VULCANS WIN FIRST-EVER COAL BOWL: Quarterback Josh Portis threw four touchdowns, including a pair of firstquarter scores to Terrance Moore, as Cal U beat rival IUP, 41-28, in the first-ever Coal Bowl last week. The Vulcans have now won threestraight games against IUP for the first time since 1958-61. Senior wide receiver A.J. Jackson scored three touchdowns in the win. GAME NOTES LOCK HAVEN HEAD COACH: John Klacik is in his fifth season as head coach of the Bald Eagles, posting a 5-44 mark. Prior to his stint at Lock Haven, Klacik worked 17 years as assistant at the Division I and Division I-AA levels between Youngstown State and Wake Forest. He is a 1988 graduate from Lock Haven and played wide receiver for the Bald Eagles, finishing his career among the all-time leaders in receptions and receiving yards. SCOUTING THE BALD EAGLES: Lock Haven returns 19 starters from last year’s team that finished 0-11 overall. The Bald Eagles’ offense anchors around the versatile play of junior running Ibrahim Smith. Smith ranks among the school’s all-time leaders in several categories, including rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. This year, he leads the team in rushing (89 yards), receptions (14) and touchdowns (two). Redshirt freshman Jarrett Kratzer has taken the majority of snaps at quarterback in his first year playing at the college level. Junior linebacker Wes Plummer is tied for the team lead in tackles after making 64 stops (31 solo) last year. Fellow linebacker Luke Ellison tops the Bald Eagles with 5.0 tackles for loss (TFL) and 2.0 sacks.

IF LESS IS GOOD, MOORE IS BETTER: Over the last three weeks, junior wide Mike T. Jacobs (Wittenberg ‘72) - 1st season receiver Terrance Moore has proven to be a key playmaker for the Vulcan offense. During that span, the transfer from Mesa Community College Offensive Coordinator (Ariz.) has scored five touchdowns on 13 receptions for 230 yards (17.7 D’Monn Baker (California ‘04) - 3rd season yards/reception). LUCKY 200: Cal U head coach John Luckhardt is on the verge of reaching a personal milestone. Already the winningest Vulcan football coach, he is currently sixth among active NCAA Division II head coaches with 198 career victories. Only five active head coaches have earned 200 wins. RETURN OF BROWN: After missing most of four games due to injury, junior running back Windell Brown saw his first significant action since the seasonopener last week at IUP. Brown finished the game with a season-high 55 yards on 12 carries with a long of 23 yards. The talented Duquesne product opened the year as the starter after averaging almost 7.0 yards/carry in his first two years with the program.

GAME NOTES TOUCHDOWN STREAK: Senior wide receiver A.J. Jackson continues to be one of the top playmaking receivers in the nation this year. The 6-6 senior leads all PSAC receivers and is second overall in the conference with nine touchdowns. Jackson has scored at least one touchdown in each of the last five games, including a season-high three scores last week at IUP. He is among the league leaders with 34 receptions and 471 receiving yards through six games this season. Last year against Lock Haven, Jackson scored a touchdown on both his catches. WINNING WAYS: The Vulcans have won 45 of their last 53 games (.849) overall, dating back to the start of the 2005 season. Cal U has posted a 29-4 record (.879) in regular-season games since the 2006 campaign. DUAL THREAT: Cal U quarterback Josh Portis has established himself as one of the top dual-threat signal callers in the PSAC. He currently ranks sixth in the league with 226.2 yards of total offense per game with almost 1,400 passing yards and over 200 rushing yards. Portis is showing his maturation in the offense by throwing 14 touchdowns with no interceptions over the last 15 quarters. STEPPING UP, AGAIN: Junior linebacker Anthony Roberts made the most of his first start with the Vulcans last week at IUP. Starting in place of the team’s leading tackler due to injury, Roberts led the team with nine tackles (four solo) and collected 1.0 tackle for loss (TFL), 0.5 sack and one pass break-up. Earlier this year, the New Jersey native made a season-high 10 stops at West Chester after an injury occurred to one of the starting inside linebackers in the first half. In six games, Roberts ranks second on the team with 31 tackles (16 solo). CLICK, CLICK, SCORE: During its current four-game win streak, the Cal U offense has averaged an impressive 39.5 yards/game and 399.0 yards/total offense after scoring only a combined 27 points in the first two games of the season. The Vulcans have excelled in ball security during that span, committing only three turnovers. Cal U has also scored on 15-of-17 trips inside the red-zone over the last four games. MEETINGS IN THE BACKFIELD: With all three starters returning from last year’s defensive front, the Vulcans have excelled in pressuring the quarterback and tackling ball carriers behind the line of scrimmage this year. Through six games, Cal U is fourth in the 16-team PSAC with 17 sacks and also has registered 42 tackles for loss (TFL). Graduate student linebacker Dontey Brown leads the Vulcans with 6.0 TFL and 3.0 sacks, while defensive linemen Brandon Gordon and Marcus Cook both have 5.0 TFL. The Cal U defense should again be attacking the Lock Haven quarterback this weekend, as the Bald Eagles have surrendered a conference-worst 27 sacks. ON THE MARK: Over the last three weeks, junior kicker Mark Domonkos has made 13-of-13 PAT attempts and three-of-four field goals. A transfer from Lock Haven, Domonkos drilled field goals of 34 and 37 yards last week in the win at IUP. SPECIAL RETURNS: Cal U leads the league and ranks fifth in the country in kickoff returns at 27.96 yards/return. Making the average more impressive is the fact that seven different Vulcans have returned kicks this season. Sophomore wide receiver Chedrick Cherry leads the PSAC and ranks third in the nation with an average of 34.8 yards on eight returns. Senior All-American cornerback Terrence Johnson also averages 27.7 yards on a teamhigh 10 returns.

CALIFORNIA – The No. 8 Vulcans committed three turnovers and allowed a safety in a 23-17 season-opening loss to Saginaw Valley (Mich.). Cal U rallied to take a 17-14 lead before Saginaw Valley scored nine-straight points on a touchdown and safety to close out the game. In his Vulcan debut, quarterback Josh Portis led the team with 82 rushing yards on 12 carries and threw for 145 yards. The 6-4 signal caller completed 14-of-31 passes with two interceptions – both off deflections and no touchdowns. Cal U took the game’s first lead late in the first quarter when senior running back Freddie Bacco scored the first of his two touchdowns. After Saginaw Valley evened the score at 7-7, Cal U blocked a punt for a safety but fumbled the ensuing free kick which the Cardinals recovered and used to take a 14-9 lead. An interception by safety Erik Harris led to Bacco’s second score before Saginaw scored on a pass late in the third quarter. The Cardinals then sealed the game with a safety in the final five minutes of the game. Linebacker Dontey Brown registered a game- and career-high 11 tackles (seven solo) with 3.0 tackles for loss (TFL), while Sam Fikaris also established a career mark with 10 stops, 1.5 TFL and 1.0 sack. CALIFORNIA – No. 17 Cal U suffered a tough loss at Adamson Stadium, falling 17-10 in the final minute to No. 6 Bloomsburg. The Vulcans rallied to the tie the game with one minute remaining, but allowed the game-winning touchdown with only 22 seconds left. After a defensive battle for three-plus quarters, the two teams scored a combined 21 points in the final 4:29 of the game. The Huskies broke a 3-3 tie when Branden Wright recovered a fumble for a touchdown on a muffed punt return. The Vulcans answered on their ensuing possession with an eight-play, 59-yard drive capped by an 18-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Josh Portis to wide receiver A.J. Jackson. With the score tied and less than a minute remaining, Bloomsburg mounted the game-winning drive behind the play of quarterback Dan Latorre, who was sacked five times in the game. From near midfield, he connected on a 47-yard completion to the Vulcans’ four-yard line before throwing the game-winning score with 22 seconds left. Cal U held Bloomsburg, who ranked fourth in the nation in rushing last year, to only 104 rushing yards on 37 attempts. Linebacker Dontey Brown led the Vulcans and registered a career-high 12 tackles with 1.0 TFL and 1.0 sack. WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Trailing 10-0 late in the first quarter, freshman Rontez Miles blocked and returned a punt for a touchdown to help propel the Vulcans to a 30-23 road victory over No. 21 West Chester at John A. Farrell Stadium. After West Chester scored the first 10 points of the game, Cal U out-scored West Chester 30-13 over the final 48-plus minutes of the game. With their offense struggling, the Vulcans turned the momentum when Miles blocked a Golden Rams’ punt and return the punt for a touchdown. The teams entered halftime tied at 13-13, as the Cal U defense allowed West Chester only one touchdown and two field goals despite the Golden Rams mounting seven drives beyond midfield. The Vulcans then claimed only their second lead of the season by scoring a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter, 27-20. After West Chester trimmed the lead to 27-23 with a field goal early in the fourth, the Cal U defense forced a pair of turnovers on downs late in the game to seal the win. Josh Portis passed for 202 yards and two touchdowns. CALIFORNIA (Sept. 19) – Quarterback Josh Portis threw five touchdowns, including three to wide receiver A.J. Jackson, to help lead Cal U to a dominating 52-10 victory against Gannon at Adamson Stadium in the PSAC West-opener. Playing only the first three quarters, Portis completed 17-of-26 attempts for a career-high 262 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions. He also added 40 rushing yards on two attempts, highlighted by a 31-yard scramble that set-up another touchdown. Jackson established career highs with his eight receptions and had three first-quarter touchdowns (40, 4, 7). The 6-6 senior totaled 119 yards on the eight catches and six of his eight receptions resulted in first downs. The Vulcans’ defense allowed the Golden Knights only 110 yards of total offense, recorded six sacks and forced two fumbles. Gannon senior running back Jon Richardson entered the game as the only PSAC running back to rush for 100-plus yards in each of the season’s first three games; however, Cal U allowed Richardson to gain only 29 yards on 12 attempts. CALIFORNIA – The Vulcans twice rallied to take the lead in the fourth quarter before sealing a 35-31 victory over Clarion with an interception as time expired in PSAC West play. Trailing 31-28 with 4:33 left in the game, the Vulcans engineered a seven-play, 71-yard game-winning drive capped with a 47-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Josh Portis to wide receiver Chedrick Cherry with 1:01 remaining. The play before the go-ahead score, Cal U converted a critical fourth-and-one with a two-yard run near midfield by fullback Shawn Johnson. After a penalty on the ensuing kickoff, Clarion took possession of the ball near midfield to start the game’s final offensive drive. The Golden Eagles worked the ball down to the Vulcans’ 27-yard line before defensive back Mike Brown intercepted the ball near the goal line as time expired. Portis finished the game with 201 passing yards on 13-of-21 completions with three touchdowns and no interceptions. During the fourth quarter, he completed fourof-six attempts for 66 yards with the game-winning score to Cherry. He also added 33 rushing yards on eight rushes in the game. INDIANA, Pa. – Cal U captured the first-ever Coal Bowl against rival IUP with a 41-28 win at Miller Stadium in PSAC West action. The Vulcans have now defeated IUP threestraight years for the first time since the 1958-61 seasons. Quarterback Josh Portis continued his efficient play, passing for 197 yards and four touchdowns and no interceptions. Over the last 15 quarters, he has thrown 14 touchdown passes with no interceptions. Portis also collected four first downs on the ground against IUP. Wide receiver A.J. Jackson tied his career high with three touchdown catches (24, 34, 32), posting 102 yards on five receptions. Fellow receiver Terrance Moore had two firstquarter touchdown receptions (7, 67) and also completed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Jackson in the third quarter. In his first start as a Vulcan, linebacker Anthony Roberts collected a team-high nine tackles (four solo) with 1.0 TFL, 0.5 sack and one pass break-up. History
GAME NOTES LOCK HAVEN HEAD COACH: John Klacik is in his fifth season as head coach of the Bald Eagles, posting a 5-44 mark. Prior to his stint at Lock Haven, Klacik worked 17 years as assistant at the Division I and Division I-AA levels between Youngstown State and Wake Forest. He is a 1988 graduate from Lock Haven and played wide receiver for the Bald Eagles, finishing his career among the all-time leaders in receptions and receiving yards. SCOUTING THE BALD EAGLES: Lock Haven returns 19 starters from last year’s team that finished 0-11 overall. The Bald Eagles’ offense anchors around the versatile play of junior running Ibrahim Smith. Smith ranks among the school’s all-time leaders in several categories, including rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. This year, he leads the team in rushing (89 yards), receptions (14) and touchdowns (two). Redshirt freshman Jarrett Kratzer has taken the majority of snaps at quarterback in his first year playing at the college level. Junior linebacker Wes Plummer is tied for the team lead in tackles after making 64 stops (31 solo) last year. Fellow linebacker Luke Ellison tops the Bald Eagles with 5.0 tackles for loss (TFL) and 2.0 sacks.

LUCKY 200: Cal U head coach John Luckhardt is on the verge of reaching a personal milestone. Already the winningest Vulcan football coach, he is currently sixth among active NCAA Division II head coaches with 198 career victories. Only five active head coaches have earned 200 wins. RETURN OF BROWN: After missing most of four games due to injury, junior running back Windell Brown saw his first significant action since the seasonopener last week at IUP. Brown finished the game with a season-high 55 yards on 12 carries with a long of 23 yards. The talented Duquesne product opened the year as the starter after averaging almost 7.0 yards/carry in his first two years with the program.

GAME NOTES TOUCHDOWN STREAK: Senior wide receiver A.J. Jackson continues to be one of the top playmaking receivers in the nation this year. The 6-6 senior leads all PSAC receivers and is second overall in the conference with nine touchdowns. Jackson has scored at least one touchdown in each of the last five games, including a season-high three scores last week at IUP. He is among the league leaders with 34 receptions and 471 receiving yards through six games this season. Last year against Lock Haven, Jackson scored a touchdown on both his catches. WINNING WAYS: The Vulcans have won 45 of their last 53 games (.849) overall, dating back to the start of the 2005 season. Cal U has posted a 29-4 record (.879) in regular-season games since the 2006 campaign. DUAL THREAT: Cal U quarterback Josh Portis has established himself as one of the top dual-threat signal callers in the PSAC. He currently ranks sixth in the league with 226.2 yards of total offense per game with almost 1,400 passing yards and over 200 rushing yards. Portis is showing his maturation in the offense by throwing 14 touchdowns with no interceptions over the last 15 quarters. STEPPING UP, AGAIN: Junior linebacker Anthony Roberts made the most of his first start with the Vulcans last week at IUP. Starting in place of the team’s leading tackler due to injury, Roberts led the team with nine tackles (four solo) and collected 1.0 tackle for loss (TFL), 0.5 sack and one pass break-up. Earlier this year, the New Jersey native made a season-high 10 stops at West Chester after an injury occurred to one of the starting inside linebackers in the first half. In six games, Roberts ranks second on the team with 31 tackles (16 solo). CLICK, CLICK, SCORE: During its current four-game win streak, the Cal U offense has averaged an impressive 39.5 yards/game and 399.0 yards/total offense after scoring only a combined 27 points in the first two games of the season. The Vulcans have excelled in ball security during that span, committing only three turnovers. Cal U has also scored on 15-of-17 trips inside the red-zone over the last four games. MEETINGS IN THE BACKFIELD: With all three starters returning from last year’s defensive front, the Vulcans have excelled in pressuring the quarterback and tackling ball carriers behind the line of scrimmage this year. Through six games, Cal U is fourth in the 16-team PSAC with 17 sacks and also has registered 42 tackles for loss (TFL). Graduate student linebacker Dontey Brown leads the Vulcans with 6.0 TFL and 3.0 sacks, while defensive linemen Brandon Gordon and Marcus Cook both have 5.0 TFL. The Cal U defense should again be attacking the Lock Haven quarterback this weekend, as the Bald Eagles have surrendered a conference-worst 27 sacks. ON THE MARK: Over the last three weeks, junior kicker Mark Domonkos has made 13-of-13 PAT attempts and three-of-four field goals. A transfer from Lock Haven, Domonkos drilled field goals of 34 and 37 yards last week in the win at IUP. SPECIAL RETURNS: Cal U leads the league and ranks fifth in the country in kickoff returns at 27.96 yards/return. Making the average more impressive is the fact that seven different Vulcans have returned kicks this season. Sophomore wide receiver Chedrick Cherry leads the PSAC and ranks third in the nation with an average of 34.8 yards on eight returns. Senior All-American cornerback Terrence Johnson also averages 27.7 yards on a teamhigh 10 returns.

CALIFORNIA – The No. 8 Vulcans committed three turnovers and allowed a safety in a 23-17 season-opening loss to Saginaw Valley (Mich.). Cal U rallied to take a 17-14 lead before Saginaw Valley scored nine-straight points on a touchdown and safety to close out the game. In his Vulcan debut, quarterback Josh Portis led the team with 82 rushing yards on 12 carries and threw for 145 yards. The 6-4 signal caller completed 14-of-31 passes with two interceptions – both off deflections and no touchdowns. Cal U took the game’s first lead late in the first quarter when senior running back Freddie Bacco scored the first of his two touchdowns. After Saginaw Valley evened the score at 7-7, Cal U blocked a punt for a safety but fumbled the ensuing free kick which the Cardinals recovered and used to take a 14-9 lead. An interception by safety Erik Harris led to Bacco’s second score before Saginaw scored on a pass late in the third quarter. The Cardinals then sealed the game with a safety in the final five minutes of the game. Linebacker Dontey Brown registered a game- and career-high 11 tackles (seven solo) with 3.0 tackles for loss (TFL), while Sam Fikaris also established a career mark with 10 stops, 1.5 TFL and 1.0 sack. CALIFORNIA – No. 17 Cal U suffered a tough loss at Adamson Stadium, falling 17-10 in the final minute to No. 6 Bloomsburg. The Vulcans rallied to the tie the game with one minute remaining, but allowed the game-winning touchdown with only 22 seconds left. After a defensive battle for three-plus quarters, the two teams scored a combined 21 points in the final 4:29 of the game. The Huskies broke a 3-3 tie when Branden Wright recovered a fumble for a touchdown on a muffed punt return. The Vulcans answered on their ensuing possession with an eight-play, 59-yard drive capped by an 18-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Josh Portis to wide receiver A.J. Jackson. With the score tied and less than a minute remaining, Bloomsburg mounted the game-winning drive behind the play of quarterback Dan Latorre, who was sacked five times in the game. From near midfield, he connected on a 47-yard completion to the Vulcans’ four-yard line before throwing the game-winning score with 22 seconds left. Cal U held Bloomsburg, who ranked fourth in the nation in rushing last year, to only 104 rushing yards on 37 attempts. Linebacker Dontey Brown led the Vulcans and registered a career-high 12 tackles with 1.0 TFL and 1.0 sack. WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Trailing 10-0 late in the first quarter, freshman Rontez Miles blocked and returned a punt for a touchdown to help propel the Vulcans to a 30-23 road victory over No. 21 West Chester at John A. Farrell Stadium. After West Chester scored the first 10 points of the game, Cal U out-scored West Chester 30-13 over the final 48-plus minutes of the game. With their offense struggling, the Vulcans turned the momentum when Miles blocked a Golden Rams’ punt and return the punt for a touchdown. The teams entered halftime tied at 13-13, as the Cal U defense allowed West Chester only one touchdown and two field goals despite the Golden Rams mounting seven drives beyond midfield. The Vulcans then claimed only their second lead of the season by scoring a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter, 27-20. After West Chester trimmed the lead to 27-23 with a field goal early in the fourth, the Cal U defense forced a pair of turnovers on downs late in the game to seal the win. Josh Portis passed for 202 yards and two touchdowns. CALIFORNIA (Sept. 19) – Quarterback Josh Portis threw five touchdowns, including three to wide receiver A.J. Jackson, to help lead Cal U to a dominating 52-10 victory against Gannon at Adamson Stadium in the PSAC West-opener. Playing only the first three quarters, Portis completed 17-of-26 attempts for a career-high 262 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions. He also added 40 rushing yards on two attempts, highlighted by a 31-yard scramble that set-up another touchdown. Jackson established career highs with his eight receptions and had three first-quarter touchdowns (40, 4, 7). The 6-6 senior totaled 119 yards on the eight catches and six of his eight receptions resulted in first downs. The Vulcans’ defense allowed the Golden Knights only 110 yards of total offense, recorded six sacks and forced two fumbles. Gannon senior running back Jon Richardson entered the game as the only PSAC running back to rush for 100-plus yards in each of the season’s first three games; however, Cal U allowed Richardson to gain only 29 yards on 12 attempts. CALIFORNIA – The Vulcans twice rallied to take the lead in the fourth quarter before sealing a 35-31 victory over Clarion with an interception as time expired in PSAC West play. Trailing 31-28 with 4:33 left in the game, the Vulcans engineered a seven-play, 71-yard game-winning drive capped with a 47-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Josh Portis to wide receiver Chedrick Cherry with 1:01 remaining. The play before the go-ahead score, Cal U converted a critical fourth-and-one with a two-yard run near midfield by fullback Shawn Johnson. After a penalty on the ensuing kickoff, Clarion took possession of the ball near midfield to start the game’s final offensive drive. The Golden Eagles worked the ball down to the Vulcans’ 27-yard line before defensive back Mike Brown intercepted the ball near the goal line as time expired. Portis finished the game with 201 passing yards on 13-of-21 completions with three touchdowns and no interceptions. INDIANA, Pa. – Cal U captured the first-ever Coal Bowl against rival IUP with a 41-28 win at Miller Stadium in PSAC West action. The Vulcans have now defeated IUP threestraight years for the first time since the 1958-61 seasons. Quarterback Josh Portis continued his efficient play, passing for 197 yards and four touchdowns and no interceptions. Over the last 15 quarters, he has thrown 14 touchdown passes with no interceptions. Portis also collected four first downs on the ground against IUP. Wide receiver A.J. Jackson tied his career high with three touchdown catches (24, 34, 32), posting 102 yards on five receptions. Fellow receiver Terrance Moore had two firstquarter touchdown receptions (7, 67) and also completed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Jackson in the third quarter. In his first start as a Vulcan, linebacker Anthony Roberts collected a team-high nine tackles (four solo) with 1.0 TFL, 0.5 sack and one pass break-up. True freshman safety Rontez Miles made eight stops (five solo), while four Vulcans finished with five tackles.
