From the Rabbi Candy Throwing Celebratory moments in life are few and far between and we must do all we can to maximize our ability to rejoice in them. In an effort to foster a warm and supportive environment for KMS smachot I have decided to allow the throwing of candy in shul. I do so with great hesitancy. I am concerned for the dignity and decorum of our tefila which is not only important from a religious perspective, but also a core value of KMS. I ask you to please help me in making this a successful and positive experience by working hard to flow smoothly and quickly from the candy throwing right back to a quiet, non-talking, decorous state so that we can move forward expediently with the tefila.

The following are the parameters for throwing candy that we will be trying out starting this Shabbat.  Candy must be purchased by the family and checked in to the office during the week.  Candy should be passed out in as quietly as possible.  Only soft candy may be thrown.  Candy will be thrown during the singing of “Siman Tov” which takes place after the special Simcha MiSheberach recited by the rabbi (this will enable equal candy throwing opportunities for bat mitzvah girls and bar mitzvah boys). I will say the MiSheberach and begin the singing, at which point candy may be thrown.  When the singing ends we will wait for everybody to be quiet before proceeding with the service. To make sure our tefila keeps its momentum and that we end in a timely fashion, I ask you to return to your seats, quiet down as quickly as possible, and help me to reintroduce a more serious tone for the rest of tefila. I hope we can make this a festive and enjoyable feature of KMS that will only enhance our spirit and not detract. Thanks so much for your cooperation. Rabbi Weinberg
