INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONALS BAHIA CHAPTER, NEWPORT BEACH, CALIFORNIA
SEPTEMBER 2013
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Now it’s time to settle down after such an exciting time at EFAM. That was great, and I am proud Bahia Chapter was well represented. The Professional Development & Networking meeting took place almost immediately after EFAM. Sheri Bagdonas and I attended it on Saturday, August 3. Wow . . . a lot of information to take away. Things are moving along with the Professional Development Day committee. Jane Meckley has developed a wonderful registration flier for the event to be held on October 5. I’m sure you may have already seen it. I didn’t know she could do that! But isn’t that always the way? Someone who generally is quiet surprises you with their talents. Print out a copy of the registration flier and take it to work or to friends. Currently Jane is looking into avenues for publicity for the event. I will be completing the program as soon as I receive more information. If any of you have ideas for publicity, or can supply things for the welcome bags, or know of an exhibitor/vendor, please let me know ASAP. The information will need to be included in the program. At our last meeting, Rachel French’s presentation on Debunking the Myth of Work/Life Balance was very well received. We need to keep her in mind as a speaker for PDD next year. This year, Orange Empire Chapter already has the speakers in place. If Bahia participates next year, our responsibility will be to enlist the speakers. The kids are back to school now; and I don’t know about you, but I’ve noticed a lot more traffic between my home and work. Ugh! I remember when our chapter gathered items for backpacks for the school children. That was fun. The California Division Meeting will be in Sacramento on June 6-8, 2014. That’s always a great event. It would be great if several of us could go. Like EFAM, it was fun to see several of our chapter members and friends. We would meet at times during the day to see what was next on everyone’s agenda. (Carolyn Garber was there and would pop up periodically to say hello.) For those of you who will be Members of Excellence this year, the new deadline is June 15 in order to help count for Bahia’s Chapter of Excellence. However, to be included in the CD awards, the deadline is April 30. You can still submit up until June 30 and be a Member of Excellence, but it will not count for the chapter. This year at EFAM, all of the proposed bylaw amendments were passed, both for IAAP and The Foundation. There is a summary on the News page of the CA Division website, www.iaap-ca.org. With the passing of Amendment #17, the $50 dues increase will take effect January 1, 2014. In order not to pay the extra $50, you can pay your dues before December 31 of this year. Until next month,
Beverly Lipscomb, CAP-OM

SEPTEMBER CHAPTER MEETING
SPEAKER’S CORNER
Bahia’s September presenter, Heather Kwon, is the Division Director for OfficeTeam in Irvine. She has over 10 years of staffing industry experience and has been recognized with numerous company awards for her professional accomplishments. Heather graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology. She enjoys working with clients and candidates to find solutions and opportunities that best fit their professional needs. Her presentation “How to Navigate Office Politics” reviews the common types of political players in the workplace; how to navigate office politics without compromising your career; and how each of us can lobby for a winning workplace. Politics are at play in virtually every organization, but how you handle sensitive workplace situations can make or break your professional prospects. Are office politics helping or harming your career? DINNER MENU New York Steak Salad ~Sliced Sirloin, Avocado, Red Onion, Tomato, Gorgonzola with Cabernet Wine Vinaigrette ~ Soup of the day/Warm rolls & butter Key Lime Pie Coffee, Tea, Iced Tea Vegetarian Option available by request when making reservation. Fellow Bahia Members, The speaker’s roster for the remainder of 2013 is filled. In keeping with the member survey completed in July, all topics scheduled meet one of the top five member selections. Each speaker is well qualified and well recommended. All presentations are eligible for recertification credit. 2014’s prospective speakers promise to be top notch as well. Please try to make it a monthly date to join us the second Thursday of each month. You will find it to be time well‐spent. ON ATTENDING MY FIRST “EFAM” IAAP NEWS How exciting—on the same day I was offered a job (after being unemployed for 15 months) I was called and told I was awarded a scholarship to IAAP’s 2013 EFAM. Since it was being held in my home county, Orange County, it would be financially feasible for me to attend. IAAP set up a wonderful system to keep attendees informed ahead of the actual convention—weekly emails entitled: EFAM Know Before You Go. These emails were chock full of great tips and insights for both first timers and longtime attendees. Additionally a couple of long time IAAP members emailed their Excel Spreadsheets for scheduling sessions and outfits (a must for those who have to pack ahead of time for the five day conference). Both of these guides helped to make my first EFAM virtually problem‐free. My first EFAM session was the brand new Leadership Boot camp lead by Susan Leahy, MA and assisted by Marie Herman. It was truly an interactive session—both physically and mentally. All the other sessions I was able to attend were mentally stimulating and most were pertinent to the workplace. Quite a few had very helpful downloads (the PowerPoint session for instance) and/or handouts. As wonderful as the educational sessions were though, nothing came close to networking with other IAAP members including my fellow Bahia members. For some of us, it was the first time being able to spend time together outside of a monthly chapter meeting—and boy was it fun. What a great group of ladies we have! We were all able to get together for dinner one night away from the Marriott and just kick back and relax. Too bad we’re all so busy; we barely have time to see each other once a month. I definitely recommend that every IAAP member attend at least one EFAM just to get an idea of what networking and educational opportunities are available to them. Although I may not be able to attend next year’s EFAM, I am planning on attending another one in the near future! Vee Molinari, CAP‐OM

Word Pair of the Month: than, then As is so often the case in English, one letter can make a big difference in the meanings of two similar words. With than and then, two words that are often mixed up, it’s the vowel that makes the difference. Than, with an a, is a conjunction that signals a comparison: That model is far more user friendly than this one is. Then, with an e, is an adverb that refers to time: Please finish those reports; then we can discuss next month’s conference. Here’s a tip for remembering the difference between these words. Then, which refers to time, rhymes with when, which also refers to time. Just say to yourself, “When? Then!” (It’s easier than looking the words up in the dictionary every time.)

ON OUR NEW LOGO
Leading Administrative Professionals
Since our beginnings as an association, those working in the administrative profession have turned to IAAP for guidance in an often turbulent, ever‐changing work environment. Throughout the years, the ways that IAAP helps its members and defines the profession have changed with the culture. Our new brand is a reflection of those changes. This new logo better communicates the centralized nature of our organization; that we are the “go to” association for our profession. The logo, along with the new tag line, encapsulates all that we are: The center of business and the center of a well‐functioning office. If you’re an established veteran looking for new skill sets and connections, new to the profession and looking for guidance, or anywhere in‐between, IAAP is there. IAAP—Leading Administrative Professionals.
