The Rescue Week 24, Devotion 1 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” John 14:26 Have you ever forgotten someone’s name? Maybe you were right in the middle of an introduction when disaster happened. “This is Stew.” “And Stew, this is . . . uhhhh . . . ” Embarrassing, right? It happens to the best of us. Read John 14:26. Can you imagine how the disciples must have felt when Jesus told them that He wanted them to make disciples, just like He had made them into disciples? “Wait! What? You want us to do what you did? I can’t even remember half of what you taught and I’m supposed to teach someone else?” I’m sure they were panicked. Remembering people’s names can be difficult, how much more difficult would it be to remember three years of Jesus’ teaching? The solution, though, is that Jesus promised His disciples (and us) the Holy Spirit. One of the jobs of the Holy Spirit is to help disciples remember the words of the Master. One of the great benefits to having the Holy Spirit living inside us is that He will bring to our minds truth we’ve learned about God. He will also continue to teach us. So, when you are struggling to understand, that is a great time to ask the Spirit to make it clear for you. Something to think about . . . Have you ever had the Holy Spirit help you remember a teaching of Jesus when you needed it? How is knowing that God will continue to teach you and remind you of His truth a source of comfort? Why do we need the Holy Spirit do help us learn and remember?
Week 24, Devotion 2 Check out this quote from Francis Chan. “If it’s true that the Spirit of God dwells in us and that our bodies are the Holy Spirit’s temple, then shouldn’t there be a huge difference between the person who has the Spirit of God living inside of him or her and the person who does not?” -Francis Chan, Forgotten God: Reversing Our Tragic Neglect of the Holy Spirit That’s a great question. Here are a couple more to help you process this quote. Something to Think About . . . What difference should the Holy Spirit living inside of us make in our everyday lives? How do you see the Holy Spirit at work in your own life? What difference is He making in you? Make an honest evaluation of your life today. Do you see outward actions that confirm the inward reality of the presence of God’s Spirit in your life?
Week 24, Devotion 3
In this week’s lesson we examined the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23. Remember, the fruit of the Spirit are characteristics or traits that the Spirit of God produces in the lives of believers. They are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Here is your mission today: Use your phone to document how you see these traits in action. You could take a picture of someone sharing as an example of kindness. You could take a picture of an older couple holding hands as an example of faithfulness. You could take a picture of verses that describe joy. Be creative! The key is to spend today looking for examples of the Holy Spirit at work around you.
