STATEMENT BY THE SENIOR HIGH TECHNICAL SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF THE FUTURE WE WANT AS A NATION Mr. Chairman, Distinguished guests, members of the National Development Planning Commission, fellow participants, ladies and gentlemen. Eleanor Roosevelt said, “The future belongs to those whose believe in the beauty of their dreams” and as the adage goes, “not all fingers are equal.” I therefore deem it a great honour to present to you the future we want as a nation from the perspective those who have been denied the right to hear, see, move and speak freely. My name is Adjei Joseph Osei and I speak on behalf of the Senior High Technical School for the Deaf.
In the first place, Mr. Chairman, Sir Winston Churchill said in a famous quotation that, “Upon the education of the people, the fate of the nation rests.” It is our desire that in the near future, basic education will be free and compulsory for all. There are many deaf, blind and lame children who have been left at home. We also hope that good quality education will be accessible to all, including the less endowed. This will help sharpen everybody’s talents, skills and capabilities to enable all of us to become useful assets to the nation. Secondly Mr. Chairman, ladies and gentlemen, we look ahead to a nation with a buoyant economy not in words or in figures but one which ensures that employment opportunities will be open to all. By this means, every citizen, including the disabled, will be able to earn a decent living rather than becoming beggars and social misfits and contribute their quota towards national development. In addition Mr. Chairman, we look ahead to a nation devoid of all sorts of conflict, ethnocentrism, corruption, bribery and discrimination. We hunger and thirst for a tomorrow where the rights of both the majority and the minority, particularly, the less endowed, as enshrined in our Constitution are fully implemented and entrenched and access to the relevant information to do so is made accessible to all. Mr. Chairman, ladies and gentlemen, I hope all the points raised will be given due attention. Thank you.
