Rosslyn is an intersection. It is the point at which D.C. meets Arlington, the parkway passes through, and I-66 and Route 29 run parallel to one another. A metro stop services both sides of the Potomac river at this point. One of the early farmsteads to Proposed Pedestrian Paths be taken over by the urban growth of our nation’s Capitol and across the Potomac GeorgetownN from Georgetown, whose connection to the rest of DC is institutionally fractured. Union Station Rosslyn’s identity has grown in response to DC’s limited supply of land and building Circulator Bus height restrictions. While Rosslyn’s connections to DC run deep, physical access between the two is difficult. The Key Bridge, consistently overwhelmed by traffic, is a tenuous connection to Georgetown and despite metro and bus access, Rosslyn Gondola Station/Park Municipal Building is a distinctly auto-oriented city. The under-utilized waterfront and unmaintained park land harbor two forms of activity, exercise and bike commuting between the Mount Vernon and Custis trails and homeless camps between the George Designated Bicycle Routes Washington Parkway and I-66. PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Engaging existing transportation routes and imagining two new connections from Georgetown—the proposed Gondola and a bicycle bridge— allows for the creation of public park space. The under-utilized waterfront and unmaintained park land harbor two forms of activity, exercise and bike commuting between the Mount Vernon and Custis trails and homeless camps between the George Washington Parkway and I-66. A modified round about and a land bridge will enhance transportation and provide services for commuters, tourists, and homeless alike.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Each form of transportation passing through the Rosslyn waterfront is given its own space. Gondola line, bicycle routes, and pedestrian paths travel adjacent to one another and intersect at charged moments on the landscape. The roundabout where Key Bridge meets Rosslyn is domesticated by Japanese Maples and White Pines, welcoming pedestrians and cyclist while the traffic patterns slow down cars. The pier over the Potomac River combines materials reflecting the gathering of people and the accumulation of sediment along the river bank.
