30 January 2015 From the Head Teacher The school is as busy as ever and, as we have a few important events approaching, now is a good time for a quick update. As always, please contact me at school should you need any further information or clarity. ‘Open’ Writing Lessons – Week Commencing Monday 2 February (next week) I am pleased to announce that next week will be our latest ‘open’ lessons week. Since their introduction last year, many of you have visited such lessons and we know from your feedback that you find them enjoyable and informative. This term we are focusing upon writing – a subject in which there have been lots of exciting developments within the last few months. The purpose of the ‘open’ lessons is to allow parents/carers the chance to visit lessons to see up-to-date teaching techniques and keep up-to-date with children’s learning. You are most welcome to visit any day next week between 9.00 – 10.00 am. I do hope you will be able to visit and look forward to seeing you. Head Teacher Update Meeting – Wednesday 4 February at 10.00 am Parents/carers and other members of our school community are most welcome to join me for my latest update meeting as detailed above. As usual, this will be an informal get together to discuss school issues – suggestions welcome. This is a nice way of keeping in touch. Again, I hope you will be able to join me. Please note that the time of this meeting has been changed to allow visitors to see the ‘open’ lessons and then attend the head teacher update meeting afterwards. Novel Study Books At my last head teacher update meeting it was suggested that parents/carers would like to know the titles of the books being studied in daily English lessons. I have pleasure in listing them as follows: Y3 Y4 Y5 Y6
Esio Trot – Roald Dahl The Iron Man – Ted Hughes Street Child – Berlie Doherty On Flannan Isle –Wilfrid Wilson Gibson The Tide Rises – Henry Longfellow
I hope you find this useful. Spring Term ‘Meet the Teacher’ – Monday 23 Feb 4.00 – 5.30 pm / Thursday 26 Feb 5.30 – 7.00 pm We will be holding our spring term meetings in the first week back after half term. These are very important meetings which enable your child’s class teacher to update you on his/her progress since our last meetings in the autumn term. It is important that your child also attends the meeting so he/she is part of the discussion. Please see my separate ‘Meet the Teacher’ appointment letter which will be sent out shortly.
Habershon House Residential Visits I would like to say a huge ‘Well Done’ to both Y6 classes who recently took part in their week long residential visits to Habershon House near Filey. Both parties gained a great deal from the experience of being away from home and working outdoors in the wintry conditions. Behaviour was of an excellent standard and we are proud of everyone’s positive attitude. I must also thank my staff colleagues who worked so hard to ensure the children were well prepared and cared for on both visits. Another great success! Wintry Weather As can be expected at this time of year, there will be a risk of snowy weather. If you think there is a chance we may be closed, please check the following:
Mobile phone as we will send a text to all parents informing of closure Rosehill Website ‘Latest News’ (www.rosehilljuniorschool.co.uk) Tune in to Radio Hallam or visit website (www.hallamfm.co.uk) Tune in to Rother FM or visit website (www.rotherfm.co.uk)
Please note that closures are extremely rare at Rosehill. Please make the above checks before calling school. Safety around the School Site As you know, Kilnhurst Road is extremely busy, especially at the end of the school day. The school’s governing body is seriously concerned about the level of congestion outside the school at this time as pedestrians often have to step onto the road to get around large groups of people on the pavement. In an attempt to control this we ensure children are sent out through certain gates in order to spread them out as much as possible. We now urgently need anyone picking up children from school to come through the gates and stand inside the playground so the pavement is kept more clear. Please take this request very seriously as we wish to minimise the risk of accidents. On a related issue, parents raised concerns about members of the school community smoking near the school gates and bringing dogs to the school gates. As Rosehill holds the Advanced Healthy Schools Award I would request that any visitors refrain from smoking outside school and avoid bringing dogs close to the premises in order to keep everyone safe from harm. Thank you. Finally… That’s all from school at the moment but I hope to meet you at some of our planned events in the forthcoming weeks. Best wishes
Mr M Wagstaff M.Ed Head Teacher
