Wrestling Good luck to Coach Kyle Poyer and the HSE Wrestlers as they compete tomorrow and Saturday in the IHSAA State Finals at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Competing this weekend are Joe Mazero (170) and Alec Jessup (182). Joe finished in third place last Saturday at New Castle to advance to this weekend’s Finals. IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (2-13-17) Promoting education based athletics in Indiana Super Bowl 51 was Tom Brady's fifth title. His leadership and grit helped lead his team back from a 28-3 deficit. This game will no doubt seal Brady's legacy as the best quarterback to ever play the game. However, Brady still realizes he is part of the team and not the team. When asked why there has never been any friction between him and his coach, Brady answers quite simply: "He's the coach, I'm the player." That simple philosophy is a quality that all athletes should take to heart. Do you listen to your coach? Do you let outside influences affect your attitude towards your coach? If your coach asks you to do something, do you abide? The most successful teams are those that believe in their coach and the system he (she) runs! All content property of Billy Shepherd Sports Inc.

HSE Athletics Blog By Mark Morrow Could the HSE basketball programs be destined to finish second in both the girls and boys Hoosier Crossroads Conference basketball races this season? The Lady Royals, of course, were runners-up to Zionsville. Now, the Royals need a victory on Feb. 17, coupled with a Zionsville loss, in order to share the HCC boys title. The Royals, reigning HCC champions, have been chasing the Eagles for the title ever since they lost in overtime at Zionsville on a 3-pointer at the buzzer. HSE (4-1 HCC) next plays at Brownsburg. Are odds good for the Royals? Yep . . . pretty likely. Fishers HS (2-3) entertains Zionsville (5-0) that same night. Are odds good that the Tigers can deliver the knockout punch? Nope, probably just wishful thinking at best. But that’s why they play the games. You just never know. HSE’s victory at then-No. 6 Carmel over the weekend was not as big of a surprise as possibly the 21-point margin. But it also stands to reason that the Tiger Nation surly was stunned after visiting Franklin Central blew past the Tigers 66-30. Again, that’s why they play the games. You just never know. Speaking of the HCC . . . Senior Zach Gunn leads the way in points per game (21.4), and rebounds (8.8) and is second in blocked shots (1.3). That’s not a surprise. After all, he’s one of the best players in the Hoosier land. But maybe somewhat surprising, possibly, is that based on points per 32 minutes played, the top five point-producers in the conference are ALL starters for HSE. Gunn is No. 1 (26.4), followed by Jack Davidson (16.3), Connor Rotterman (15.1), Aaron Etherington (13.2) and Noah Smith (10.9). Noah Smith also ranks fourth in assists (3.6) and fifth in steals (1.5). Drawings Show Pairings for the 107th Indiana high school boys basketball tourney will be announced on Sunday, Feb. 19. You can watch at 5 p.m. on web stream (IHSAAtv.org) or Television (Fox Sports Indiana) or radio (IHSAA Champions Network). Sectionals will be played on February 28, March 1, 3 & 4. HSE is in the 7-team Sectional 8 field that involves six Hamilton County Schools and Anderson of Madison County. Also joining the Royals and host Carmel are Fishers HS, Guerin Catholic, Noblesville and Westfield. The Carmel Sectional winner advances to Logansport this year, joining winners from Carroll (Fort Wayne), Fort Wayne Wayne and Lafayette Jeff. Did You Know . . . Cam Harris, a member of the HSE junior varsity basketball team, is playing sports for the first time in 2 years. He’s had a pin in his hip. The 5-10 sophomore is the brother of 2012 Indiana Mr. Basketball Gary Harris.

Just a thought . . . Just guessing that maybe, just maybe . . . well . . . that HSE head boys soccer coach Chris White might love for 7-foot-1 freshman Mabor Majak to decide to come out for the soocer squad next fall. After watching the big fellow grab and swat basketballs away this season, I can’t help but wonder what it would be like to see him applying his 7-4 wingspan around a goalie’s net. Since White is a basketball assistant for the Royals varsity, he gets to see Mabor in action at practice and in games quite often. Notables . . . *—After the annual state championship plunge by the Carmel girls — No. 31 if you are counting — the HCC represented itself quite well. Fishers HS was third, HSE 9th, and Zionsville 10th. Three HCC teams in the top 10. And Avon was 19th and Noblesville 34th. Hey, that’s pretty good! *—The HSE wrestlers — second and fourth at the sectional and regional, respectively, to Hamilton County champion Carmel — had the best finish at the semi state (11th) among all Hamilton County schools. And this group was pretty young! Also, good luck to seniors Alec Jessop (182) and Joe Mazero (170) at this weekend’s State Finals. *—Four Hamilton County high schools rank among the top 10 in state-wide IHSAA enrollments announced this week. Carmel is No. 1 at 5,000 students, Fishers HS is No. 7 (3,250), HSE is No. 9 (3,118) and Noblesville is 10th (2,882). *Mark Morrow, who has resided in Fishers since 1989, formerly owned Hamilton County Sports Daily.
