A NOTE FROM OUR RECTOR

Dear Friends, On August 20, we will kick off our program year with Rally Day. We will join together in one worship service at 10:00 am, followed by lunch and time together. We are inviting the school community to join us in worship as we bless backpacks and pray for students and teachers. It is going to be an energizing day for our community. But, with some careful thought and planning, my guess is we can make it even better. My hunch is that every single one of us has a friend or two who could use the sort of spiritual home we offer at St. Peter's. These might be people who used to belong here, left at some point, and never reconnected with a church. It might be someone who never belonged to any church. I'm not sure who this person is in your life, but I imagine you have someone in mind. Statistics show that people are almost always inclined to visit a church if they are invited by a friend. It's as simple as that. So let me encourage you: think and pray about your community of friends, colleagues, and family. Ask God to point you in the direction of someone who is in need of a church home. Then invite that person to join us on August 20 at 10:00 am for joyful worship as we begin this new program year. It will make an already exciting day that much better.

God bless, Fr. Quinn+

PARISH NEWS

Our New Bishop The Bishop-Elect of the Diocese of East Tennessee is the Rev. Brian Cole, rector, Good Shepherd, Lexington, Kentucky, Diocese of Lexington. As the cathedral bells rang out through downtown Knoxville following his election, the Bishop-Elect sent this message: "With an open heart, I am both excited and humbled to be chosen by the lay and clergy delegates of the Episcopal Diocese of East Tennessee to serve as your 5th bishop. Susan and I look forward to joining with you all in practicing resurrection, in the apostolic work of revealing the Living Christ to a beautiful but broken world. We will be happy to see you as soon as we put down roots in Knoxville later in the year." The Bishop will be ordained and consecrated on December 2, 2017, at Church of the Ascension, Knoxville. He will be the 5th bishop of the Episcopal Church in East Tennessee. Change to ROTA Because of Rally Day, there will be only one service on Sunday, August 20, at 10:00 am. This change is not reflected in the ROTA that appears in your August newsletter. I apologize for any confusion. Those who are scheduled to participate in the 11:00 am service are asked to minister at the 10:00 am service instead. Please call the church office if you have a conflict and a substitute will be arranged.

News from CREATE During the month of August, CREATE requests donations of cotton underwear and white socks for Adult men and women. Please leave your donations on the bench inside the Bracewell Room.

Education for Ministry (EfM) EfM is a fantastic opportunity to learn about the Bible, church history, and Christian theology all in the context of a prayerful, intentional community. If that sounds interesting to you please be in touch with Fr. Quinn for information about the program and possibilities for a group at St. Peter's.

Request for Transportation A young man has requested a ride to St. Peter’s on Sunday mornings. He lives on East 16th Street downtown. For more information, call the Parish Administrator at 423-877-2428.

Sunday Noon Fellowship This Summer In thanksgiving for all our faithful Fellowship volunteers who provide refreshments so generously during the year, the Vestry will host the Sunday noon Fellowship all summer. Coffee, lemonade, and cookies will be provided in the Bracewell Room after the 11:00 am service. A Message from the Flower Guild Just a reminder that many Sundays are still available this year if you would like to

dedicate flowers for the altar in memory of a deceased loved one, in celebration of a special event, or in thanksgiving for a friend or family member. Check the poster in the Bracewell Room for openings. You may pick up a flower donation form in the church office or contact the Parish Administrator by phone or email. Please specify the date you prefer and whether you would like specific flowers or colors represented. The minimum donation is $35. Make checks payable to St. Peter’s Church and drop in the offering plate, bring by the church office, or mail.

Episcopal Churchmen Conference The 71st Annual Laymen's Conference sponsored by the Episcopal Churchmen of Tennessee will be held August 18-20, 2017, at the Dubose Conference Center in Monteagle, TN. Flyers for the conference are located in the foyer of the church. Registration can be made on line at Episcopal Churchmen of Tennessee (http://tnchurchmen.org). This is a great time for fellowship with fellow laymen from the Diocese of East Tennessee, Tennessee, and West Tennessee—lots of good food, activities, speakers, prayer, and just being on the mountain. Question? Contact Chip Stansbury or John Trieber.

Diocesan Announcement: Bishop’s Gift Beloved in Christ,

We have been blessed and privileged to have the Rt. Rev. George D. Young, III as our bishop. Under his tenure, the diocese has flourished. Alas, now we must say goodbye. It is customary, when a diocesan bishop retires, to collect a Voluntary Gift as a love offering to the departing bishop.

We, the Standing Committee, are writing to you to ask you for a monetary gift for this Voluntary Gift for the bishop. And we are asking you, laity and clergy, to be as generous with this gift as Bishop Young has been with us personally and professionally. It would be our privilege, as a diocese, to give Bishop Young a super Voluntary Gift upon the occasion of his retirement. Help us bless the lives of the bishop and Kammy! It is planned that we give the gift to the bishop and Kammy on the occasion of the celebration of the bishop’s ministry at Grace Point on Saturday, 28 October, 2017.

If you wish to be part of this wonderful project, please send your checks, endorsed to the Diocese of East Tennessee, to:

The Diocese of East Tennessee 814 Episcopal School Way Knoxville, TN 37932

Please also put “for the Bishop’s Voluntary Gift” in the note line. Please note also that, as a personal gift, this donation is not tax deductible. If you have questions, please feel free to call me at 423-276-5045.

In Christ, The Rev. Edward J. Mills III President, The Standing Committee
