Village Life in Cambodia—ALWS Awareness Week 2014
Rice Farming Rice is the staple food in Cambodia and in many countries around the world. Families need to grow or buy a lot of rice in order to survive.
25m x 25m
The size of a plot of land needed to produce enough rice for ONE person for a year in an average poor Cambodian village. This plot will produce a minimum of 250kg of rice and much more if optimum growing conditions are met. This food is enough for one person to eat for the year—with hopefully enough extra produced to store for the 13kg of seed needed to replant the plot in the next season and enough to keep extra in the rice bank. If all optimum conditions are met, this plot could produce 750kg of rice.
50m x 50m
The size of a plot of land needed to produce enough rice for TWO people for a year in an average poor Cambodian village. This plot will produce a minimum of 500kg of rice and much more if optimum growing conditions are met. This food is enough for two people—with hopefully enough extra produced to store for the 25g of seed needed to replant the plot next season, and enough to keep extra in the rice bank. If all optimum conditions are met, the plot could produce 1500kg of rice.
100m x 100m The size of a plot of land needed to produce enough rice for a family of FOUR people for a year in an average poor Cambodian village. This plot will produce a minimum of 1 tonne (100kg) of rice and much more if optimum growing conditions are met. This food is enough for four people—with hopefully enough extra produced to pay for the 50kg of seed needed to store to replant the plot next year, and to keep extra in the rice bank. If all optimum conditions are met, the plot could produce 2 1/2 tonnes of rice.

A family of 6 people requires about 2 1/2 kg of rice each day to meet the UN recommendation for enough calories. For poor famers, rice is eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner— sometimes with a few vegetables. Other Cambodians have less rice and more vegetables, and sometimes a little meat.
