Volunteer of the Year Award!
Volunteer of the Year – cont.
Congratulations to David Winsness for receiving the City of Milton Parks and Rec Volunteer of the Year award. This award was presented to David on March 29th at a luncheon at City Hall. City Parks and Rec director Jim Cregge said of David, "this award is really for his YEARS and years of volunteer service to the Eagle Stix program. Hundreds of girls and their families have been blessed by such an incredible program." Coach Godby said of David, "This honor is well deserved. I remember David was the first parent who volunteered to coach a youth team in 2007 when we were looking for volunteers to help coach at the rec level for Alpharetta Parks and Rec. He knew nothing about the game other than watching his older daughter play at the Rec level. David was a quick learner and since then has been the main contributing factor to the growth of youth lacrosse in Milton.
David would always be willing to coach the girls who nobody else would coach because they were either inexperienced or did not have the talent that some other players had. Some of these players he coached as beginners went on to receive scholarships to play in college. Throughout the years, David has worked hard to get more field space for girls to play. This has resulted in Eagle Stix becoming the girl’s lacrosse provider for the city of Milton. As a result of David's time and effort, the girls in our community now have safe and adequate fields to play in our community. The sport has continued to grow and we now have a program for girls as young as pre-K to play in. The Eagle Stix program will continue to thrive as a great environment and opportunity for girls in our community to play lacrosse, due to the time and efforts of David Winsness."
David adopted the philosophy that all players who wanted to play would be able to, no matter their talent level or number of players registered to play. David helped grow the sport by encouraging neighbors and friends to get their daughters involved.

What Does our Winner Have to Say? David’s response: There are many more deserving of the volunteer award within Eagle Six as we have had so many contributing to the program’s success. Over the short nine-year history of the program we’ve had participation from more than 80 coaches and 500 youth athletes. This award serves to recognize the efforts of all coaches, athletes, team moms/dads, field maintenance/painting volunteers, referees, Fulton County Board of Ed, Host School & Faculty and The City of Milton Officials whose relentless efforts have enabled this program to evolve to what it is today. Thank you to the City of Milton for your valued assistance and recognition.
Eagle Stix has started its first PreK/K program this season. We have 11 girls in PreK/K participating. This program a great way to introduce the girls to the game of lacrosse in a fun and positive learning environment. Thanks to Rachel Cosman for volunteering to coach the girls in this inaugural season. Also thanks to 8th grade lacrosse players for helping coach: Courtney Canouse, Savannah Cosman, and Mary Grace Coyle. Coach Godby said of the PreK/K program, "it is awesome to see these young girls out here playing and having fun. Coach Rachel and the girls coaching are doing an outstanding job with the girls. It's so good to see these young girls having an opportunity to play this great game and have fun at such a young age. Having these 8th graders out here to work with the girls makes it an enjoyable learning experience because they provide passion and enthusiasm."
