The Nest Challenge In the U.S., thermostats control approximately 50% of the average home’s energy consumption. A programmable thermostat can reduce a typical annual energy bill as much as 20%, yet just ten percent of thermostats are properly programmed to save energy. The challenge for this project was very simple. Nest wanted to change the way people think about home energy conservation by creating a user experience without equal in the thermostat industry. Nest had developed an extraordinarily compelling concentric graphical user interface and needed an Industrial Design that would preserve and enhance the purity of this vision. As designers, the challenge was to do justice to this vision with a compelling form factor, peerless usability, precise mechanical function and seamless technology integration.
Everything you need, in the box.
So you can get started saving energy right away, Nest put everything you need to install the thermostat in the box. Everything. By carefully thinking through the installation process, Nest foresaw possible obstacles and removed them. Very few installs will require anything that is not in the box. The elegant little screwdriver, wall trim plates, and custom wall screws make it so you can be up and running in less than twenty minutes.
Easy to install. Committed to a great user experience throughout, Nest addressed the installation process down to the last detail. Screwdrivers, screws, levels and wire terminals aren’t very glamorous; but they are part of the user experience. Therefore, Nest carefully addressed their form and function to make installation fast and stress-free.
Built-in level To help ensure perfect alignment, we integrated a level right into the backplate.
Nest custom screws Custom designed wall screws that don’t require any wall anchors.

A provided screwdriver means you can install your Nest right out of the box.
Press the lever, insert the wire and let go. Easier than holding a wire in place as you tighten a screw.
Easy to use. Nest was designed to be elegant, simple and intuitive Ring Turn it down when you’re hot, up when you’re cold. Press the ring for the menu. Display Turns blue when cooling and orange when heating. Turns off when you’re not there. Current temperature Shows the temperature in your home. Time to temperature Tells you how long it will take to reach your target temperature. Target temperature Displays the temperature you want to reach. The Nest leaf Appears when you’re saving energy.
Sensors Nest continually measures temperature, humidity, light, and activity.
Harmonizes with your home. Rather than impose on your decor, the Nest thermostat harmonizes. Its unique design makes it blend in with its surroundings. The head unit side wall has a slightly warm metallic finish under a transparent skin. While attractive on its own, the true function of this finish is to reflect the color of the surrounding wall. An orange wall means an orange thermostat. This is Nest’s chameleon effect. It helps Nest become part of your home.
Start saving now. By taking the humble thermostat to the next level, the Nest makes it easy to conserve energy and save money. It keeps you comfortable, while minimizing waste. Nest learns your preferences after a few days of use, becoming more efficient as time goes on. When no one is home, Nest’s built-in sensors figure out it is okay to turn off the heat or air conditioning. When you’re at home, it encourages you to conserve by displaying the Nest leaf when you make conservation minded energy choices. How much energy could we save if everyone’s thermostat was as smart and delightful to use as Nest?
