The Series: The Vulcans and Huskies are meeting for the fourth in three years and the 21st time overall. Bloomsburg has won five of the last six meetings against Cal U, including a 24-17 win earlier this year.
THIS WEEK: California travels to Bloomsburg for a NCAA Quarterfinal contest this Saturday. Last week in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, both teams won home contests with the Vulcans cruising past Seton Hill, 48-7, and the Huskies edging West Chester, 28-21.

VULCANS THUMP SETON HILL, 48-7: Behind a stellar defensive performance and a record-setting quarterback, the No. 7 Vulcans cruised to a 48-7 win over Seton Hill. Quarterback Kevin McCabe set single-season school records for passing yards (2,859) and touchdown passes (28) in the victory. The Cal U defense allowed only 211 yards of total offense and registered five sacks against the Griffins. Seventh-year head coach John Luckhardt also earned sole possession of first place in school history with 56 career wins.

GAME NOTES BLOOMSBURG HEAD COACH: Danny Hale is in his 16th season as head coach of the Huskies and is the program’s all-time winningest coach with a 136-45-1 record. He has led Bloomsburg to 10 outright or shared PSAC East titles and six post-season appearances, including three trips to the NCAA Tournament in the last four years. Hale came to the Huskies after a five-year tenure as head coach at West Chester, where he was a two-sport star before graduating in 1968.

SCOUTING THE HUSKIES: Bloomsburg held at least a share of the PSAC East lead for the first nine weeks of the season before a loss to rival West Chester cost the Huskies the divisional title and a chance to play in the PSAC Championship game. The Huskies lead the conference and rank fourth in the nation at 268.17 rushing yards per game. Bloomsburg features a pair of talented ballcarriers in redshirt freshmen Derrick Price and Kenny Domzalski. The duo has combined to rush for over 2,000 yards this season. Senior linebacker Greg Myers, a first-year starter, leads the team with 67 tackles, while Academic All-American Jon Ochs anchors the defensive line with 44 stops (32 solo) and a team-high 16.5 tackles for loss (TFL) and 8.0 sacks this season.

WINNING WAYS: Cal U continues its stay among the nation’s elite programs, ranking No. 7 in the last regular season American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Coaches’ Poll. The Vulcans have won 24 of their last 26 games with their only losses being to Valdosta State in last year’s NCAA Semifinals and a 24-14 loss at Bloomsburg in Week 2 this season.

PLAYING THE BEST: This weekend marks the sixth game this season for Cal U that finished the regular season in the AFCA Top 25 Coaches’ Poll. The Vulcans hold a 4-1 mark against nationally-ranked teams this year. BEASTS OF THE PSAC EAST: The Vulcans will now have played both PSAC East perennial powerhouses Bloomsburg and West Chester twice this season. Over the last 15 months dating back to last season, Cal U holds a combined 4-1 mark against the two top teams in the PSAC Eastern Division. SEEING DOUBLE-DIGITS: Cal U earned its 11th win of the season in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last week, marking only the second time in school history that a team posted at least 10 wins in a year. The Vulcans first accomplished the feat last year en route to a school record 13 victories and an appearance in the NCAA Semifinals.
VULCANS SCORE OFTEN, QUICKLY: Cal U has put together 72 scoring drives this season (64 touchdowns, eight field goals) with an average drive taking six plays and covering 56 yards. The Vulcans have had 11 scoring drives that took less than 1:00, 17 drives that consumed less than 2:00 and 14 scoring drives that have taken less 3:00.

GAME NOTES DOUBLE VISION: Before this season not since the Reagan Administration had the Vulcans faced a team two times in one season. Now, Cal U will have played two opponents twice each in the same season (West Chester and Bloomsburg). The Vulcans last played an opponent twice in 1984, defeating Bloomsburg twice after posting a 21-14 victory in the “State Game.” However, prior to that contest the last time Cal U faced a team twice in one year was in 1921 when President Woodrow Wilson was in the White House. The Vulcans are traveling to Bloomsburg in the NCAA Super Regional One Championship and NCAA Quarterfinals.

McRECORD: Quarterback Kevin McCabe continues to rewrite the school record in his first season with the program. The former Pine-Richland standout set the singleseason school record for passing yards with 2,859 to break the 18-year old mark set by Sam Mannery. He has also thrown 28 touchdown passes, eclipsing the mark of 25 set last season by Joe Ruggiero. A Harlon Hill candidate, McCabe is also within reach of breaking the single-season mark for completions that was set in 1984.

PILING UP THE YARDS: Behind one of the most balanced offenses in the country and the nation, the Vulcans have eclipsed single-season school records for passing, total offense and all-purpose yards. Offensive coordinator Mike Kellar has directed an offense that ranks No. 14 in the country with 449.08 yards per game (5,389), breaking last year’s school record of 5,292 set in 14 games. Cal U also ranks No. 12 in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 38.67 points per game. The Vulcans have scored 464 points in 12 games this year, just 38 points shy of the record set last season.
Single-Season Points
WELCOME ADDITION: Wide receiver Marcel Pestano continues to rank among the nation’s top playmakers and is fast approaching two single-school records that have stood for 25 years. He is nearing the single-season marks for receiving yards and receptions set by All-American Perry Kemp in 1983 before he played five seasons in the NFL. Pestano has posted four 100-yard games this season and scored a touchdown in eight contests, including four multi-touchdown games. SOMETHING SPECIAL: The Vulcans feature one of the top special teams unit in not only the PSAC, but also the country. Cal U ranks second in the nation with in kickoff returns, averaging 27.36 yards per return. Junior running back Freddie Bacco and junior Terrence Johnson have each returned a kickoff for a touchdown this season. Graduate student punter Derek Fiorenza and the punt coverage team has Cal U ranked No. 5 in the country in net punting at 37.11 yards per punt. SPREADING THE WEALTH: The Cal U offense features one of the deepest group of skilled players in the region. The Vulcans have completed passes to 15 different players and touchdown passes to seven different players in 2008. FLIGHTS CANCELLED: Aided by an improving pass rush and three starters in the secondary returning from last season, the Vulcans are ranked No. 19 in the nation in pass defense and No. 14 in pass efficiency defense. Cal U is allowing only 164.92 passing yards per game with opponents passing for 150-plus yards in only six of 12 games. Junior cornerback Terrence Johnson ranks tied for second in the conference with five interceptions this year, while as a team the Vulcans are also second in the PSAC with 14 interceptions by eight different players.

CALIFORNIA – In the season-opener, the No. 5 Vulcans featured an explosive offense led by quarterback Kevin McCabe and receiver Marcel Pestano en route to a 44-32 victory over No. 16 West Chester. The win extends the Vulcans’ regular-season win streak to 12 games. McCabe completed 30-of-36 attempts for 297 yards with two touchdowns – both to Pestano, who posted 11 catches for 112 yards. Cal amassed a total of 517 yards of total offense against West Chester, including 220 yards on the ground. Senior running back Daine Williams led all players with 102 yards on 17 carries with two touchdowns. With the Golden Rams leading 19-16 at halftime, the Vulcans seized control of the contest in the second half by scoring 21-straight points in the third quarter with three touchdowns. The Golden Rams trimmed the deficit to 37-25 with a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, however, the Vulcans sealed the victory with a seven-yard score by senior Brandon Lombardy with 8:13 left in the game to increase the lead to 44-25. Senior Juan Butler paced the Cal U defense with seven tackles (six solo). As a team, the Vulcans held the Golden Rams to only 71 rushing yards and forced three turnovers, including two interceptions. BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 6) – After trailing by 14 points at halftime against No. 18 Bloomsburg, the Vulcans rallied to tie the contest at 14-14 before the Huskies scored 10-straight points en route to a 24-17 victory at Redman Stadium. The loss snaps a 12-game regular season winning streak by Cal U. With the constant rainfall due to the path of Tropical Storm Hanna, the play selection for both teams was shifted to the running game. Bloomsburg amassed 325 yards and two touchdowns on 55 carries. Meanwhile, Cal used its trio of running backs to finish the game with 196 rushing yards and one touchdown on 41 attempts. Senior running back Daine Williams paced the Vulcans’ ground game with 90 yards on 17 attempts. The Huskies took a 14-0 lead into halftime after rushing for 220 yards on 31 carries in the opening two quarters. However, the Vulcans answered from a halftime deficit with an impressive third quarter by scoring touchdowns on a 49-yard completion from quarterback Kevin McCabe to wide receiver Marcel Pestano and a 38-yard run by sophomore Windell Brown. Bloomsburg responded with a 35-yard field goal before the Huskies returned a McCabe interception 52 yards to claim a 24-14 lead with only eight second left in the third quarter. The Vulcans were in position to score on their final possession of the game, but were unable to convert fourth-and-15 from the Huskies’ 33-yard line in the final minutes of the game. CALIFORNIA (Sept. 13) – The No. 16 Vulcans featured six different players that scored touchdowns in a 54-0 victory against Lake Erie. As a team, the Vulcans rushed for 347 yards and five touchdowns on 39 attempts against the Storm. Junior running back Freddie Bacco led all players with a career-high 143 yards and one touchdown on 11 attempts. Senior Brandon Lombardy rushed for 76 yards and a pair of touchdowns on six carries. He became just the third player in school history to rush for 3,000-plus yards in a career (3,019). Already leading 14-0, senior Marcel Pestano capped the scoring in the first quarter with a 45-yard punt return for a touchdown. His punt return for a touchdown was the first by a Vulcan since Marc Huddleston returned a punt for a score at Mansfield in 2005 (Sept. 10). Pestano also received one of two touchdown passes by graduate student Kevin McCabe, who completed 11-of-15 attempts for 177 yards with no interceptions while playing just the first half. In addition to the high-scoring offense, the Vulcans were dominant on defense in the first half, allowing Lake Erie to collect only three first downs and 24 yards of total offense. Junior linebacker Matt McClellan led the Vulcans’ defense with seven tackles, 2.0 TFL and 1.5 sacks, while junior defensive lineman Willie Walker registered a team-best 2.0 sacks in the contest.
EDINBORO, Pa. (Sept. 20) – The No. 14 Vulcans scored the eventual game-winning touchdown with 4:54 left in the fourth quarter before the defense forced a three-and-out, as the Cal U team edged No. 23 Edinboro, 35-31, at Sox Harrison Stadium in front of over 7,000 fans. Sophomore Windell Brown gave the Vulcans the lead late in the fourth on a four-yard touchdown with 4:54 remaining in the game. After starting the ensuing drive deep in its own territory, Edinboro was forced to punt with 3:20 left in the game. Cal U then collected two first downs before running out the clock. Senior running back Daine Williams led the ground game for Cal U with 140 rushing yards on 17 attempts, while quarterback Kevin McCabe finished the game with 274 passing yards on 18-of-31 attempts with two touchdowns and an interception. After the Vulcans held a 21-3 lead early in the second quarter, the Fighting Scots managed to trim the deficit to 21-17 at halftime. Edinboro claimed its first lead of the game in the opening minutes of the third quarter before Cal U seized control of the game on the Fighting Scots next possession when junior Terrance Johnson recovered a fumble at the Edinboro 29-yard line. Using the short field, Cal regained the lead at 28-24 when McCabe found junior A.J. Jackson for a score. Senior linebacker Jake Howell led the Vulcans with nine tackles (six solo), while fellow linebacker Brent Whiteleather added seven tackles.

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 27) – No. 14 Cal U team managed to hold on to a third-quarter lead to claim a 21-19 victory over rival No. 12 Indiana at Adamson Stadium. The victory marks back-to-back wins by Cal U over IUP for the first time since the 1981-82 seasons. It also snapped a 27-year losing streak to the Crimson Hawks at California. The Vulcans took a 21-6 lead in the opening minutes of the third quarter when quarterback Kevin McCabe connected with fullback Shawn Johnson for a three-yard touchdown pass. IUP responded with a touchdown in both the third and fourth quarters before the Cal U defense stopped a Crimson Hawk two-point conversion attempt with 5:27 left in the game. Following the Crimson Hawks’ final touchdown, the Vulcans answered with an 11-play drive that covered the final five-plus minutes of the game. Cal U converted a crucial fourth-and-five play from the IUP 20-yard line with McCabe finding freshman wide receiver Josh Gumbert across the middle for a nine-yard gain. McCabe finished the game with 239 passing yards and three touchdowns on 20-of-35 attempts with no interceptions against an IUP defense that entered the game ranked No. 1 in total defense. The win by Cal U marks a personal milestone for seventh-year head coach John Luckhardt, who became just the third coach in school history to total 50 career wins. CALIFORNIA (Oct. 11) – Behind five touchdown passes from Kevin McCabe, including three scores to wide receiver Marcel Pestano, No. 8 Cal U cruised to a 56-3 Homecoming victory against Lock Haven. McCabe threw for a season-high 310 yards on 19-of-26 attempts with five touchdowns and no interceptions. Pestano finished the game with six receptions for a season-best 150 yards and three touchdowns. The Cal U offense scored touchdowns on eight of its 11 total possessions in the contest jumping out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter behind a pair of McCabe-to-Pestano touchdowns (36, 12 yards). In the opening seconds of the second quarter, McCabe connected with junior A.J. Jackson for a 16-yard score. The two teams then exchanged field goals in the remainder of the quarter before the Vulcans took a 22-3 lead into halftime. CALIFORNIA (Oct. 25) - No. 6 Cal U earned at least a share of its fourth-straight PSAC West title with a 31-10 victory over Slippery Rock. After a sluggish first quarter in which Slippery Rock held a 10-3 lead, Cal U claimed control of the game with three touchdowns in the second quarter. Senior running back Daine Williams gave the Vulcans a 10-7 lead with 12:00 minutes left before halftime. Williams finished the game with 99 yards and a career-high three touchdowns on 25 attempts. Williams scored another touchdown on the next Cal U possession before the Vulcans increased their lead to 24-7 with a 41-yard scoring scamper by sophomore Windell Brown. Williams scored his final touchdown with 2:45 left in the third quarter which concluded a 15-play, 92-yard drive for the Vulcans, who finished with a 21-plus minute advantage in time of possession. The Cal U defense posted one of its best performances of the season in the second half, allowing only 54 yards on 21 plays and forcing two turnovers in the final two quarters. Following the final Williams’ touchdown in the third quarter, senior free safety Juan Butler forced a fumble on a third-and-two play with the fumble being recovered by junior outside linebacker Matt McClellan. Butler then halted a Rock drive in the fourth quarter with his second interception of the season. ERIE, Pa. (Nov. 1) – No. 7 Cal U earned sole possession of the PSAC West title and a berth in the PSAC Championship game with a 17-6 victory over Mercyhurst College at Tullio Field. The Vulcans finished divisional play with a perfect 7-0 mark and will make their first appearance in the “State Game” since 1984. Cal U jumped out to a 17-0 halftime lead before the defense sealed the victory with a pair of second-half interceptions, including an interception in the end zone by outside linebacker Matt McClellan. The Vulcans took an early 3-0 lead before the Cal U offense engineered a methodical 12-play, 96-yard drive capped with a one-yard touchdown run by senior running back Daine Williams. After the defense forced a three-and-out, Cal U expanded its lead to 17-0 with a 35-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kevin McCabe to junior receiver A.J. Jackson with 7:25 left before halftime. In the opening minutes of the of the third quarter, Cal U appeared ready to cruise to victory when junior cornerback Terrence Johnson returned an interception 36 yards. However, Johnson fumbled the ball and the loose ball was recovered by Mercyhurst at its own 2-yard line. The Lakers moved the ball 98 yards on 16 plays to cut the deficit to 17-6 with a one-yard quarterback sneak to cap a nine-plus minute drive. CALIFORNIA (Nov. 8) – The No. 7 Vulcans secured their position in the NCAA playoffs for a second-straight year with a 47-36 victory over No. 17 West Chester in the PSAC Championship Game. In the victory, graduate student quarterback Kevin McCabe set a single-game school record with 443 passing yards and tied the singleseason school record with 25 touchdown passes. He completed 25-of-34 attempts for 443 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. The Vulcans featured a pair of 100-yard receivers in graduate student Marcel Pestano and junior AJ Jackson. Pestano finished the game with 170 yards and three touchdowns on a game-high 11 catches, while Jackson set a career high with 193 receiving yards and a touchdown on six receptions (32.2 yards per catch). CALIFORNIA (Nov. 22) - Behind a stellar defensive performance and a quick-strike offense, the No. 7 Vulcans registered a 48-7 victory over Seton Hill in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Quarterback Kevin McCabe set a pair of single-season school records in the victory after passing for 253 yards and three touchdowns. The signal-caller set records for 2,859 passing yards and 28 touchdown passes. Against the Griffins, he completed 19-of-24 attempts (79.1 percent) with no interceptions. In the victory, wide receiver Marcel Pestano registered seven receptions for 140 yards and two touchdowns. He is the first receiver in recent program history to surpass the 1,000-yard mark in a season. With the victory, head coach John Luckhardt is in sole possession of first place in school history with 56 career wins. The Cal U defense limited Seton Hill to only 211 yards of total offense, almost 175 yards less than the season average. VULCANS THUMP SETON HILL, 48-7: Behind a stellar defensive performance and a record-setting quarterback, the No. 7 Vulcans cruised to a 48-7 win over Seton Hill. Quarterback Kevin McCabe set single-season school records for passing yards (2,859) and touchdown passes (28) in the victory. The Cal U defense allowed only 211 yards of total offense and registered five sacks against the Griffins. Seventh-year head coach John Luckhardt also earned sole possession of first place in school history with 56 career wins.

GAME NOTES BLOOMSBURG HEAD COACH: Danny Hale is in his 16th season as head coach of the Huskies and is the program’s all-time winningest coach with a 136-45-1 record. He has led Bloomsburg to 10 outright or shared PSAC East titles and six post-season appearances, including three trips to the NCAA Tournament in the last four years. Hale came to the Huskies after a five-year tenure as head coach at West Chester, where he was a two-sport star before graduating in 1968.

SCOUTING THE HUSKIES: Bloomsburg held at least a share of the PSAC East lead for the first nine weeks of the season before a loss to rival West Chester cost the Huskies the divisional title and a chance to play in the PSAC Championship game. The Huskies lead the conference and rank fourth in the nation at 268.17 rushing yards per game. Bloomsburg features a pair of talented ballcarriers in redshirt freshmen Derrick Price and Kenny Domzalski. The duo has combined to rush for over 2,000 yards this season. PLAYING THE BEST: This weekend marks the sixth game this season for Cal U that finished the regular season in the AFCA Top 25 Coaches’ Poll. The Vulcans hold a 4-1 mark against nationally-ranked teams this year. BEASTS OF THE PSAC EAST: The Vulcans will now have played both PSAC East perennial powerhouses Bloomsburg and West Chester twice this season. Over the last 15 months dating back to last season, Cal U holds a combined 4-1 mark against the two top teams in the PSAC Eastern Division. SEEING DOUBLE-DIGITS: Cal U earned its 11th win of the season in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last week, marking only the second time in school history that a team posted at least 10 wins in a year. The Vulcans first accomplished the feat last year en route to a school record 13 victories and an appearance in the NCAA Semifinals.
VULCANS SCORE OFTEN, QUICKLY: Cal U has put together 72 scoring drives this season (64 touchdowns, eight field goals) with an average drive taking six plays and covering 56 yards. GAME NOTES DOUBLE VISION: Before this season not since the Reagan Administration had the Vulcans faced a team two times in one season. Now, Cal U will have played two opponents twice each in the same season (West Chester and Bloomsburg). The Vulcans last played an opponent twice in 1984, defeating Bloomsburg twice after posting a 21-14 victory in the “State Game.” However, prior to that contest the last time Cal U faced a team twice in one year was in 1921 when President Woodrow Wilson was in the White House. McRECORD: Quarterback Kevin McCabe continues to rewrite the school record in his first season with the program. The former Pine-Richland standout set the singleseason school record for passing yards with 2,859 to break the 18-year old mark set by Sam Mannery. He has also thrown 28 touchdown passes, eclipsing the mark of 25 set last season by Joe Ruggiero. A Harlon Hill candidate, McCabe is also within reach of breaking the single-season mark for completions that was set in 1984.

PILING UP THE YARDS: Behind one of the most balanced offenses in the country and the nation, the Vulcans have eclipsed single-season school records for passing, total offense and all-purpose yards. Offensive coordinator Mike Kellar has directed an offense that ranks No. 14 in the country with 449.08 yards per game (5,389), breaking last year’s school record of 5,292 set in 14 games. Cal U also ranks No. 12 in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 38.67 points per game. The Vulcans have scored 464 points in 12 games this year, just 38 points shy of the record set last season.

WELCOME ADDITION: Wide receiver Marcel Pestano continues to rank among the nation’s top playmakers and is fast approaching two single-school records that have stood for 25 years. He is nearing the single-season marks for receiving yards and receptions set by All-American Perry Kemp in 1983 before he played five seasons in the NFL. Pestano has posted four 100-yard games this season and scored a touchdown in eight contests, including four multi-touchdown games. SOMETHING SPECIAL: The Vulcans feature one of the top special teams unit in not only the PSAC, but also the country. Cal U ranks second in the nation with in kickoff returns, averaging 27.36 yards per return. Junior running back Freddie Bacco and junior Terrence Johnson have each returned a kickoff for a touchdown this season. Graduate student punter Derek Fiorenza and the punt coverage team has Cal U ranked No. 5 in the country in net punting at 37.11 yards per punt. SPREADING THE WEALTH: The Cal U offense features one of the deepest group of skilled players in the region. The Vulcans have completed passes to 15 different players and touchdown passes to seven different players in 2008. FLIGHTS CANCELLED: Aided by an improving pass rush and three starters in the secondary returning from last season, the Vulcans are ranked No. 19 in the nation in pass defense and No. 14 in pass efficiency defense. Cal U is allowing only 164.92 passing yards per game with opponents passing for 150-plus yards in only six of 12 games. Junior cornerback Terrence Johnson ranks tied for second in the conference with five interceptions this year, while as a team the Vulcans are also second in the PSAC with 14 interceptions by eight different players.

CALIFORNIA – In the season-opener, the No. 5 Vulcans featured an explosive offense led by quarterback Kevin McCabe and receiver Marcel Pestano en route to a 44-32 victory over No. 16 West Chester. The win extends the Vulcans’ regular-season win streak to 12 games. McCabe completed 30-of-36 attempts for 297 yards with two touchdowns – both to Pestano, who posted 11 catches for 112 yards. Cal amassed a total of 517 yards of total offense against West Chester, including 220 yards on the ground. Senior running back Daine Williams led all players with 102 yards on 17 carries with two touchdowns. With the Golden Rams leading 19-16 at halftime, the Vulcans seized control of the contest in the second half by scoring 21-straight points in the third quarter with three touchdowns. The Golden Rams trimmed the deficit to 37-25 with a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, however, the Vulcans sealed the victory with a seven-yard score by senior Brandon Lombardy with 8:13 left in the game to increase the lead to 44-25. BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 6) – After trailing by 14 points at halftime against No. 18 Bloomsburg, the Vulcans rallied to tie the contest at 14-14 before the Huskies scored 10-straight points en route to a 24-17 victory at Redman Stadium. The loss snaps a 12-game regular season winning streak by Cal U. With the constant rainfall due to the path of Tropical Storm Hanna, the play selection for both teams was shifted to the running game. Bloomsburg amassed 325 yards and two touchdowns on 55 carries. Meanwhile, Cal used its trio of running backs to finish the game with 196 rushing yards and one touchdown on 41 attempts. Senior running back Daine Williams paced the Vulcans’ ground game with 90 yards on 17 attempts. The Huskies took a 14-0 lead into halftime after rushing for 220 yards on 31 carries in the opening two quarters. However, the Vulcans answered from a halftime deficit with an impressive third quarter by scoring touchdowns on a 49-yard completion from quarterback Kevin McCabe to wide receiver Marcel Pestano and a 38-yard run by sophomore Windell Brown. Bloomsburg responded with a 35-yard field goal before the Huskies returned a McCabe interception 52 yards to claim a 24-14 lead with only eight second left in the third quarter. CALIFORNIA (Sept. 13) – The No. 16 Vulcans featured six different players that scored touchdowns in a 54-0 victory against Lake Erie. As a team, the Vulcans rushed for 347 yards and five touchdowns on 39 attempts against the Storm. Junior running back Freddie Bacco led all players with a career-high 143 yards and one touchdown on 11 attempts. Senior Brandon Lombardy rushed for 76 yards and a pair of touchdowns on six carries. He became just the third player in school history to rush for 3,000-plus yards in a career (3,019). Already leading 14-0, senior Marcel Pestano capped the scoring in the first quarter with a 45-yard punt return for a touchdown. His punt return for a touchdown was the first by a Vulcan since Marc Huddleston returned a punt for a score at Mansfield in 2005 (Sept. 10). Pestano also received one of two touchdown passes by graduate student Kevin McCabe, who completed 11-of-15 attempts for 177 yards with no interceptions while playing just the first half. In addition to the high-scoring offense, the Vulcans were dominant on defense in the first half, allowing Lake Erie to collect only three first downs and 24 yards of total offense. Junior linebacker Matt McClellan led the Vulcans’ defense with seven tackles, 2.0 TFL and 1.5 sacks, while junior defensive lineman Willie Walker registered a team-best 2.0 sacks in the contest.
EDINBORO, Pa. (Sept. 20) – The No. 14 Vulcans scored the eventual game-winning touchdown with 4:54 left in the fourth quarter before the defense forced a three-and-out, as the Cal U team edged No. 23 Edinboro, 35-31, at Sox Harrison Stadium in front of over 7,000 fans. Sophomore Windell Brown gave the Vulcans the lead late in the fourth on a four-yard touchdown with 4:54 remaining in the game. After starting the ensuing drive deep in its own territory, Edinboro was forced to punt with 3:20 left in the game. Cal U then collected two first downs before running out the clock. Senior running back Daine Williams led the ground game for Cal U with 140 rushing yards on 17 attempts, while quarterback Kevin McCabe finished the game with 274 passing yards on 18-of-31 attempts with two touchdowns and an interception. After the Vulcans held a 21-3 lead early in the second quarter, the Fighting Scots managed to trim the deficit to 21-17 at halftime. Edinboro claimed its first lead of the game in the opening minutes of the third quarter before Cal U seized control of the game on the Fighting Scots next possession when junior Terrance Johnson recovered a fumble at the Edinboro 29-yard line. Using the short field, Cal regained the lead at 28-24 when McCabe found junior A.J. Jackson for a score. Senior linebacker Jake Howell led the Vulcans with nine tackles (six solo), while fellow linebacker Brent Whiteleather added seven tackles.

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 27) – No. 14 Cal U team managed to hold on to a third-quarter lead to claim a 21-19 victory over rival No. 12 Indiana at Adamson Stadium. The victory marks back-to-back wins by Cal U over IUP for the first time since the 1981-82 seasons. It also snapped a 27-year losing streak to the Crimson Hawks at California. The Vulcans took a 21-6 lead in the opening minutes of the third quarter when quarterback Kevin McCabe connected with fullback Shawn Johnson for a three-yard touchdown pass. IUP responded with a touchdown in both the third and fourth quarters before the Cal U defense stopped a Crimson Hawk two-point conversion attempt with 5:27 left in the game. Following the Crimson Hawks’ final touchdown, the Vulcans answered with an 11-play drive that covered the final five-plus minutes of the game. Cal U converted a crucial fourth-and-five play from the IUP 20-yard line with McCabe finding freshman wide receiver Josh Gumbert across the middle for a nine-yard gain. McCabe finished the game with 239 passing yards and three touchdowns on 20-of-35 attempts with no interceptions against an IUP defense that entered the game ranked No. 1 in total defense. The Vulcans defense held the Crimson Hawks to only 19 points after IUP entered the game as the top-rated scoring offense and No. 9 in total offense. The win by Cal U marks a personal milestone for seventh-year head coach John Luckhardt, who became just the third coach in school history to total 50 career wins. CALIFORNIA (Oct. 11) – Behind five touchdown passes from Kevin McCabe, including three scores to wide receiver Marcel Pestano, No. 8 Cal U cruised to a 56-3 Homecoming victory against Lock Haven. McCabe threw for a season-high 310 yards on 19-of-26 attempts with five touchdowns and no interceptions. Pestano finished the game with six receptions for a season-best 150 yards and three touchdowns. The Cal U offense scored touchdowns on eight of its 11 total possessions in the contest jumping out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter behind a pair of McCabe-to-Pestano touchdowns (36, 12 yards). In the opening seconds of the second quarter, McCabe connected with junior A.J. Jackson for a 16-yard score. The two teams then exchanged field goals in the remainder of the quarter before the Vulcans took a 22-3 lead into halftime. CALIFORNIA (Oct. 25) - No. 6 Cal U earned at least a share of its fourth-straight PSAC West title with a 31-10 victory over Slippery Rock. After a sluggish first quarter in which Slippery Rock held a 10-3 lead, Cal U claimed control of the game with three touchdowns in the second quarter. Senior running back Daine Williams gave the Vulcans a 10-7 lead with 12:00 minutes left before halftime. Williams finished the game with 99 yards and a career-high three touchdowns on 25 attempts. Williams scored another touchdown on the next Cal U possession before the Vulcans increased their lead to 24-7 with a 41-yard scoring scamper by sophomore Windell Brown. Williams scored his final touchdown with 2:45 left in the third quarter which concluded a 15-play, 92-yard drive for the Vulcans, who finished with a 21-plus minute advantage in time of possession. The Vulcans finished divisional play with a perfect 7-0 mark and will make their first appearance in the “State Game” since 1984. Cal U jumped out to a 17-0 halftime lead before the defense sealed the victory with a pair of second-half interceptions, including an interception in the end zone by outside linebacker Matt McClellan. The Vulcans took an early 3-0 lead before the Cal U offense engineered a methodical 12-play, 96-yard drive capped with a one-yard touchdown run by senior running back Daine Williams. CALIFORNIA (Nov. 8) – The No. 7 Vulcans secured their position in the NCAA playoffs for a second-straight year with a 47-36 victory over No. 17 West Chester in the PSAC Championship Game. In the victory, graduate student quarterback Kevin McCabe set a single-game school record with 443 passing yards and tied the singleseason school record with 25 touchdown passes. He completed 25-of-34 attempts for 443 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. The Vulcans featured a pair of 100-yard receivers in graduate student Marcel Pestano and junior AJ Jackson. Pestano finished the game with 170 yards and three touchdowns on a game-high 11 catches, while Jackson set a career high with 193 receiving yards and a touchdown on six receptions (32.2 yards per catch). The match-up between the two nationally-ranked programs featured over 1,000 yards of combined total offense (Cal U 640, West Chester 440). The Vulcans held a significant advantage in time of possession, collecting 31 first downs and the 73 combined points ranks as the second-highest total in the history of the “State Game.” The win also tied head coach John Luckhardt for first place in school history with 55 wins, tying the mark set by Ted Nemeth. CALIFORNIA (Nov. 22) - Behind a stellar defensive performance and a quick-strike offense, the No. 7 Vulcans registered a 48-7 victory over Seton Hill in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Quarterback Kevin McCabe set a pair of single-season school records in the victory after passing for 253 yards and three touchdowns. The signal-caller set records for 2,859 passing yards and 28 touchdown passes. Against the Griffins, he completed 19-of-24 attempts (79.1 percent) with no interceptions. In the victory, wide receiver Marcel Pestano registered seven receptions for 140 yards and two touchdowns. He is the first receiver in recent program history to surpass the 1,000-yard mark in a season. With the victory, head coach John Luckhardt is in sole possession of first place in school history with 56 career wins. The Cal U defense limited Seton Hill to only 211 yards of total offense, almost 175 yards less than the season average. The Vulcans registered five sacks and allowed the Griffins to convert only 2-of-13 third-down attempts. Defensively, linebackers Matt McClellan and Gabe Hernandez recorded a team-high seven tackles.
