Article 12 PLAYGROUND MODERNIZATION SUDBURY FACILITIES SUDBURY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
The Goal • Provide safe and accessible playgrounds for ALL SPS students and Sudbury residents • Modernize playgrounds to meet current codes and regulations for accessibility (ie: ADA Title II, MA Architectural Access Board) • Renovate and modernize all elementary playgrounds over the next 2-3 years • Article 12 represents Phase One of a Multi-Year Plan
Background • Ongoing maintenance • May 2017 TM request for funds to provide necessary repairs • Additions to playgrounds through PTO donations have been required to meet ADA regulations in effect at time of donation in order to be approved by SPS School Committee • Coordinated, Collaborative effort to plan for modernization of SPS playgrounds to address accessibility and safety • Town and SPS • Community/Parent
The Need -Why Now? • Despite consistent and ongoing maintenance, SPS playground equipment is aging • Typical lifespan for playground equipment is 10-15 years • Many large structures are 16-20 years old
• Many of the older structures at SPS playgrounds do not meet the 2011 ADA regulations for playground accessibility • Playground surfacing does not meet current code requirements

FY18 PLAN • Haynes Playground – Phase I • Work to be initiated Summer 2018
Haynes Playground
Funding • $275,000 from Free Cash Includes: • New play structure in Area 4 (current over 15 years old and no longer ADA compliant) • Poured in place surfacing (replacing wood chips) • Hardscapes • Installation • Preservation of newer existing play structures: • Wave Climber, Spinner, Jumper, Monkey Bars, Buddy Benches, Tables
Funding (cont.) • We will actively seek Grant opportunities for this multiyear project • No School District Operating Fund monies to be used • No new taxes to support this Article • Strong community support for playground modernization through PlaySudbury established by resident Jean Nam • Future cost savings due to new surfacing and discontinued need for mulch replacement

The Playground Improvements Project is a long term project to enhance the accessibility and social emotional learning opportunities to all students in the Sudbury District.

Over the course of several years each of the four elementary school’s playgrounds would have improved surfacing and additional pieces of equipment that are ADA accessible in order to promote access to all children.
•
In addition, some pieces will be replaced due to wear. Some playgrounds may need surfacing and small additions while others will require a larger plan.
•
Tonight's request is for $25,000 to do immediate repairs this summer.
