Sustainable Maryland Application Planning & Land Use Innovative Demonstration Projects Shuttle UM Partnership

Points Requested: 10

In an attempt to get Hyattsville residents out of their cars and onto public transportation, the City has entered into an agreement with the University of Maryland (UMD) where Hyattsville residents may use the university’s bus service, Shuttle UM, free of charge. UMD operates a variety of bus services, including the 113 bus, which goes from the university down Adelphi Road and into the Prince George’s Plaza area before coming up Baltimore Avenue and returning to the University. The service is usually reserved for students and faculty/staff, however Hyattsville has negotiated an agreement where residents may register for the program at the City Municipal Building and be issued a pass allowing them ridership on Shuttle UM buses. The partnership has proven to be a low cost way to make more public transportation options available to City residents, therefore reducing the City’s carbon footprint and vehicle miles traveled.
