2017 UTSA Roadrunners Football UTSA 20, Rice 7 Saturday, Oct. 21 Alamodome · San Antonio, Texas Rice Postgame Quotes Head Coach David Bailiff On his general thoughts of the game … “We as coaches have got to figure out a way offensively to score points and how to eliminate the mistakes that were made. We continue to have self-inflicted wounds that stall drives. The interception…we as coaches, too, have got to get those guys on the same page. We can’t have our offense giving up points when the defense is on the field. You know going into the game there’s going to be some growing pains with a young quarterback. He will continue to get better each week. But again, we have got to find a way offensively to generate more than seven points a game. We cannot continue to keep making the mistakes that we are making. It’s very frustrating because today it was four holding penalties. We’ve been the least penalized team in Conference USA. We lost the turnover battle again. You’re not going to win if you’re not winning the turnovers. That’s a stat we continue to lose.” “Our defense is playing at a high level keeping people out of the endzone. They’re playing at a level that’s good enough that we should be able to win some of these games. But you win and lose as a football team. Coaches lose games and players win them, and we as coaches have to step up and if it’s change the personnel or find the playmakers or adjust the plays…that’s what we gotta do.” On the defense only giving up one touchdown … “Yeah, as I said, the defense is playing at a level that we can win these football games. It’s a team sport though. It’s the defense’s job to hold them to one less. And it’s the offense’s job to score one more. I am extremely proud of the effort that Brian Womac continues to just amaze me with what he’s done on the field this year. We gotta still continue to get more turnovers and that’s been a point of emphasis. I’m pleased with the defense and pleased with many parts of the special teams. We gotta get our punt returner to put his heels on the eight and not go back, but that’s a freshman that we trust enough to put in there. That’s some of the growing pains when you put a young man in there. But he won’t make the same mistake again.” On Davenport’s play tonight … “He’s an incredible player and we knew that coming into the game. We’ve watched him…he’s going to make a lot of money playing this game. It’s hard for a defensive end. That’s another thing, too. Sam’s got to learn that when we run the option at him, that you really have to go downhill at him and make him commit. And then he can’t play the quarterback and the pitch. I’m not taking anything away from Davenport. That last sack he blew past our tackle, but he’s that great a player. You’ve got to be aware of where he is every play of the game.” Sam Glaesmann, Fr., QB On his general thoughts of the game … “I need to play better. I’m the one who touches the ball on every play of the game. I was 3 for 9 tonight and that’s unacceptable from the quarterback position. I need to play better if we’re going to start winning football games. The offensive line played well tonight. I know the capabilities that they have and I trust them with everything in me. All around as a total offense I think we need to play better.” On shaking off being on the sidelines for a few games … “That’s the game of football. I’ve been playing since I was a little kid. I think the couple of weeks off didn’t really affect my rate of play. Going from Standford to UTEP to Houston to here…it’s the same game. There’s nothing that really surprised me about this game, I just need to play better. I need to prepare better, from the film room to practice to the weight room. Everything in my arsenal I need to better in order for us to win.”
