U15 National Championship The Eagle Stix team was all set to make a good showing at the U15 Championship tournament this season, after going 0 – 5 and winless in 2012. “We were excited about the opportunity to play in a venue like ESPN Wide World of Sports against the top teams in the country” said Coach Godby. “We knew we were going to have to play well to be able to compete in this event. We were placed in one of the toughest pools of the tournament and our team had not played together as a unit all summer because we had a mixture of 2016’s and 2017’s.” Eagle Stix was placed in a pool against teams that included: Ultimate Elite (runner up in the Northeast tournament), Long Island Top Guns, who ended up winning the tournament, and an All-Star team from Colorado. Eagle Stix ended up 1-2 in pool play, with one game being a 1-goal loss to Ultimate Elite. This put Eagle Stix in a tough position going into the playoff round, by being seeded 23 out of 32 teams. Eagle Stix had to face the #9 seeded Lax Maniax in the opening round, who went undefeated in pool play. “We had our work cut out for us, but knew we were good enough to win if we played well. We had 3 games under our belt as a unit and felt good about our chances going into the game”, said Godby. Eagle Stix came out firing against Lax Maniax and built a 5 goal lead going into halftime. Eagle Stix continued rolling in the second half by extending the lead to 10 goals late in the game and the #23 seeded team from GA upset the #9 seed from FL by a final score of 13 – 5.

U15 cont … With the win over Lax Maniax, Eagle Stix advanced to the second round of the tournament, which is the first time any team from GA had advanced. Unfortunately Eagle Stix did not advance any further and was defeated by Yellow Jackets Gold in round 2 by a score of 10 – 7. “We just could not get going in this game.” Said Coach Godby. “We had a couple of goals taken away from us early in the game by foul calls, we had trouble getting possession on the circle, and just couldn’t get anything going. Eagle Stix made a late rally in the game, scoring 3 goals in the final 2 minutes, but it wasn’t enough. “Overall it was a great experience for us” said Godby. “We played 6 games against the top U15 teams in the country. We had college coaches from top 10 and top 20 programs, literally standing on our sidelines watching our games and they were really impressed with our players and program. We made a statement this weekend and showed that we can play and compete with the top programs in the country.” On another positive note, Eagle Stix won the competition for the best uniforms for the second consecutive year at the U15 Championships.

WHAT MOTIVATES A WINNER… Coach John Raba, Wesleyan University

A winner displays characteristics that set him apart from all others. A winner always wants to be the best that he can be. A winner is never satisfied with his performance. He is committed to preparing and open to change, and always wants to succeed, whether it’s a high GPA or a better athletic performance. A winner learns from his failures and he never makes excuses. A winner always looks for ways to improve his performance and to add value to the team. A winner always expects to be victorious. A winner is not afraid of risk.
