Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls Flood Defence Scheme

Update July 2016 Construction begins! Following the grant of planning permission we are pleased to announce that construction will start in August 2016 and you will start to see preparations begin around Shoreham. After a competitive tendering process, the Environment Agency has employed the services of contractors Team Van Oord to carry out construction of this ambitious project.

Why does Shoreham-by-Sea need new flood defences? The town of Shoreham-by-Sea is vulnerable to tidal flooding from the River Adur. The risk of flooding will increase over time as climate change leads to sea level rise and rainfall events become more frequent. The improved flood defences will provide better protection from tidal flooding to properties and businesses on both the east and west banks of the River Adur. Where are the works taking place?

We know that construction activities can be disruptive but we are working to minimise these impacts and our priority is to keep everyone safe and well informed.

The Scheme will cover both banks of the River Adur in Shoreham; the west bank from Shoreham Fort to the A27 and the east bank from Coronation Green to the A27. As there are different types of defences along the river, we have split the scheme area into a number of sections, or ‘reaches’ to simplify the works. A map of the reaches is provided overleaf. Would you like to find out more about the project? Our website will have all the latest updates and there will also be a visitor centre shortly at

What is the construction timeline? You will notice increasing activity around Shoreham in August. This will include setting up site compounds, works to protect wildlife, vegetation strimming, and other pre-construction works. The next stage will be to start work on the new flood defences in reaches W3, W4 and the southern end of E3. We will regularly update our website and as we get nearer to beginning each future reach we will communicate directly with those specific communities. As with many major construction projects we expect that the programme will be subject to change. Many factors including weather, wildlife and other unforeseen factors can impact the timeline.
