PRIDE “An Inside View of Education – Based Interscholastic Athletics at Fort Loramie”

Respect In athletics, respect can take on many different forms. Quite a few state athletic associations have some sort of motto about respecting officials, athletes, coaches, and spectators. Even our own Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) has a RESPECT THE GAME motto that touches on this very value in education-based athletics. While I whole-heartedly agree with this mass appeal approach, I strongly feel that this core value, the respect we try to instill in our athletes here at Fort Loramie, is one of individual concern. I would like us to focus more on some of the methods an athlete can use to demonstrate RESPECT. On the surface, RESPECT THE GAME is more of a collective request; however, digging a bit deeper we find that this notion of respecting the game is about being open to growth. In athletic terms, the athlete is coachable. They are able to take correction as a compliment, equate correction as a byproduct of the coach seeing potential, and have enough confidence to not feel criticized or singled out. When corrected, their body language and voice are saying, "thanks for believing in me and that I am capable of being better.” This shows self-respect, a desire for excellence and continual self-improvement. Their ability to work hard and learn assists in the production of the next part of the core value of respect: confidence.

Confidence is closely related to arrogance and an athlete must be mindful of which they are portraying. The respectful athlete has a quiet, inner confidence based on preparedness. They have a true sense of being intellectually competent with their preparation and performance. True team confidence is gained from this collective preparation of the group. Genuine confidence is based on belief, and belief is based on consistency of accomplishment and daily work habits. Finally, it is essential that an athlete demonstrate respectful pride. I have discussed the concept of PRIDE in a previous article but to reiterate, the good kind of pride comes from the shared joy of the inner circle of athletes. It allows teams to take ordinary things and make them special, and allows individuals to be aware and appreciate other people, roles and accomplishments. By being self-indulgent or arrogant, you destroy the confidence and respect needed to push a team to excellence. Athletes that can truly RESPECT THEIR GAME have made the choices necessary to be unselfish with their effort and attention, their preparation can be counted on by teammates and they have committed to developing the strength of the program.
