Sustainable Maryland Application Natural Resources Innovative Demonstration Projects Tree Inventory

The City of Hyattsville has been maintaining an internal tree inventory over the course of the past year. It is currently 2/3 complete. By creating this inventory, the City utilized our Geospatial Information System (GIS) technology in order to track all trees within the public right-of-way for the entire City. Each tree has been given a unique identification number and its located geocoded into the database. Once the tree and its location have been created, the City can track the health and needs of the tree. The inventory can aid in the management and maintenance of trees, as all work done to the tree in prior years can be recorded. It is also used to provide residents with information about a tree they may have concerns about. Additionally, the inventory can come in handy during emergency situations. If a tree were to fall down in a storm, for example, the City can use our inventory to find out how old the tree was and its level of health. The inventory is a joint effort by the City arborist, Dawn Taft, and the City’s GIS Technician, Sandra Fuentes.
