Prince Albert Raiders Game Notes RAIDER REVIEW: The Raiders could not capitalize on their chances in Saskatoon last night, falling 3-1 to the Blades despite outshooting their rivals 42-22. The Blades opened the scoring in the first period and held the margin until 7 minutes remaining in the game when they extended their lead to two. With the goaltender pulled for the extra attacker, 19-year-old centre Jayden Hart scored to get the Raiders within one, but the Blades foiled the comeback by scoring on the empty net late in the game. 20-year-old goaltender Cole Cheveldave stopped 19 of 231 shots faced in a losing cause. VS THE PATS The Raiders are 5-0-0-0 when facing Regina this season, including a 4-0 victory in their last meeting with the Pats on December 30th in Regina. 18-year-old defenceman Josh Morrissey leads the Raiders on the scoresheet with 4 goals and 6 assists for 10 points against the Pats. 17-year-old forwards Tim Vanstone and Darcy Zaharichuk have the highest plus/minus on the team, each with a plus4 rating. 20-year-old goaltender Cole Cheveldave has a 1.34 goals against average and .953 save percentage in 4 games against Regina. RAIDERS RANKED: 18-year-old centre Leon Draisaitl has been ranked 2nd among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting Service’s recent Midterm rankings for the 2014 NHL Draft, making him the highest ranked player in the WHL. 17-year-old forward Reid Gardiner holds down the 40th spot on the list released on Monday, the 11th highest player in the WHL. KEEPING IT CLEAN: The Raiders are the second least penalized team in the WHL and have the lowest amount of penalty minutes in the Eastern Conference, with just 517 through 43 games this season. The Raiders have also been given the least amount of powerplays this year, earning 165 man advantages. Despite the lack of opportunities, the Green and Gold are third in powerplay percentage, converting on 23.6% of their chances. TOP PROSPECTS GAME: 18-year-old centre Leon Draisaitl played in the BMO NHL/CHL Top Prospects game at the Saddledome in Calgary on Wednesday for the victorious Team Orr. HEATING UP: 19-year-old winger Carson Perreaux has scored 5 goals in his last 7 games. 19-year-old centre Calder Brooks has points in 5 of his first 8 games as a Raider. IT GOES TO ELEVEN: 18-year-old centre Leon Draisaitl is on a 11-game point streak, with 9 goals and 15 assists for 24 points. It is the longest active consecutive point run in the WHL, as well as the longest assist streak in the league this season. MILESTONES: 19-year-old defenceman Sawyer Lange is one assist from 50 in his career and 4 games from 175, while 18-year-old defenceman Josh Morrissey is one game from the same mark and 19-year-old forward Chance Braid is 2 games away. The Raiders captain is also one goal shy of his previous season high of 15. 19-year-old winger Dakota Conroy is one goal from 50 in his career. 17-year-old forward Reid Gardiner will reach the 100 game plateau in 4 games. Last night was the 100 th game of 18-year-old centre Leon Draisaitl’s career.
UPCOMING GAMES: The Raiders finish off their 3 games in 3 nights weekend by hosting the Swift Current Broncos tomorrow night. They face the Red Deer Rebels in a rematch of last season’s first round playoff series on Wednesday before travelling to Swift Current on Friday the 24th.
Regina Pats Game Note Head-to-Head The Regina Pats (23-18-3-2) and Prince Albert Raiders (22-20-2-0) meet up for the sixth time this season. The Pats have struggled against Prince Albert with a 0-4-1-0 record on the year. Coming into the game, Chandler Stephenson and Boston Leier lead the Pats with four points each. Leier has the most goals for Regina with three in the five games to date. Josh Morrissey is the Raider with ten points (4G, 6A) in four of the games. Both teams come into tonight’s game after losses Friday night. The Blue and White saw their three game winning streak come to a close with a loss to Kootenay last night. Prince Albert has lost two in a row after a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Saskatoon Blades. This evening’s game can be heard on 620 CKRM starting at 6:35 p.m. Lead Up: Pats Cooled by Ice in 6-1 Loss The Pats saw their three game winning streak come to an end with the Kootenay Ice opening up the score as the game wore on. Regina came out of the first period down 1-0 to the visitors, but goals just over a minute apart gave Kootenay a 3-0 lead before Dryden Hunt cut it to 3-1 before the end of the second. The third saw the Ice strike three more times, twice on the powerplay to roll to the 6-1 victory. In Need of a ‘W’ The Pats haven’t matched up well against the Raiders this season still looking for their first win against the Green and Gold. In four of their five games against Prince Albert, the Pats have only scored one goal or less. The Raiders have done an effective job shutting down Pats scorers with Chandler Stephenson and Morgan Klimchuk having yet to score a goal against Prince Albert this season. Scoring in Bunches Dryden Hunt has three goals in his last two games. It marks the fourth time this season Hunt has scored in two or more straight games with eleven of his thirteen goals on the year coming over those stretches. In the Twenties The Pats are one of only four teams with three or more players over the twenty goal mark so far this season. Boston Leier with 26, Dyson Stevenson with 21 and Chandler Stephenson with 20 are the Pats’ top three goal scorers. The other teams with three or more 20 goal scorers are Portland (5), Edmonton (3) and Seattle (3). Streaks 2 – Dryden Hunt has goals in back-to-back games with three goals (3G) Milestones Games Played 100 – Adam Brooks has played 94 games in his WHL career Statistical 150 – Morgan Klimchuk registered the 150th point of his WHL career January 11th at Saskatoon 150 – Boston Leier has 148 points in his WHL career 100 – Chandler Stephenson has 98 assists in his WHL career 53 – Boston Leier reached a new single season career high in points with his 53 rd of the season January 11th at Saskatoon Age Make-Up 16 Year Olds (97) – 3 (Zimmer, Reagan, Wagner) 17 Year Olds (96) – 4 (Brooks, Mumby, Harrison, Kammerer) 18 Year Olds (95) – 8 (Klimchuk, Hand, Williams, Burroughs, Hunt, Gay, Hansen, Schacher, Wapple) 19 Year Olds (94) – 5 (Sinitsyn, Stephenson, Christoffer, MacAuley, D’Amico, McVeigh) 20 Year Olds (93) – 3 (Stevenson, Leier, Zgraggen)
