This week’s Utah hike

BY STEVE BAKER Clipper Staff Writer

Red Butte Canyon Overlook, Salt Lake County

Red Butte Canyon is a protected, near pristine canyon east of the University of Utah. You can’t hike into this canyon, but you can enjoy views looking down into it. The trail starts on Colorow Drive and north of the Huntsman building. On your way up, stay on the trail that crosses the Shoreline Trail to the other side. This trail takes you into Georges Hollow. The trail follows the south drainage for about 1/2 mile and heads for the ridge above Georges Hollow. Follow the ridge to the first trail split for “The Living Room,” a Salt Lake Valley overlook with Flintstone furniture. It’s worth a visit before you continue to the overlook. As you continue up, the trail opens near the ridgeline and you see a trail split, go left for Red Butte Canyon Overlook. The trail follows the ridge spine, as you search for the perfect lunch spot above the canyon. Enjoy your day! Overlook 6,593 ft.
