THE COACHES: Mike Sirianni (Mount Union, ’94) owns a 132-30 (.815) record at W&J in his 15th season as head coach. The six-time PAC Coach of the Year and two-time South Region Coach of the Year (2004, 2012) is seventh among all active NCAA coaches in winning percentage (minimum of 10 years). The Presidents have made 12 postseason appearances under Sirianni, highlighted by NCAA quarterfinal finishes in 2004 and 2008. Rich Lackner (Carnegie Mellon, ’79) is in his 32nd year leading the Tartans and holds a 208-110-2 (.653) career record at his alma mater. Lackner’s 208 wins are third among active Division III head coaches and he is one of just seven D-III leaders to reach the 200-win mark. A Western Pennsylvania Hall of Famer, Lackner has guided the Tartans to 10 conference championships and two NCAA playoff berths.

THIS WEEK IN W&J FOOTBALL HISTORY 100 YEARS AGO - 1917

With the United States entering World War I in 1917, the initially tough schedule that had been put in place for 1917 had to be scrapped and replaced by one that eliminated long journeys. After earning a 7-0 win over Penn State a week earlier, W&J made quick work of Geneva in a 36-0 rout in which All-American Scrubby McCreight sat out.

50 YEARS AGO - 1967

The four-year stretch between 19661969 was among the worst in program history with W&J going just 5-25 in that span. With just three games left in the campaign, the Presidents stumbled with a 28-0 loss at Allegheny.

25 YEARS AGO - 1992

En route to their first of two Stagg Bowl appearances in three years, the Presidents outscored their first four opponents by a margin of 193-20. The fifth game brought much of the same as W&J hit the road to hand Thiel a 38-0 defeat in Greenville.

10 YEARS AGO - 2007

After trailing, 6-0, through the first quarter, W&J scored 28 of the final 34 points in the game to defeat Thiel, 28-12, at Cameron Stadium. Bobby Swallow threw for three scores and 230 yards as he hit Craig Besong from 10 yards and Tom McCafferty for scores of 57 and 22 yards. Kevin Mathews capped the scoring with a one-yard run in the fourth quarter. McCafferty finished with five grabs for 109 yards and Ryan Church hauled in a pair of passes for 11 yards. Jeff Ernst and Chad Boskat had sacks defensively and David Gitlitz recorded 14 tackles.

TRICK OR TREAT: The Presidents hold an overall record of 50-10 (.833) in the month of October under Mike Sirianni. The month’s 50 wins are the most in any month for the head coach in his 15th season. BALL SECURITY: Since Mike Sirianni took over as head coach in 2003, W&J holds a 29-3 record when not committing a turnover, a winning percentage of .906. I WISH THAT I HAD JESSE’S STATS: Last year against Carnegie Mellon, senior WR Jesse Zubik set a new W&J single-game record with 17 catches and topped the 200-yard mark for the first time (two others since). He also pulled in four TD grabs, which matched the previous W&J and PAC record. #ZOOMINZUBIK: Zubik is number two in all NCAA divisions in career receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. He currently sits at 233 receptions, 3,951 yards and 47 TDs in 36 career games. His touchdown total is a PAC record and tied for 14th in Division III history, while with 49 more yards he will become just the 22nd wide receiver in the level’s history to top 4,000 yards. He needs 311 yards to become the PAC’s all-time yardage leader.

HISTORY LESSON: Washington & Jefferson has won 728 games in its 125-year history (728-389-40), third behind Mount Union (773) and Wittenberg (758) among NCAA Division III schools. Widener (695) and Wabash (676) round out the top five. Among all NCAA divisions, the Presidents’ win total places them 23rd all-time, with Michigan ranking first with 937 wins. RANKINGS: W&J currently sits at No. 13 in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 poll and is No. 16 in the D3football.com Top 25 poll. Carnegie Mellon is 2-11 all-time against teams in the D3football.com Top 25. 33 AND COUNTING: W&J boasts 33 consecutive winning seasons as a football program. The Presidents 33 winning seasons rank fourth among all divisions of NCAA football behind Linfield (61), Florida State (40) and Mount Union (38). The last time W&J did not post a winning record was 1983 (3-5-1).

SETTLING IN: Senior QB Alex Rowse ranks third in Division III with a .708 completion percentage and is in the Top 25 of a litany of other statistics. He is also a big reason why the Presidents boast the number four passing attack (382.5 yards per game) in the nation. MURGO THE MACHINE: Senior LB Nick Murgo ranks third among active Division III players with 336 career total tackles. In his only other career game against Carnegie Mellon, Murgo recorded 15 stops a season ago. SPECIAL DAY: Senior LB Dalton Day tied for the team lead against Thiel with seven tackles, including a sack. Four of his stops came on special teams, representing the most special teams tackles for a President in a game since classmate Luke Merhaut had four stops at Thiel on Nov. 8, 2014. The four stops also vaulted Day into a three-way tie atop the W&J special teams tackles list along with senior RB Brennan Geiger and junior DB Cody Milsom. UNSTOPPABLE FORCE MEETS THE IMMOVABLE OBJECT: W&J leads the PAC in scoring offense, averaging 44.0 points per game, while Carnegie Mellon tops the league in scoring defense, surrendering only 14.4 points per game. The numbers are similar reversed as the Tartans are third in the league at 36.4 ppg offensively, while the Presidents yield just 16.5 ppg. GIVE ME THAT: W&J tops the PAC in interceptions with eight through four games, the Presidents are tied in turnover margin at plus-four. Also plus-four in turnovers? CMU. KEEP HIM CLEAN: The W&J offensive line has been stellar this season, tied for first in the PAC with just three sacks allowed. What’s more impressive than that is W&J has attempted 155 passes (and dropped back several more times), while the team tied for first, Geneva, has thrown only 22 passes.

@wjathletics

W&J VS. THE PAC: W&J holds a 337-13910 (.704) winning percentage against current football-playing members of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. Washington & Jefferson has claimed 24 PAC Championships throughout the history of the league. Since Mike Sirianni took over as head coach in 2003, W&J is 74-15 (.831) in conference games.
