PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE M AY 2 0 1 3 B Y M E L A N I E L A M B E RT By now all of the chapters and members will have wound down from a very successful Admin Professional Week and their events. Well done everyone – you should all be very proud. Each of the division board members have wri en a report on their experience at your event and you’ll find them all included in this newsle er. I highly recommend that members a end an APW event, your home chapter’s or even another chapter’s. You’ll never regret the professional development or the me spent with other like minded admins. On May 1st, I was pleased and privileged to a end the chartering of the division’s new chapter – Meyers’ Creek – in Belleville, Ontario. What an enthusias c group and to be able to charter with 24 members! Outstanding work by Jacqui, Pat, Sharron and all the members. Lina Veglia, District Director, Canada, was there as well and between us we were able to ini ate the new members, welcome the transferring members and install the interim board. I think we will see great things from this group and I recommend that if you are ever in the Belleville area, a end one of their mee ngs, as they will con nue to meet during the summer. As part of my chapter visit tour, I spent some me with Barrie Chapter members this month, and will be visi ng O awa West (May 15) and the new Meyers’ Creek (May 29) chapters. So watch for those posts on the egroup. The division board is pu ng the final touches on the AGM that will take place at CDC in Lethbridge, Alberta. I have seen the registra on list and I’m happy to say that a delegate from almost all of our chapters will be in a endance and quite a few members. Your support of IAAP, this division and your chapter is appreciated. See y’all in Lethbridge!

Ulla de S cker has prepared a document called “100 Traps and Trip‐Ups: Gallery of Language Pi alls”. Ulla has kindly approved our including some in Professionally Speaking. In the gallery, Ulla offers simple ps and solu ons for common errors. Ques ons and sugges ons are welcome:
[email protected]. Here are more of Ulla’s ps and solu ons: 26. Disinterested vs. uninterested: Are you impar al, or doesn't the subject grab you? WRONG: I am disinterested in a ending the company picnic. CORRECT: I am uninterested in (have no desire for) a ending the picnic. CORRECT: We need a disinterested (impar al, neutral) person to comment on the conflict. PS: Same goes for disinclined vs. uninclined! 27. Lielay, Laylie: Let's not sound like country song lyrics! WRONG: Wouldn't we all love to lay on the beach! Oh, to be laying in the lap of luxury! CORRECT: … lie on the beach. … lying in the lap of luxury. "Lay" is a transi ve verb, meaning "put an object somewhere": May I lay the parcel here on the counter? "Lie" is intransi ve, meaning "stay in one place": Is it OK for the parcel to lie here un l someone comes to get it? When the country singer sings "I'm laying here alone" … we must wonder what he or she is laying … train tracks? But of course, it gets confusing when we go to past tense. WRONG: I laid on the beach all a ernoon yesterday. CORRECT: I lay on the beach all a ernoon yesterday. Here's the drill: LAY ‐ LAYING ‐ LAID ‐ LAID ‐ LAYING: Someone is pu ng something somewhere. I now lay a parcel on the counter. I'm laying it down right this second. Yesterday, I laid a parcel on the counter. I have laid a parcel on this counter many mes. I'll be laying wreaths at this monument for as long as I'm able. I have been laying memorial wreaths at the monument for many years. LIE ‐ LYING ‐ LAY ‐ LAIN ‐ LYING: Someone or something is staying in one place. The ma er lies dormant for the moment. The ma er is lying dormant for now. The ma er lay dormant for 3 months before the new board could deal with it. The ma er has lain dormant for months, but now it is on the agenda. The ma er will be (has been) lying dormant for some me. SOLUTION IF YOU'RE NOT SURE: Use another verb. How long has this parcel been si ng here? I stayed on the beach for hours. She will be using the couch while her guests have the bedroom. PS: The common expression "lay of the land" should be "lie of the land" (how the land lies). You may just want to omit the phrase from your vocabulary since the error is pervasive ‐ you'll be using the correct phrase and others may think you aren't!
28. Locate or find? Depends ‐ are we talking place or discovery? WRONG: Users say they can't locate the informa on they need on the intranet. CORRECT: Users say they can't find the informa on they need. "Locate" means "place, situate": The architects want to locate a secondary entrance on the building's south side. The restrooms are located at the end of the hallway. 29. "of a": Avoid the combina on! (Take my word: Just avoid it!) WRONG: I am not that good of a dancer. It was that cri cal of a situa on … CORRECT: I am not that good a dancer. The situa on was so cri cal … It was such a cri cal situa on … 30. Issue‐ifica on … don't we have enough issues already? GRATING: How many issues are on the agenda? APPROPRIATE: How many items are on the agenda? "Issue" means difficulty, conflict, problem, sore point, etc. "Please vote on the coffee issue" is over the top when the ma er at hand is a request for input on preferences for the lunch room! SOLUTION IF YOU'RE NOT SURE: Will "ma er" or "subject" or "topic" do the job? If so, avoid the "issue"!

Administra ve Professionals Week IAAP Events On April 17th the Scarborough Chapter held their Admin Professional Week event. They decided to do something a li le different and out of the ordinary as their celebra on; something special, fun and just for ourselves. We went to a live taping of The Steven and Chris show in downtown Toronto. About 12 of us met in a central loca on in Scarborough and rode in a limo truck. We laughed, we ate lunch, we learned about each other, and we each got a goodie bag with a specially made Be The One cookie.
On Wednesday April 24, I had the opportunity to a end the Quintus Chapter APD event. Their dinner and speaker was well a ended with a room full of people. Bonnie McKay addressed the group and pointed out the benefits of being part of this associa on. I got to bring gree ngs from the division board.
The event wasn’t a typical APW event, but I think it was just what the chapter and members needed. Some mes you just have to do something fun and frivolous for APD and just for yourself.
Over the course of the evening the chapter gave out many, many door prizes. They must have been collec ng for months. The evening was a huge success for the chapter and I look forward to seeing many new members join as a result of their efforts.
I was a li le behind in arriving at the event and so sadly missed the vendors sec on of the evening. I’m told there were quite a few and lots of interest. The chapter also had an IAAP display, with This was my first experience at a live taping and it informa on on the chapter and the associa on for was great! Administra ve Professionals Week IAAP Events On April 24th, the O awa Chapter of IAAP held a morning Administra ve Professionals Week Event at the Chimo Hotel in O awa with 36 people in a endance. It was my pleasure to read the message from Lina Veglia as well as the Central Canada Division message. Both messages were well received. The organizing commi ee of Kim Picard and Sylvie Paul‐Hus, CAP‐OM put together an excellent program and managed to obtain delegate bags and door prizes for all a endees. The morning started off with guest speaker Tyson Roffey, CIPP/IT, Chief Informa on and Privacy Officer for CHEO. Tyson spoke about how an admin can help their company with the security of their informa on. Tyson’s presenta on covered document disposal, PIPEDA (Personal Informa on Protec on and Electronics Document Act), the Freedom of Informa on Act, PHIPA (Personal Health Informa on Protec on Act) and so much more. Wadih Elie Tannous, CEO of Digital Locksmiths from Montreal brought along Terry Cutler his Chief Technology Officer and a Cer fied Ethical Hacker. Their presenta on covered privacy and data protec on at all levels in a company. They also explained some of the ways that hackers can access data and some of the “tricks” that are used and how to avoid them. This was a real eye opening presenta on. And last but not least, Desiree Zalatan of CompuEase’s presenta on covered how to secure your documents using Microso . This was an excellent topic and an excellent presenta on. A lot of very useful informa on was covered in one half day but a endees were pleased with the topics and the speakers. Respec ully submi ed by Adèle Conn, CAP Central Canada Division Vice‐President
It was an absolutely beau ful day for the North Bay Chapter’s Administra ve Professionals Day event held at the Best Western Hotel on Lakeshore Drive in North Bay. Over 60 par cipants at the morning session were completely cap vated by the dynamic presenta on delivered by Rhonda Scharf on Dealing with Difficult People. My own personal “aha” moment came with Rhonda pointed out that when I am dealing with my “difficult” person, that person is also dealing with their own “difficult” person, and that would be ME! It is amazing how we all feel that we have difficult people in our life but we never see ourselves as some else’s difficult person. A vendor fair was set‐up in the main foyer and par cipants were very pleased to visit each booth gathering informa on, samples and entering prize give‐a‐ways. The luncheon was a ended by over 110 par cipants and was hosted by a local radio announcer and long‐ me supporter. The a endees enjoyed a wonderful buffet and then enjoyed Rhonda Scharf as the Keynote Speaker on the topic “Can’t get no sa sfac on”; needless to say it was a humour‐filled hour. The a ernoon session was a Time Management workshop delivered by Hélène Demore and was also very well a ended. The North Bay Chapter has this event down to a science! It is extremely well organized and as a direct result, has developed loyal a endees who enjoy each event and look forward to the following year’s event. Administra ve Professionals Week IAAP Events I had the privilege of a ending Grand River Chapter’s full day APW event on Wednesday, April 24th. Wow! It is a fine produc on! A great turnout from the community and surrounding areas. It is evident that the companies support their admins by the number of non‐members a ending this event. The morning started with gree ngs from dignitaries including Canada District Director Lina Veglia and Mayor Doug Craig, City of Cambridge. Bob Crow who is a friend of IAAP spoke of his apprecia on to Admins everywhere. This gentleman spoke passionately of his respect and admira on for admins especially his mother! He obviously paid a en on! Karen Lee Stocker was the keynote speaker who spoke about “You can be the one to be the change”. This was a full day seminar. I have provided below an overview of both sessions. Session ONE: “Understanding Yourself and Others” Become aware of inner thoughts Understand your ability to produce the results you want Build strong connec ons and sa sfying rela onships Create personal and professional balance
Session TWO: “Communica on / Change” Discover the ways to break through the resistance to change Discover how to communicate to create posi ve outcomes Be able to communicate in an asser ve, yet posi ve way and bring out the best in themselves and others by using effec ve ques ons. There were many “aha” moments throughout the day from audience members. Karen is a good speaker and keeps you on your toes! An awesome lunch was provided followed by a stretch fit session by Andrea Johnston. Silent auc on items, door prizes and vendors made the day go quickly and my wallet might have been a li le lighter on the way home! I must give kudos to the APW commi ee for a job well done! If you have an opportunity to a end this event, please do, you won’t be disappointed! Respec ully submi ed by Bonnie McKay, CAP‐OM Central Canada Division President‐Elect
President Melanie Lambert, Treasurer Teresa Doucet and I a ended the BurlOak Bay Chapter on Thursday, April 25th. You may ask how 3 of us were able to a end from the Division. Logis cs and ming are the answer to that! Melanie had a ended the Quintus Chapter APW event the evening before and stayed at my house and Teresa lives in Cambridge. It is expected that the Division liaisons will a end as many APW events as possible but unfortunately when most chapters hold their events on April 24, it is a li le tricky. BurlOak Bay held their event at the Holiday Inn on South Service Road, Burlington. There were members from Quintus, Grand River, O awa and Peel Halton in a endance along with lots of guests in addi on to BurlOak members. The vendors suppor ng this event were very engaging and
answered our ques ons and gave demonstra ons of their products. President Pa Emslie, CAP‐OM welcomed everyone and we enjoyed a delicious dinner prior to being entertained by the one and only Rosita Hall. Rosita had us laughing and crying all at the same me. A magnificent speaker with a wealth of informa on that she shares in her presenta ons, Rosita is a great supporter of IAAP and she is loved throughout the province. Thanks to the BurlOak Bay Chapter for a wonderful evening and my beau ful door prize that sits proudly on my coffee table!
