U.S. SNOWFALL SUMMARY Season-to-Date
2016 – 2017 Snow Season • • •
Total snowfall amounts for October through April were 24% above last season, but 13% below normal. Normal seasonal snowfall for the 93 largest metropolitan markets is 2,595.0 in. This season, there was 2,257.7 in. of snow reported. Last year, 1,816.5 in. of snow was reported. Overall, the 2016 - 2017 season had more activity than LY, but was a volatile season. Early in the season, accumulating snowfall was challenging due to a lack of cold air in the U.S. Colder air provided opportunity in December, but warmer temperatures returned mid-season. In March, colder air in the Northeast led to significant snowfall in some major markets. Warmth returned to the East and Plains in April, closing out a less than normal snowfall season. 2

U.S. SNOWFALL SUMMARY April 2017 Snowfall was 60% Below Last Year and 62% Below Normal. • •
•
Snowfall totals were less than last year and normal as warmer temperatures limited snow accumulation. Overall, April 2017 was warmest since 2002. Conditions were wettest since 2011, with the least snowfall since 1981. – Early in the month (4/1), a system made its way through New England and dropped snow in Portland, ME (7.9 in.), Binghamton, NY (1.2 in.), and Boston, MA (1.2 in.). – In the first full week of the month (4/6 – 4/7), Cleveland, OH (2.8 in.) and Buffalo, NY (2.3 in.) reported snowfall. Snowfall totals in these markets were less than normal for the month. – Late month (4/29 – 4/30), Amarillo, TX (2.0 in.) and Goodland, KS (4.8 in.) recorded snowfall; both markets received above normal snowfall for the month. Denver, CO (2.4 in.) also reported snow from this system. Normal April snowfall for the 93 largest metropolitan markets is 155.1 in. – 59.1 in. fell this year (148.4 in. fell last year).
April Snowfall (in.) U.S. Markets
Consumer Impact – April is typically the month when snow activity is limited in most locations except for the interior Northeast and higher elevations of the West. Late season snowfall in major markets outside of those areas created challenging conditions for retailers as most businesses are out of snow removal inventory and are looking to promote spring seasonal product.

U.S. SNOWFALL SUMMARY March 2017 Snowfall was 109% Above Last Year and 1% Above Normal. • •
•
Snowfall totals were above last year and normal as colder temperatures supported snow accumulation, particularly in the Northeast. Overall, March 2017 was the coldest since 2014. Although conditions were driest since 2015, there was the most snowfall since 2014. – In the first few days of March (3/1 – 3/4), Green Bay, WI (5.9 in.) and Cleveland, OH (5.2 in.) were the only major markets to report notable snow. – In the 1st full week of the month (3/5 – 3/11), Billings, MT (9.8 in.), Pittsburgh, PA ( 3.9 in.), New York, NY (2.5 in.), and Nashville, TN (1.5 in.) all recorded snow. – In the 2nd full week of the month (3/12 – 3/18), the Northeast was impacted by a significant snowstorm that dropped snow in Burlington, VT (30.4 in.), Syracuse, NY (26.1 in.), Harrisburg, PA (17.2 in.), Albany, NY (17.0 in.), Portland, ME (16.4 in.), New York, NY (7.4 in.), Philadelphia, PA (6.6 in.), and Pittsburgh, PA (6.0 in.). Other markets that received notable snowfall for the week were Chicago, IL (7.7 in.), Detroit, MI (6.6 in.), and Cleveland, OH (3.6 in.). – In the 3rd full week (3/19 – 3/25), Flagstaff, AZ (8.0 in.) was the only market to report significant snow. – Throughout the final days of the month (3/26 – 3/31), Hartford, CT (1.0 in.) and Boston, MA (0.6 in.) reported minimal snowfall totals. – Denver International Airport did not report any measurable snowfall in the month of March. The only other years this airport did not report measurable snowfall in March were 1995 and 2012. This helped Denver set a new record-low seasonal snowfall total of just 19.3 in. overall, breaking the previous record-low seasonal snowfall amount of 19.9 in. set back in the 1884-1885 winter season. Normal March snowfall for the 93 largest metropolitan markets is 416.1 in. – 421.1 in. fell this year (201.9 in. fell last year). March Snowfall (in.)
Consumer Impact – March is typically the month when snowfall slows down in most eastern markets. Late season snowfall in the East, coupled with colder than normal temperatures, supported retailers as they tried to work through residual winter inventory.

U.S. SNOWFALL SUMMARY February 2017 Snowfall was 5% Above Last Year and 15% Below Normal. • •
•
Snowfall totals were less than normal but above last year as warmer temperatures hindered snow accumulation. Early month snowfall in the Northeast allowed snowfall totals to exceed last year. Overall, February 2017 was warmest for the month in over 55 years. All states except for Oregon and Washington trended warmer than normal for the month of February. – At the beginning of the month (2/1 – 2/4), Spokane, WA (8.6 in.), Syracuse, NY (7.1 in.), and Detroit, MI (1.5 in.) all reported snow. – In the 1st full week of the month (2/5 – 2/11), Harford, CT (16.8 in.), Albany, NY (13.3 in.), New York, NY (10.0 in.), Pittsburgh, PA (5.2 in.), Harrisburg, PA (3.6 in.), Indianapolis, IN (2.1 in.), Philadelphia, PA (2.0 in.), and Cleveland (1.7 in.) all recorded snow. – In the 2nd full week of the month (2/12 – 2/18), Portland, ME (21.5 in.), Burlington, VT (20.5 in.), Syracuse, NY (19.1 in.), Albany, NY (7.6 in.), and Boston, MA (5.4 in.) recorded notable snowfall totals. – In the 3rd full week of the month (2/19 – 2/25), Green Bay, WI (5.5 in.) and Denver, CO (1.6 in.) were the only major markets to receive notable snowfall. – Throughout the final days of the month (2/26 – 2/28), Salt Lake City, UT (3.7 in.) was the only major market to report snowfall over 3 inches. Normal February snowfall for the 93 largest metropolitan markets is 516.8 in. – 440.2 in. fell this year (418.7 in. fell last year).
February Snowfall (in.) Consumer Impact – February is historically the month when snowfall totals begin to decrease in most major markets and retailers are able to clean out their residual inventory. A below normal January and February has resulted in a challenging end-of-season inventory clearance for snow removal products.

U.S. SNOWFALL SUMMARY January 2017 Snowfall was 10% Below Last Year and 21% Below Normal. •
•
•
Snowfall totals were less than normal and last year due to warmer conditions in the eastern half of the country. Below normal temperatures in the western third of the U.S. led to above normal snowfall from Arizona to the Pacific Northwest. Overall, temperatures in the U.S. were warmer than average for January, limiting total snowfall. – In the 1st week of January (1/1 – 1/7), New York, NY (8.3 in.), Boston, MA (8.1 in.), Richmond, VA (7.1 in.), Kansas City, KS (2.2 in.), Memphis, TN (2.0 in.), Oklahoma City, OK (1.7 in.), Charlotte, SC (1.1 in.), Little Rock, AR (1.0 in.), Raleigh, NC (0.5 in.), and Nashville, TN (0.4 in.) all reported snow. In the West, Salt Lake City, UT (12.1 in.), Denver, CO (4.1 in.), and Seattle, WA (3.0 in.) reported notable amounts. – In the 2nd week of the month (1/8 – 1/14) Flagstaff, AZ (24.4 in.), Duluth, MN (8.3 in.), Green Bay, WI (6.2 in.), Minneapolis, MN (5.0 in.), Cleveland, OH (1.0 in.), and New York, NY (0.6 in.) all recorded snow. – In the 3rd full week of the month (1/15 – 1/21), Salt Lake City, UT (7.9 in.), Denver, CO (2.2 in.), and Minneapolis, MN (0.6 in.) were the only major markets to record measurable snowfall. A significant ice storm in Portland, OR caused power outages and hazardous travel conditions. – Milder conditions returned for the final week of the month (1/22 – 1/28). Flagstaff, AZ (12.6 in.) added additional snow to its already substantial snowfall totals, while Salt Lake City, UT (2.7 in.) and Minneapolis, MN (2.2 in.) received lighter amounts. – In the final days of the month (1/29 – 1/31), Cleveland, OH (7.4 in.), Detroit, MI (6.6 in.), Grand Rapids, MI (5.8 in.), Green Bay, WI (5.8 in.), Pittsburgh, PA (3.2 in.), and New York, NY (1.2 in.) all reported snow. – Flagstaff, AZ measured 46.3” of snowfall this January, the most snow the city has seen in a single month since January 2010. Normal January snowfall for the 93 largest metropolitan markets is 656.2 in. – 516.5 in. fell this year (576.0 in. fell last year). January Snowfall (in.) U.S. Markets
Consumer Impact – January is historically the most active month for snowfall across most major markets. Typically, early season snow and ice events spike consumer demand for snow removal items such as ice melt and snow throwers, resulting in January accumulations being less impactful to consumer demand.

U.S. SNOWFALL SUMMARY December 2016 Snowfall was 94% Above Last Year and 15% Above Normal. • •
•
Snowfall totals were greater than last year due to a more active pattern in the West and Northern Tier. Overall, temperatures in the U.S. were close to average for December, although much needed cold swept in through key periods to support an active snow month. – In the first few days of the month, temperatures trended above normal which limited snowfall to higher elevations in the Rockies and West North Central region. – The first full week of December (12/4 – 12/10) started mild for the eastern U.S., but trended colder by the weekend. Accumulating snowfall took place in Grand Rapids, MI (14.7 in), Binghamton, NY (11.4 in.), and Chicago, IL (9.1 in.), supporting demand for winter clean-up items. – In the 2nd full week of the month (12/11 – 12/17), colder temperatures in the Northern Tier supported snowfall for many major markets and led to the snowiest week of the month. Buffalo, NY (24.6 in.), Grand Rapids, MI (18.2 in.), Detroit, MI (15.5 in.), Green Bay, WI (13.2 in.), Chicago, IL (8.1 in.), Cleveland, OH (6.4 in.), Boston, MA (5.2 in.), Pittsburgh, PA (5.0 in.), Columbus, OH (4.3 in.), Indianapolis, IN (3.9 in.), and New York, NY (3.0 in.) all reported notable snowfall. – Colder temperatures in the Northern Tier continued in the 3rd week of December (12/18 – 12/24), however major markets received minimal snowfall. Green Bay, WI (5.1 in.) and Syracuse, NY (5.1 in.) reported notable amounts. – Milder conditions returned for the final week of the month (12/25 – 12/31), with notable snow totals in Syracuse, NY (9.2 in.), Salt Lake City, UT (8.6 in.), Portland, ME (7.8 in.), and Cleveland, OH (2.8 in.). Normal December snowfall for the 93 largest metropolitan markets is 568.7 in. – 655.2 in. fell this year (337.6 in. fell last year).
December Snowfall (in.) Consumer Impact - December is historically the rampup month in terms of snow/ice events in northern and western regions of the U.S. Snow events this month brought considerable snow to the Northern Tier. As a result, the national snow trend was significantly above last year and also more than normal, supporting the need for winter clean-up items.

Billings, MT (2.3 in.), Minneapolis, MN (2.3 in.), Pittsburgh, PA (2.1 in.), Denver, CO (1.7 in.), Casper, WY ( 1.7 in.), Green Bay, WI (0.9 in.), and Cleveland, OH (0.9 in.). The snow totals in Binghamton resulted in the biggest snowstorm on record for the city. – During the final weekend of November, and into the following Monday (11/24 – 11/26), a snow system in northern New England resulted in notable amounts in Caribou, ME (7.5 in.) and Burlington, VT (1.2 in.). – In the final days of the month (11/27 – 11/30), a blizzard brought significant snow to the Northern Plains. Bismarck, ND (18.7 in.) and Pierre, SD (9.0 in.) each reported notable snow. An additional system moved through Caribou, ME (9.7 in.). In the West, an active pattern brought snow to Flagstaff, AZ (5.5 in.), Salt Lake City, UT (4.3 in.), Spokane, WA (2.6 in.), Missoula, MT (1.2 in.), and Reno, NV (0.6 in.). Normal November snowfall for the 93 largest metropolitan markets is 241.7 in. – 157.9 in. fell this year (130.8 in. fell last year).
November Snowfall (in.)
Consumer Impact - November historically can bring snow & ice events to northern and western U.S. regions. While a snow event mid-month brought considerable snow to portions of the Great Lakes, the national snow trend was less than normal, depressing the need for snow throwers, ice melt, winter wipers, and snow boots.

U.S. SNOWFALL SUMMARY October 2016 Snowfall was 142% Above Last Year but 81% Below Normal. •
•
•
Snowfall totals were above last year but well below normal due to warmer than normal temperatures across most of the U.S. – October 2016 was the 3rd warmest on record, slightly surpassing October of 2015. Late month (10/26 – 10/28), colder temperatures set the stage for snow across portions of the interior Northeast as a low pressure system moved through the region. For some, it was their first snow of the season. Albany, NY (1.7 in.), Hartford, CT (1.5 in.), Binghamton, NY (1.0 in.), and Syracuse, NY (0.2 in.) all recorded measurable snowfall. Normal October snowfall for the 93 largest metropolitan markets is 40.5 inches. – 7.5 in. fell this year (3.1 in. fell last year).
October Snowfall (in.) Consumer Impact – Early season snowfall events have historically stimulated demand for ice melt and snow removal categories, mainly in the high elevations out West. However, the unusual warmth with very limited winter conditions this month did not help to "move the needle" on early season sales.
