1 VISION STATEMENT BY ACCRA ACADEMY BOYS’ SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Delivered by Apenteng Bismark Date: 26th November 2015 Venue: Mensvic Hotel, Accra -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Good morning Mr. Chairman, Dignitaries, Peers, All other protocols observed; According to the President of the African Development Bank, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, “Africa has no business with poverty so simply we end it. There is no other thing more important than that.” However, sub-Saharan Africa remains the least developed region of the world and 80.5 percent of sub-Saharan Africans live on less than US$2.55 a day. According to the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Naana Jane Opoku Agyeman, who is now the Minister of Education, “in order to end poverty, quality and relevant education must be delivered in the right medium. The solution to our problem has been provided and made open. To ensure any form of sustained national development, careful restructuring of our modes of education should be undertaken.” There should be the introduction of culture-based programmes in our syllabus across all levels of education, with heavy emphasis on educating our people on the cultural heritage and values of Ghana and therefore imbibing the pride of identifying as Ghanaian. This will go a long way towards defeating the inferiority complex that continues to haunt us several years after the end of colonial rule. In this way, the now mentally liberated citizen can strive for any form of development without any self-imposed mental barrier. Furthermore, education is the major road to national development. But education in Ghana is dormant and therefore has hindered national growth. The inability of our educational system to graduate from a grammar-based system to more practical system has murdered Ghana. Education in Ghana is fixated on rote learning. Students are taught to imbibe whatsoever is given to them. So for Ghana to have national development, some courses such as life skills must be brought into the system. 2 since every student will be better placed to start establishing their own business right after school. In addition, a proper examination system should be adopted to promote national development. This would help us accurately evaluate the true performance of students thereby the right people to be employed in the right institutions. Additionally, failing any examination should not be made a stumbling block in the development of a person. Vocational training for instance can be initiated for such persons. Article 25 (1) of the 1992 Constitution presents the educational rights of Ghanaians. These rights must be enforced such that equal educational opportunities are granted to all persons. With a view to accomplishing this, basic education should be free, compulsory and available to all; secondary education should be made generally available to all; higher education should be equally accessible to all. Schools under trees are not the best environment for study. People are not interested in attending school when there is no proper infrastructure. Therefore, to make education alluring, the government must provide infrastructure in all the regions. Learning materials and trained teachers must be available to ensure quality education. Parents must also not infringe upon their wards’ rights. They should rather enable them to freely enjoy their educational rights. All future educational improvement mechanisms should by no means overlook the disabled. People with disabilities are of greater worth than begging for alms. Education is the sure way to achieve their potential. More institutions geared towards providing persons with disabilities with skills should be established and well equipped. Finally, all forms of education should be made GENERALLY ACCESSIBLE TO DISABLED PERSONS. Thank you.
