Sardis Baptist Tutoring Children Ministry

Tammy Widua is the Director of the Sardis Baptist After School and Summer Program that began in September of 2004. Tammy states, “ We started the ministry with the prayer of impacting needy families in our community by focusing on a healthy mind, body and soul. We do this through providing balanced and nutritious supper that is USDA approved, physical activity, daily tutoring, and solid biblical teachings.” The ministry currently supports 45 children through school year with tutoring and homework help. The students continue learning through the summer months. Tammy says that we have seen tremendous growth in the children we serve. Because we have a heavy emphasis on reading, even those who come to us as struggling readers quickly catch up to grade level and beyond! We focus almost entirely on reading/writing activities through the summer and after just 4 weeks we have logged in over 6,000 pages read and 120 book reports! While continuing education is a large part of what the Tutoring Program at Sardis Baptist Church does, meeting the spiritual needs of the family comes first. Children are taught from the Bible to help them navigate life in a way that is pleasing to our Lord. The motto for the summer is “Learning About God, Using the Bible, Living for Jesus!” That is what our main focus will ALWAYS be. Sardis Baptist has invested heavily in the our ASP/Summer ministry because the members of the church know that these children may never hear the Gospel in any other way. Recently volunteers from Sardis Baptist Church attended a Tutoring Children and Youth workshop led by Cathy and Darrell Smith. Tammy states, “We greatly appreciated Cathy and Darrell Smith and their ministry of teaching us better ways to teach literacy skills. We are already putting those skills to use and hope to someday soon branch out to teach literacy to adults so that we can impact the whole family!”
