Revelation Series Study Sheet Week 11—July 15 Message Title: When People Pray Text: Revelation 8

Read Revelation 8 How do you respond to the description of prayer in v2-3? What assurance, comfort or hope does it give you? What word best describes your prayer life? Why do we find prayer so difficult? What are the major barriers to prayer that you experience? How can these barriers be overcome? In this message, Reuben said that when we pray something always happens; God always acts, just not always in the way we ask for or expect. Have you found this to be true? Share some examples. George Herbert describes prayer as “reversed thunder,” based on the description in Rev 8:4-5. What do you think he means by this? Reuben suggested that the series’ of judgements in v6-13 are symbolic descriptions of what happens to the powers of evil every time somebody prays. How does this change the way you think about the affects of your prayers? Eugene Peterson wrote that, “prayer...is the most practical thing anyone can do.” Do you agree with this? Why or why not? How does prayer change you? Share from your own experience. What are some creative, practical ways of praying that you could experiment with? When/if you do pray, who or what do you typically pray for? How could you broaden out your prayer life to pray for other things, people and events? Prayer is not only speaking, but also listening. Do you spend time listening to God and simply enjoying his presence? How could you go about doing more of this? Do you honestly desire a deeper prayer life? What are some practical steps you could take toward this? Spend some time praying for one another and being attentive to the presence of God.
