President's Message Robert Cooney

Hello Northwest PA SPE Members! I hope that everyone had a memorable holiday season and was able to enjoy time away from work with their families. Like every year, I am sure that a number of us are busy setting personal and business goals for the coming year. While the beginning of the year can be quite hectic and without much outdoor time to enjoy the weather, do all you can to enjoy each day and continue the holiday spirit throughout the coming year. Below are the upcoming meeting topics. In April, I am in the process of organizing more of a networking session for our local plastics industry that I feel will cover a number of broad topics related to the economy and best practices. I think the educational topics for our meetings are beneficial, but usually only appeal to a select number of members. I am optimistic that the roundtable will draw a large audience of both members and non-members. There will be a panel discussion led by a number of local experts and followed by breakout sessions on specific topics.

NW PA SPE MEMBER OF THE YEAR BRAD JOHNSON This year’s Member of the Year grew up in Russel, PA where he attended and wrestled at Eisenhower High School, winning several athletic awards. Bradley G. Johnson went on to earn a B.S. in 1983 and an M.E. in 1984 in Chemical Engineering from Virginia Tech. After college, he went to work at Torpedo Wire and Strip in Pittsfield, PA as a Plating Engineer, then moved on to GTE Products Corporation (later Osram Sylvania) in Warren, PA. While at Osram, Brad also attended Gannon University and received his Masters in Business Administration in 1993. Brad spent more than a decade at Osram in several different roles, but primarily as a project engineer in manufacturing and then design/development, and resident troubleshooter. It was this blend that appealed to Penn State Erie, the Behrend College enough that they hired him in 1994 as a faculty member in the Plastics Engineering Technology program. At Behrend, Brad has developed and taught several different classes in Plastics Processing and Advanced Processing, Statistical Process Control and Controls and Automation. He was instrumental in setting up the new Plastics Processing Lab in the Jack Burke Research and Economic Development Center. While teaching, Brad saw an opportunity to expand the education of plastics to more than just the college. He began offering Continuing Education classes in plastics processing and troubleshooting, then expanded that program. He went on to create what is now the Plastics Training Academy, which offers multiple plastics education classes on a year round basis. Also while at Behrend, Brad organized an SPE Injection Molding Conference that was so successful it is being planned again, for the third time, next year. His professional memberships include the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE), and, since 1996, NWPA SPE. He was the Technical Program Chair for the Injection Molding Division, and serves on their Board. From SPE, Brad received the Injection Molding Division Chair Award and the Technical Program Chair Award (twice) and in 2010 he was awarded

SPE’s coveted Engineer of the Year. He has presented several Antec papers and serves as faculty advisor for student papers every year. He frequently speaks at SPE functions and has presented for our local chapter. Currently, Brad enjoys hunting, golf, wrestling and college football, and is a Cleveland Browns fan. He and his lovely wife Anita (Curtis) Johnson celebrated 25 years of marriage this year. They have five children ages 19, 17, 15, 13 and seven. The 19 year old is a student in the Plastics Program at Behrend. Through his teaching at Penn State Behrend, his lifelong continuing education instruction and his work with SPE, Brad epitomizes the SPE mission “To promote and provide the knowledge and education of plastics and polymers worldwide”. It is for these reasons that Brad Johnson has earned the Northwestern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Society of Plastics Engineer’s nomination as our Member of the Year.

NORTHWEST PENNSYLVANIA CHAPTER SOCIETY OF PLASTICS ENGINEERS Board of Directors Meeting Minutes The NWPA SPE Board of Directors Meeting was held on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at ECTS. The meeting was called to order at 5.34 p.m. with seven members present: Shelly Czulewicz, Mark DeHaven, Lucy Lenhardt, Denny Sanders, Rob Cooney, Trevor Thorwart and Student Rep Ryan. Secretary’s Report – Previous minutes submitted for review and subsequent approval. Rob motioned to accept, motion seconded by Mark. Approved without changes. Lucy had student meeting money to turn in to Denny. The 2010 scholarship applications are out and due by the end of this week. They will be reviewed by the Penn State faculty and a recommendation will be made in the coming couple weeks. Treasurer’s Report – Dennis reported that the taxes were mailed in and a copy sent to National. We started the last year with $3186.86 in the checking account, saw net income of $20312.29 and total expenses of $22493.08 for a balance of just over a thousand dollars starting this fiscal year. We received a rebate check of $162.00. Newsletter Report – Still much discussion over going to an electronic copy. Advertisers will need to be contacted to see if they have as much or more or less interest in e-ads. We should start announcing the prospect in this year’s newsletter and taking names if there are members without email or internet that would still require a hard copy. The question is still who would design the newsletter if it is not printed. Rob will get a quote from Cathy. The November newsletter needs an ad for the Christmas book. There is no company profile this month, instead we will look to run a technical article. EESC – There is a dinner meeting coming up; Rob will watch for more information as it is available. Council Report – no new activity. October newsletter had the last Council minutes. Publicity Report – pictures were sent in to the newsletter. Membership Report – There are four new members this month. Lynzie will review the attendees list from the last meeting and sort members from non-members just to give us an idea who is attending. Special Events – The Christmas dinner has not been booked yet, Mark offered to look into clubs for that and report back. A decision will be made on that this week. Regarding the issue of moving the golf outing back to Culbertson Hills: there was some more discussion about Riverside having a somewhat higher quality course and facility, but lower quality food. If Riverside can somehow guarantee that they can provide a better dinner, then we are likely to stay there. In lieu of raising our prices for the golf outing, and since the Riverside will not offer prime rib, we will need to select a different dinner buffet menu. Program Report – November meeting is scheduled for Siebebeurger Club with the topic of design. We will be having the same menu and cost as the last time we met here. January meeting through April meetings are all scheduled and were listed in the past newsletter. Rob is awaiting confirmation from Tessy Plastics to be our medical device manufacturing speaker in May. Advertising Report – Don was not available, Rob will contact him regarding the Christmas book advertising. Lynzie will prepare an updated membership list for the book.

Student Chapter Report – no report. Awards Chair – Member of the year committee is soliciting nominees. Old Business – The member’s scholarship we are offering is ready to distribute. A notice has been written to place in the newsletter. The scholarship deadline is May 1, 2011, and the notice will run in every newsletter through April 2011. The application will also be posted on the NWPA SPE website. New Business – Brad Johnson and Behrend CE dept are planning to hold the Injection molding conference again this summer. There may be a possible co-sponsored activity again. Jon Meckley sent a request for $500 to support the Plastcar event. Dennis reiterated that he would like receipts, but motioned that we approve the request. Mark seconded, ayes have it, motion passed. Rob will remind Jon that we need receipts; we would like to know what the money is used for. Lucy asked that we get a photograph of the winning team with the trophy so we can print it in the newsletter. Trevor motioned to adjourn, motion seconded by Shelly. Meeting adjourned at 6.55 pm. Next meeting will be 5.30pm Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at Plastikos. Respectfully submitted, Lucy Lenhardt, SPE Secretary 2010-2011
