Purpose “But effort and courage are not enough without purpose and direction. For, as Socrates told us, ‘If a man does not know to what port he is sailing, no wind is favorable.’” – John F. Kennedy

Sports give us an immeasurable opportunity to educate athletes and develop character traits that will benefit them for the rest of their lives, pushing them to achieve at a higher level. That achievement is perpetuated by strong character traits, the most important being a person’s resolve or determination in discovering success: conviction of PURPOSE. I am going to make a bold assertion when it comes to the reason for why we play competitive sports, one we have started to ignore and it is this: The purpose of competition is to win and the further we get from this idea, we are teaching our athletes that mediocrity is a viable option. Cue the pitchforks and torches… but before you do, let me explain. I am not saying that winning is the only acceptable outcome, nor am I saying that being an average athlete is unacceptable, I personally reside directly in the middle of that group. What I am saying is without determination to succeed it is likely that success will not frequent your endeavors. In the simple words of Zig Ziglar, “if you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time.” Obviously,

it is not reasonable to be extraordinary in every venture but eventually, through a combination of trial and error, passion and purpose will merge and success will follow. Continuously striving to find that combination of passion and purpose is essential to a fulfilling life regardless of your chosen vocation. Therein lies the crux of why using sports to facilitate this trait in our youth, the desire to be successful, and helping them find what fuels their resolve, is important for their overall development into adults. Success is no stranger to Fort Loramie. Everywhere you turn there is unity in a common goal, high achievement, and a burning desire to be successful. A total of 8 State Championships, numerous individual and team accomplishments, a National Blue Ribbon Elementary School and unwavering support of our district are all prime examples of having purpose to succeed. Collectively, this town has a history of success through knowing what it wants to accomplish and getting it done. Success breeds success and clearly that is our purpose.
