GABBING WITH GODBY Tournament Level of Play I had the opportunity to sit down and talk with Coach Godby about the level of play our teams have played this summer. Here are the results of my interview: Are you pleased with how the Eagle Stix teams have played in tournaments this summer? I am beyond pleased with how our teams have played this summer. We had the best high school and middle school teams at the SAT which is the largest Southern tournament of the year. Our 2015 and 2019 Blue teams won the Elite divisions. Our 2019 Grey made it to the semi-finals in middle school Elite and our 2020 made it to the semi-finals in the regional tournament. Our 2018 Blue team won the US Lacrosse Southeast Regional tournament. Our 2015, 2016, and 2017 teams played great at Champions Cup with a total record of 9 - 4. At the Chattanooga challenge, our 2019 team won the U15 tournament playing against HS age players and our 2020 team won the U13 tournament, also playing against older players. Our MS Regional team made it to the finals and lost on a technicality.

Our 2017 team finished in the top 8 at the U15 Championship and our 2018 team finished in the top 16. How are Eagle Stix Elite teams scheduled in tournaments? We enter our Elite teams at the highest level of competition in tournaments. There are several reasons why we do that. One reason is we want to play against the best teams we can because we want to learn how to improve individually and as a team to compete against top level competition. If we play at a level that we can win easily or win most of our games, we don't have our weaknesses exposed. Why do Eagle Stix teams travel to VA and Baltimore to play in tournaments when there are tournaments closer to home? We travel to these tournaments because the competition is the best in the country. Our top Elite teams have won at every level in every Southern tournament that we have competed at for the past 4 years. It is great for us to compete in the southern tournaments because it is fun to win and have success. Then, as I mentioned previously, we like to play in Northern tournaments to play the best to continue to improve individually and as teams. How successful have Eagle Stix teams been against top level competition? We've been very successful. We will win some games and lose some games and it's different for different teams at different tournaments. Our 2017 team went 5 - 0 at the IWLCA Champions Cup. Overall, our teams went 9 - 4 at Champions Cup. Even the games we lost, they were close games down to the end. Our goal is to be as competitive as we can.

GABBING WITH GODBY … cont. Is it important for recruiting purposes to play at the top level? Yes it definitely helps. The college programs want to watch the best teams playing and they want to see how the athletes they're recruiting compete against the best in the country. One of the best compliments our program has received was from Coach Levy of the 2013 NCAA Champs UNC. She approached me at a recruiting tournament last fall to compliment me on how well our teams were competing. She had been keeping up with the results of our games and was very impressed that a southern team was able to compete with the best teams in the country.

Do a lot of college coaches watch Eagle Stix teams? Absolutely! We have about 15 - 20 coaches on the sidelines every half and then a new 15 - 20 coaches show up for the second half. The first games at Champions Cup, parents told me we had over 50 at the 2016 and 2017 games. We handed out over 50 rosters of our teams. These are coaches from all different levels and we also have coaches from the top 20 schools watching us at every game because they know we have talent.

Where do you see the level of play for Eagle Stix teams going in the future? Our level of play will continue to improve. We have gotten better each of the past 3 years since we started competing at the national tournaments. We are getting better talent in our program each year and getting the girls playing at a high level in middle school so they will improve throughout high school.

IT’S FALL Y’ALL!!

Summer ends, and Autumn comes, and he who would have it otherwise would have high tide always and a full moon every night; and thus he would never know the rhythms that are at the heart of life. ~Hal Borland
