Happy 2012! We are off to a great start of the year here at the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. th

We just held our 6 Annual Dean’s Tailgate on January 21. Over 100 alumni and friends attended this family-fun event with food, drinks, and entertainment from Mason cheerleaders, the Green Machine, and the acapella group, GMUnit! Following the tailgate, the Patriots faced off against the Towson Tigers in a glorious victory, 72-60. We had a great turnout at this year’s tailgate, and I hope to see you all next year! I’m looking forward to three exciting upcoming events: Homecoming- Men’s Basketball vs. Old Dominion Saturday, February 4 at 5 p.m. We welcome back all of our alumni for Homecoming. Join students and alumni alike for a weekend filled with Patriot Pride. Visit the website to see festivities and times of all the weekend events. Renowned Mason Economist Tyler Cowen to Speak on the European Financial Crisis Tuesday, February 7 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. The Hub (SUB II), Ballroom The Interdisciplinary Center for Economic Science and the Department of Economics will host the second Economics Community Forum on Tuesday, February 7, at 7:30 p.m., featuring economics professor Tyler Cowen, and his presentation, “What Has Gone Wrong with Europe?” Presidential Budget Open Forum Wednesday, February 22 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Founder’s Hall, Room 113, Arlington Campus Mason’s Centers on the Public Service invite all for a lively panel discussion on President Obama’s budget recommendations for the upcoming fiscal year. Budget experts such as Robert Bixby, executive director of the Concord Coalition, and G. William Hoagland, former staff director of the Senate Budget Committee, will be on the panel. Vision Series Lecture "Before Toni Morrison and Alice Walker: The Forgotten Fiction of Ann Petry " Keith Clark, Associate Professor of English Monday, February 27 at 7 p.m. Concert Hall In a literary world dominated by such luminaries as Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison and Pulitzer Prize winner Edward P. Jones, novelist and short story writer Ann Petry remains an undervalued--if not wholly undiscovered--treasure of African American literature. This lecture will address how gender and the politics of literary expression account for her relative invisibility in African American/American literary studies. Click here to read more.

I am proud to announce that Kathleen Curtis, executive assistant to the dean in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, recently won a grant from the Patriot Green Fund. Curtis plans on using her $4,835 to place beehives strategically around the Fairfax campus to teach students how beehives operate and how they can play a significant role in sustainability. Pamela Gibbs, MPA ’86, was named first director of the Office of Minority and Women Inclusion by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Charniele Herring, BA economics ’93, has been appointed Democratic minority whip for the Virginia House of Delegates. Theresa Werner, BA communication ’96, was elected the 105th president of the National Press Club.
