2013 UTSA Roadrunners Football Houston 59, UTSA 28 Saturday, Sept. 28 Alamodome · San Antonio, Texas UTSA Postgame Quotes Head Coach Larry Coker Opening statement … “I told our players we have a good football team, but we didn’t finish today. The fourth quarter was a disaster. When you turn the ball over four times, you are not going win. I don’t care who you’re playing. Where we are, we do not have a lot of margin for error. We don’t have to play perfect, but we have to play better than we did today. I am very proud of the way the guys fought. Down by 10, we had the blocked field goal. We came back and cut it to three, but we could not hang with them in the fourth quarter.” On the difference between the two halves … “There wasn’t a main difference, we just did not play well in the fourth quarter. We had too many turnovers and just didn’t play well in the fourth quarter.” On the missed opportunities … “Eric Soza statistic-wise had super game through three quarters. He had a ton of yards and a ton of completions, but we had missed opportunites. When you play good teams, you have to make those plays.” On the blocked field goal taking the wind out of the team … “As tight as that game was, sure it does. Things like that deflate you and can take away your energy.” On the defense stepping up to keep the team in the game … “Being that Houston has speed at the receiver position, they can make big plays, but our defense made big plays too. I think they played better in the second half than they did in the first half.” On Houston quarterback John O’Korn … “He’s a freshman and he plays well. We were close to him several times, but he’s elusive and can make plays with his feet. He is dangerous when he gets out of the pocket and give him credit for that.” On the running game today compared to last week … “Houston is big up front and that created problems for us. We need to be more consistent with the running game. I will have to look at the tape, but we just have to keep pressing on.” On looking forward to Marshall … “Marshall is a really good football team with an NFL-caliber quarterback. We are on the road and face a big challenge next week. This will test our maturity to bounce back from this game both physically and mentally. Mentally, this was a tough loss.”
Eric Soza, Sr., QB On the Houston defense in the fourth quarter … “With a team like that, we can’t have that many turnovers and missed opportunites. We have to take care of the ball, but give credit to them. They were in the right place and had a great scheme against us.” On missed opportunities to take the lead … “You have to play quality football to have a chance. With (Evans) Okotcha, I thought the pass was on the money and it was one of those things that it was an inch too far. Give them credit, they had (Tyus) Bowser putting pressure on me.” On being down 31-28 going into the fourth quarter … “We had them right where we wanted, only three points down going into the 4th quarter, but we just gave up to many points and had too many turnovers. You just can’t do that.” On the game being tied at halftime … “It was a 0-0 ball game and we were going to go win it in the second half. Our motto is to start fast and finish strong and we didn’t finish strong today. We made mistakes and they made plays.” On moving past the loss and preparing for Marshall … “It’s the 24-hour rule. We can hurt for 24 hours, but tomorrow at practice we will get ready for our second conference game. We have to learn from our mistakes and move on. Our focus will be getting ready for the Thundering Herd.” Kam Jones, Jr., WR On being down 31-28 going into the fourth quarter … “I don’t think we tired, we just made too many mistakes in the fourth quarter. They just made plays at the right time.” On the incomplete pass to Eric Soza near the end zone … “We ran that play in practice and it was perfect, but, today, I think I got a little anxious. When I let it go, I knew it was short.” Steven Kurfehs, Sr., LB On the final score not being indicative of how close the game was … “It’s frustrating, but it is also a learning experience. We shot ourselves in the foot a couple of times. Their quarterback had to get out of the pocket and make plays downfield. He just capitalized on our mistakes.” On the defense’s play in the third quarter … “We just caught our second wind. We made adjustments and were able to get some stops.” On Houston quarterback John O’Korn … “For a freshman he’s really good. We tried to get pressure on him, but he was able to move out of the pocket and make plays downfield.”
