GAME NOTES SETON HILL HEAD COACH: One of four first-year head coaches in the PSAC, Isaac Collins spent the previous three seasons as the head coach and defensive coordinator at Widener (Pa.). He led the Pride to a 25-8 overall record while boasting one of the nation’s top-scoring offenses. Last year, Collins guided Widener to an 11-1 overall record and an appearance in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Playoffs. Collins previously served as an assistant coach at multiple FCS programs, most recently as the defensive coordinator at The Citadel from 2006-09. SCOUTING THE GRIFFINS: Seton Hill returns 11 starters from a team that finished 0-11 overall in its last year as members of the WVIAC. The Griffins are averaging just 226.2 yards of total offense per game this year, which ranks as the third-worst mark in NCAA Division II. Seton Hill has started four different quarterbacks in the opening half of the year and are projected to start a new quarterback this week. Sophomore Nick Halfhill leads the team with 626 passing yards after starting three of the last five games, while freshman Jarvis McClam started last game at quarterback and leads the team with 109 rushing yards. Junior Norman Darden paces the receiving corps with four touchdowns and averages over 15 yards per catch. Seton Hill allows an average of 48.8 points per game this year, which ranks as the fourth-worst mark in the country. Junior linebacker Tyler Zimmer leads the team with 47 tackles (27 solo) this year after ranking among the top 20 in the country in tackles (121), TFL (23.5) and sacks (12.0) last season. Fellow linebackers Tim Johnson and Chase Parker are tied for second on the team with 40 stops. Parker ranks among the top 10 in the PSAC this season with 7.0 TFL and 4.0 sacks. Darden has been one of several players to serve as a return specialist this year and averages 32.3 yards on kick returns. Seton Hill enters the weekend tied for most kicks blocked (five) in the country and ranks next-tolast in NCAA Division II in terms of kickoff coverage, allowing 29.3 yards per return. KELLAR vs. SETON HILL: Cal U head coach Mike Kellar earned a pair of victories over Seton Hill while at Concord from 2009-10. In his first year as head coach, Kellar led the Mountain Lions to a 52-34 victory after rushing for nearly 500 yards and six touchdowns. The following year, Concord posted a 28-17 victory at Offutt Field in Greensburg despite committing 19 penalties. PRESEASON PREDICTIONS: For the first time since 2004, the Vulcans failed to earn at least a share of the top spot in the preseason PSAC West poll. Cal U was selected fourth in the league poll by the coaches after losing its last two divisional games in 2012. Meanwhile, Seton Hill was picked to finish eighth in the division after going winless in its last year in the WVIAC. TOP MARK, STILL: Against IUP, sophomore Andrew Cerett recorded the longest punt in NCAA Division II this year at 79 yards. The distance ranks as the seventh-best punt in all NCAA divisions this year and is the longest by a Cal U punter in over a decade. Cerett led the PSAC in punting as a freshman and ranks third this season with a mark of 43.3 yards per punt. BLOCK PARTY: Cal U recorded its fifth blocked kick (three field goals, one punt, one PAT) of the season last week against Clarion when senior C.J. Goodwin blocked a punt early in the fourth quarter. It was the first punt block since the Vulcans blocked a pair of punts against Slippery Rock last season. Cal U totaled six blocked kicks last year and have combined to block 15 kicks since the start of the 2011 campaign. SPREADING THE WEALTH: In last week’s victory, Cal U quarterbacks combined to complete passes to eight different receivers. The Vulcans currently boast a dozen players with at least one reception and seven players have caught at least one touchdown pass.

GAME NOTES JACK OF ALL TREYS: Senior wide receiver Trey Johnson has totaled 350 all-purpose yards in the last two meetings versus Clarion, recording the highest two yardage games of his career. He finished with 169 all-purpose yards in last week’s win after posting 93 yards on five punt returns, 27 receiving yards on one catch and 49 rushing yards on a pair of reverses. Johnson leads the team with 501 all-purpose yards this season after setting a career-high with 1,058 yards last year. RECORD CHASER: In only two years as a starter, senior linebacker B.J. Stevens has developed into one of the top defensive playmakers in school history. He set the single-season school records for sacks and TFL last year, while leading the country in sacks per game. Stevens broke the all-time school record for sacks earlier this season and enters the weekend ranked second with 36.5 TFL, just 2.5 TFL shy of tying the record set by former teammate Thomas Mulabah. CLEAR LANES: The Vulcans rushed for a season-high 230 yards and three touchdowns in last week’s victory over Clarion. Four different players posted at least 40 rushing yards in the game with a team-high 89 yards by junior Jeff Knox, Jr. Cal U entered the game with only two rushing touchdowns in 2013 and had combined to rush for only 128 yards in its previous two games, both losses. It marked the most yards on the ground by the Vulcans since they rushed for 237 yards at Lock Haven on Oct. 1, 2011. RUN STUFFING VICTORIES: After facing two of the top running backs in the PSAC, the Vulcans limited Clarion to 109 rushing yards on 35 attempts last Saturday. Cal U enters the weekend ranked fifth in the PSAC in rushing defense at 121.2 yards per game, which is inflated with nearly a combined 450 rushing yards by IUP and West Chester. In their four wins this season, the Vulcans have allowed just 72.8 rushing yards per game with an average of only 2.3 yards per carry. CENTURY MAN: Senior wide receiver Mike Williams recorded his second 100-yard receiving game of the year last weekend, finishing with 118 yards on seven catches. He has reached the century mark a combined seven times over the last two seasons while starting all 17 games. Williams enters the weekend just over 150 yards shy of becoming the seventh player in program history with 2,000 receiving yards in a career. HARD TIMES: Since appearing in the NCAA Playoffs in 2008, Seton Hill has posted a 4-46 overall record (.080) and a 2-33 league record (.057) while playing in the WVIAC and PSAC. The Griffins appeared in the post-season in only their third year as an intercollegiate sport, finishing with a 10-3 overall record. Seton Hill enters the weekend on a 19-game losing streak with its last victory coming at West Liberty on Oct. 29, 2011. TWICE AS NICE: Last weekend, junior Jeff Knox, Jr. scored a pair of rushing touchdowns for the first time this season and seventh time in his career. He served primarily as a short-yardage specialist on offense his first two seasons and has scored 21 rushing touchdowns in his career. Knox is the seventh different player in the last decade to total at least 20 career rushing touchdowns. The Pittsburgh native leads the team with 310 rushing yards in his first season as a starter. QUICK LEARNER: True freshman defensive back Aaron Terry made his first career start in last week’s Homecoming victory over Clarion. He finished with four tackles and recorded his teamleading third interception of the year deep in Golden Eagles’ territory. Terry is one of six true freshmen to start this season for the Vulcans, including four on defense.
