Transitshed Visualization - ECR BRT Friends of Caltrain / Peninsula Transportation Alternatives Adina Levin and Ian Rees
Bay Area challenges
● Transit service not well connected ● Historical disconnection between transit and land use planning ● Hard to explain and justify the value of improving connections
Transitshed visualization Watershed: the area that is drained by a riparian network Network includes tributaries, not just the main stream Transitshed: the area that is reachable by the transit network (in a given amount of time).
Transitshed The area from which a transit user can get to Palo Alto, at 8am Monday morning (includes walk time) Dark gray: within 45 minute travel time Light gray: within 90 minute travel time
Benefits of transitshed analysis Transitshed analysis can help answer important planning questions for transit and land use, such as: ● How much does an improvement in transit - frequency, speed, or connectivity - improve access to places ● How is access to jobs increased by improvements to transit service
El Camino Real BRT Scenario ● El Camino Real Bus Rapid Transit would greatly increase speed on corridor, is highest ridership route in County ● ECR travels East-West, but major employment centers are North (like Moffet Park in Sunnyvale) or South (Apple Campus). ● Key city council members and community members advocating for better North/South connections instead. ● Visualize how ECR BRT and North South Improvements project helps access to these job centers to the North and South ● How many commuters can reach key employment centers within a practical commute time
El Camino Real BRT Scenario Start at El Camino Real and Scott in Santa Clara 1)
2) 3)
With current service, can’t access Mountain View employment center in North Bayshore (Google HQ) N/S improvements alone don’t help much ECR BRT and North/South improvements provide best results.
El Camino Real BRT Scenario
El Camino and Scott ECR BRT and North/South improvements together provide job center access to over 300,000 more residents and 100,000 more jobs.
El Camino Real BRT Scenario Start at El Camino Real and Showers in Mountain View (densely populated neighborhood) ● ● ●
With current service, can’t access Apple in Cupertino N/S improvements alone don’t solve problem ECR BRT and North/South improvements provide best results.
El Camino Real BRT Scenario
El Camino and Showers ECR BRT and North/South improvements together provide access to ~100,000 more residents and ~50, 000 more jobs
Next steps ● Compare dedicated lanes with mixed flow option (less speed improvements) ● Update with final data from VTA ECR BRT Environmental Impact Report, to be published 10/29 ○ Ideally VTA would provide data for transit services being planned, so community developers/advocates can use data during the planning process ● Drag and drop starting point ● Heat Map showing clusters of jobs and homes ● Heat Map showing and future land use
Technologies and Data Powered by OpenTripPlanner and OpenStreetMap. GTFS data provided by: Caltrain, BART, SFMTA, VTA, SamTrans, AC Transit.
Tools and data sets Current scenario ● Powered by OpenTripPlanner and OpenStreetMap. ● Transit schedules: Muni, BART, Caltrain, VTA, SamTrans, ACTransit (future: publicly available shuttles, bikeshare) ● Transit change: improvements to travel time, frequency ● Population and Jobs
Tools and data sets For additional scenarios ● Workers and jobs by salary/income level ● Land use scenarios: additional jobs and residents in San Jose Urban Villages
