last year, he has received Preseason First Team All-America honors from a litany of outlets, including D3football.com, Lindy’s Sports, Street & Smith’s, HERO Sports and College Football America. He enters his senior season already holding the W&J career receiving yards record (3,348) and is second in career receptions (207, record is 269) and receiving touchdowns (37, record is 39). START OF SOMETHING NEW: Nine Presidents are set to make their first career starts on Saturday, five on defense (SR/DE John Loper; SO/NT Jeffrey Oxner; SR/LB Freddie McKissick; SR/LB Brendan Reddy; JR/CB Zack Queen) and four on offense SR/ QB Alex Rowse; SO/LG Austin Curnes; SO/RT Keaton Turney; SO/RB Jordan West or FR/RB EJ Thompson). W&J VS. THE EMPIRE 8: W&J holds an 11-8 (.579) overall record against current footballplaying members of the Empire 8 conference. The President have played five of the eight teams in the league and open up with St. John Fisher each of the next two seasons. W&J head coach Mike Sirianni is 1-3 alltime against current Empire 8 teams (2003 Buffalo State, L 10-7; 2012 - St. John Fisher, L 28-24; 2013 - St. John Fisher, L 42-21; 2016 - Brockport, W 38-31).
