Description
Dynamic Warmup (15 mins) Set up a Y shape with 4 cones, and two cones to finish sequence. Space the cones to suite the age and ability of players. A passes to B and follows the pass, B then turns and passes to C and follows his pass, C receives pass and dribbles to the end cone. D begins the right side sequence when player C starts to dribble. Key Points Good quality passes, also can players put themselves in places for good angle and support.
Technical Exercise (20 mins) Chelsea Square w/Support Set up square, have half players on outside without a ball. The other half are inside the square paired with a partner. Both players move together and find a player on the outside to pass to, both players then come to support, (one to the left, one to the right). Pattern A, the ball is played to outside player then to the other partner. As ball is played to the outside player, the other supporting player should find themselves in space at a good angle. Then repeat pattern to another player on the outside. Pattern B the ball is played outside, then back to the same person, then to the partner. Again supporting player in space at a good angle. Then repeat pattern to another player on the outside. Switch roles after 1 minute (outside players go in, inside go out), can make it a game by seeing who can get 5 passing patterns the quickest. Key Points Players must work together to understand how to support each other. Both must go to support in 2 directions to create a triangle with outside partners. Body shape is also important, so they can play quicker, rather than needing extra touches to turn.
Tactical Exercise (20 mins) Possession Game w/Support Two teams of four play in the square. They must use the 4 target players to maintain possession. If the team can hit two target players they score 1 point. Switch teams out after 3 min’s. Key Points Can players support as in the previous exercise, and receive the ball with good shape and angle in space. Can they then look to play away from pressure and into space, and realize that just because its the closest target that it may not be the best target to play to.
Small Sided Game (20 mins) 4v4+4 Keep same teams from previous exercise, the neutral team has 2 players on the outside as bumpers, 2 players are keepers. Teams playing must play to one bumper and use a passing pattern from earlier exercises with support before going to goal. Switch roles after 3 minutes of play. Key Points Outside players must move into space and not be static on the outside. Since there are two bumper players, can they find the support that has the most space to keep the ball. Tell players to not play a ball into an area where they cannot get it out.
