December 2013—Volume 1, Issue 5

Greetings to everyone! The Holiday season is in full swing. I know that all of you are as busy as I am. We have to make time to enjoy all of the family and friend gatherings, traditions, and office festivities. In this time when we are all so very busy, don’t forget to remember those less fortunate than ourselves who could use a good dose of our attention. The stockings have been delivered to the Salvation Army. Many thanks to everyone who filled stockings for children. Thanks also to Janice Taylor, CAP-OM and to Carolyn Finney one of our frequent guests, who bought and dressed dolls. Carolyn, as always, truly gives abundantly even while enjoying dressing a doll. The Roanoke Chapter is collecting gifts for two retirement home residents for our December project. Please see the list enclosed in this newsletter for how you can help. We can all breathe a little easier now that PDS has been completed. Many, many thanks to all of our chapter members, the best team ever, who worked many hours to make this event a success. Don’t miss the report on PDS and recap of the auction money donation in this newsletter. Mark your calendars and come to the Christmas social on December 17. It is our chapter’s 52nd Anniversary. We will celebrate that and also enjoy a wonderful time of fellowship and fun. The Dinner Reservation committee decided to charge the regular $16.50 each, for this meeting and also invite guests to join us. (spouses/significant others).

2014 is coming! In January we will be holding our first ever lunch time webinar that each of you will be able to attend from your work place. Please be inviting your co-workers to put this on their calendars and join you at 12 noon on Tuesday, January 27. This will be a great time to show how IAAP can provide education for admins. Be sure to reserve your room where you will have this webinar. Fellow members, get your co-workers excited about this webinar and put it on their calendars. I truly hope each of you enjoys a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! May you all have rest and relaxation that will bring renewed energy for IAAP in 2014! Thank you for all you do. Linda Leedy, CAP-OM President Roanoke Chapter IAAP

Professional Development Seminar On November 8-9, 2013 the Roanoke Chapter served as host for the 2013 Virginia-West Virginia Division Professional Development Seminar (PDS). Close to 60 members from across the division gathered at the Holiday Inn Tanglewood in Roanoke to have two days of learning, networking and lots of fun.

We started off on Friday afternoon with a room full of vendors displaying their wares, two massage therapists, and three “make-over” ladies from Mary Kay. If you weren’t relaxed when you arrived, you were when the massages were over. Friday night everyone came in their best pajamas and most comfortable slippers to have an evening of fun and merriment. Even the hotel’s bartender got in character in her PJ’s. Tim, the DJ, had us on the dance floor having a great time.

But the highlight of the night was the fantastic auction. Many of the members attending brought one or more “items” to be auctioned off. For each item they brought, they were given a ticket for a special P. Buckley Moss drawing. Our military-style auctioneer, Helene Ferguson, CAP, had us bidding on things we didn’t know we needed. And we spent more money than anyone thought we would spend but it was worth it. When the auction was over, we learned we had raised $1,005.00. A check was given to the Virginia Veterans Care Center in Roanoke for their Christmas project. The money will go a long way in providing gifts for the Veterans’ Christmas. Without a doubt it was the best event the division could possibly have. And to top it off, Karen Mason, CAP-OM, MOS, of the Charleston Chapter won the P. Buckley Moss print.

On Saturday we started the day with breakfast and vendors. Ladies can never get too many vendors. We had a division update from Division President Beth Hoss, CAP-OM. The first speaker of the day presented two 1-hour seminars. Dr. Patrice M. Weiss is a professor and chair of the Department of OB/GYN at the Carilion Clinic/Virginia Tech Carilion School of

Medicine. Her first topic was “Emotional Intelligence” and she had the attendees laughing and they were glued to their chairs. Her second seminar was “High Performance Teams.” This was a little dryer, but Dr. Weiss made the presentation stand out. Two recert points were awarded for Dr. Weiss’ presentations.

Following lunch, Major Kevin L. Foust, Deputy Chief and Assistant Director of Security for the Virginia Tech Police Department, joined us to talk about workplace violence and what we needed to do in case of an emergency. Major Foust was funny but serious about the topic. He shared with us how to handle ourselves in case of an active shooter and the concept of Run, Hide, and Fight. Unfortunately we weren’t awarded any recert points for his presentation but we still felt the 1 ½ hours we spent with him were definitely worth it. Just a few days following our seminar, we learned that the current Virginia Tech Police Chief will soon be leaving, and Major Foust will be Acting Chief starting in January 2014.

We ended the day with a presentation by one of the Roanoke Chapter members, Connie Smith, who shared her story about losing a co-worker to domestic violence. When it was time to adjourn, everyone felt that the time spent in Roanoke was very worthwhile. Doris P. England, CAP-OM and Gerri Richards, CAPOM, Co-chairs of 2013 PDS

Thank You Many thanks to everyone who filled Christmas stockings for the Salvation Army. Twenty-nine stockings have been delivered to the Salvation Army, and a few more will be returned next week. Your gifts will make Christmas a little brighter for some children in the Roanoke Valley. December Let’s not forget our seniors at Christmas! Our December project is to purchase and deliver gifts for residents at Our Lady of the Valley. We specifically requested residents who do not have family or friends to share gifts at Christmas, and we were given the names of two residents. Both are tall women with medium build and would probably need XL size. Here is a suggested gift list. Elizabeth Bed pajamas House shoes Socks Throw blanket (Diabetic - so no candy, please)

June Bed pajamas House shoes Socks Throw blanket Amplifying hearing aide (Around $30. Can be purchased at drug stores or Wal-Mart Hunting Department)

Feel free to purchase gifts for these ladies or donate cash and the Community Service Committee members will do the shopping. Donations will be collected at the December meeting, or contact us for pick up. Let us know if you are interested in visiting the residents to deliver the presents (date to be announced later). Ongoing And remember, we will continue to collect pop tops at each monthly meeting until June 2014. These benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities. Collection boxes for the pop tops are available upon request.

HAVE YOU CONSIDERED? - LESHA

Lesha Van Buren, CAP has been a vital part of the Roanoke Chapter since 2008. She has served as chair of the Community Service Committee for 2 years and has been on the Dinner Reservation committee, as well as being Secretary for one year and

Treasurer for two years, and now is Vice President. Lesha is the person who can be relied on to get a job done. However, most people don’t know just how much work she does for the chapter. When she was on community service, Lesha was the one who picked up, gathered, stored and delivered all of those project items. She even did this for extra years to help the committee out. She did a wonderful job as Treasurer with a commendation letter from Finance Committee as to the terrific job she did. She always donates to every cause we have, and works tirelessly on any project. Lesha truly keeps us all laughing all the while!

But this year, Lesha has gone over and above in her duties. In addition to keeping up with the newest members, along with all the other members and their renewals, she is keeping the Visas for the Member of Excellence. She has redesigned the chapter brochure around the new logo. She has created a chapter information booklet to give to new members. Just tell her what you have in mind and Lesha makes it happen! All of this speaks to the fact the Lesha is dedicated to IAAP all the way. Thank you Lesha for your service to the Roanoke Chapter and VA-WV Division IAAP.

IAAP, Leadership, Service, & Christmas Spirit – All Bundled In One Gift Package by Susan Shively, CAP-OM Now that I’ve been a member of the Roanoke chapter of IAAP for two years, I realize just how important and valuable this organization is. It takes time to make new acquaintances and form new friendships. I’ve bonded and created a network of professionals, and obtained contact information of a variety of experts and authorities who are great resources. I’m so thankful to be associated with “the cream of the crop” professionals, not to mention the fun I’ve had traveling with some of my fave IAAP peeps. So, what makes us so special? How do we reach the professionalism level that separates us from other admins? I recently received an article from Ron Culberson, MSW, CSP, entitled, “Leadership as a Service Rather Than a Destination.” I’m sure you all have heard of “servant leadership.” We tend to think a servant is viewed as less prestigious than a President, Director, or Manager. Many times the word servant is not associated with being a great leader. However, the author goes on to say “shouldn’t all leadership be focused on service?”

Servant leadership means “every decision, every action, and every comment should reflect this question: How Can I Help?” Build up our organization and each other by asking yourself this question concerning our IAAP chapter, and your professional and personal life. I Peter 4:10 says, “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms.” A modest style of leadership is much more effective, and one leadership trait that can set IAAP members apart. A gift of service helps others succeed, ourselves succeed, and gives sense of self-satisfaction. The spirit of giving and serving is a great way to start off the Christmas season.

DO YOU HAVE A DISCARDED CELLULAR TELEPHONE, I-PAD or I-POD? WHY NOT DONATE IT! So you've upgraded your cellular phone contract and don't know what to do with the old phone. Or you have an outdated or damaged iPad or iPod stashed in a drawer? Rather than throwing it away, put it to use for Turning Point Shelter of the Salvation Army, a shelter for abused women and their children in the Roanoke Valley. Our chapter has been working with Shelter Alliance in Miramar, Florida to conduct this community service project for a number of years. Shelter Alliance is a program of GRC Wireless Recycling, the largest cell phone recycling network in North America. All proceeds from the recycled phones, iPads, and iPods are sent to Turning Point Shelter. Our organization has contributed over $2,300 to Turning Point since beginning the project in 2004! Tell your family, friends, and co-workers about this project and ask for their discarded cell phones, iPads and iPods. Donations may be dropped off at any Valley Bank branch, at the City of Salem Utility Collections Department located in Salem City Hall, at the Salem Public Library, or you may turn phones in to Judy Hough CAP-OM at a Membership meeting. All donations are a tax-deductible donation to our organization, and a tax donation form is available for those requesting one. If you have any questions, contact Judy at 540-491-3246.

Merry Christmas

AND HAPPY NEW YEAR
