October 2013—Volume 1, Issue 3

Are you interested in, and value yourself as an Admin? Do you take the time and make the effort to gain education that will enhance your job performance and get you promoted? You have to value yourself enough to say, “I need to make time for my growth through a scheduled event.” It does not matter if that event is an online course, a live workshop, webinar, or off-site retreat. Executives and great leaders are always investing in their education. They know it is necessary. So why should an assistant think any differently than the people they support? . . . . . . . Don’t short-change yourself. You are worth it. You need to make time for you. From: Joan Burge: [email protected] September 16, 2013 And, as the City of Roanoke Treasurer, Evelyn Powers CAP, so eloquently has stated many times, “It is because of my association and involvement with IAAP, that I have had the skills and confidence to become the Treasurer.” She always gives the credit to IAAP. Please invest in yourself with IAAP and everything that it offers you…..we have monthly education meetings, Division education opportunities three or more times a year, (PDS will be in Roanoke on Nov. 8 – 9) and an intense 5 day conference yearly on the international level. Avail yourself of every opportunity to grow; learn to speak in front of people, learn new skills, polish up on old ones, network with admins from all over the world, and bring new things back to your office. October 22 is the day when the Roanoke Chapter will celebrate our bosses and educate our employers on

how great IAAP is for us and for their companies. Invite your boss to come for lunch to celebrate Boss’ Day. They will learn all about IAAP and how important it is for you! Linda Leedy, CAP-OM President

My sister, Melody Wells, and I ran an 8k race at the Neptune Festival this past Saturday at VA Beach. Neither one of us run competitively, we run for the exercise and to prove to ourselves that we can complete it. We're not fast, but we aren't lying on the couch eating potato chips either. Just goes to prove that you can do anything you set your mind to do. You CAN pass the CAPOM exams!!

The Community Service project for October and November will be to fill stockings for the Salvation Army. If you would like to fill stockings for needy children, contact a member of the Community Service Committee. We will make arrangements to get the stockings to you. Please plan to return the filled stocking at the November meeting. A prize will be awarded to the person who fills the most stockings. We will continue to collect pop tops at each monthly meeting until June 2014. The Ronald McDonald House Charities collects pop tabs instead of entire aluminum cans because it's more hygienic to store tabs than cans, and collection and storage is easier. The program is an easy way for people of all ages to support RMHC and know they are making a difference for families and children. If you would like a collection box for your desk, break room or

home, contact a member of this committee.

FRISBEES ARE FOR THROWING! When I was in high school and college, I played a lot of Frisbee. (Legally, that should be stated “I played a lot of Frisbee® Disc,” but I don’t recall anyone ever saying it that way. In fact, I’m not sure I know how to pronounce ® in a sentence.) I especially enjoyed was freestyle Frisbee, which is like stunt Frisbee. Freestyle Frisbee involves tricks like spinning the disc on your fingernail and working it under your leg or around your back, popping it up into the air with your finger or toe or elbow or forehead, fancy throws and catches, and that kind of thing. To help the Frisbee spin freely on my fingernail, I would slick up the disc with spray silicone. I also would stick fake fingernails to my index and middle fingers using super glue, which kept the disc from getting hung up on the friction-causing skin of my fingertips. The fake fingernail thing distinguished freestyle Frisbee from many other sports. Make that all other sports. It also made for some interesting conversations with my dad. Freestyle Frisbee was a great sport for summer, or any time, but as the weather would get colder, the risks would rise; specifically, the risk to the disc. Tapping the Frisbee in cooler weather could cause the disc to crack right down the middle, ruining an $8 Frisbee. Back then, $8 was a lot of money. But it was the risk you took to play the game. One of the friends I played Frisbee with didn’t like taking that risk. In fact, he would buy Frisbees, but he didn’t want to crack them, so he would leave the Frisbees in their box. He wouldn’t use them because he was afraid to lose them. That always struck me as odd, but it wasn’t until I got older that I realized why. Now I say it all the time. In fact, my kids have gotten sick of this story, because whenever they ask me whether they should do this or try that, I tell them, YES! Frisbees are for throwing! They aren’t for leaving in the box! And WE’RE not for leaving in the box. John Shedd wrote, “A ship in harbor is safe, but that’s not what ships are built for.” And that’s not what we are built for! We are meant to explore, and to take risks, and to win sometimes and to lose more often. The drive to test our own limits is elemental. It is as fundamental as a salmon’s drive to swim upstream or a baby bird’s impulse to leap from the nest (or the mama bird’s impulse to push him out). We are meant to break bones, and to get stitches, and to experience set-backs and heartbreak and loss because it is only through adversity and discomfort that we grow.

So the next time you wonder whether you should try something, just remember: Frisbees are for throwing! Since our Professional Development Seminar (PDS) is November 8-9 at the Tanglewood Holiday Inn in Roanoke, you are probably asking, “Can I still shop the private sale if I am unable to attend on Saturday, November 9? Well, the answer is YES. Customers are welcome to reserve their desired merchandise for the event beginning on Sunday, November 3rd. Simply present your Charity Sale ticket to a Belk associate and ask them for details on reserving merchandise. Submitted by: Doris England, CAP-OM, Chair
