Dear Raider Nation, Greetings from sunny Colgate! It took me a little while to find my sunglasses, but it was worth it! I have a lot of exciting news to share with you. First, we hired Bill Cleary as our head women's basketball coach! Bill, a graduate of Villanova, comes from Bloomsburg (NCAA Div. II) where he compiled an impressive 16469 (.704) overall record and 9742 (.698) mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in eight seasons. The Bloomsburg Huskies won just eight games the year before Bill's arrival, but he put together four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances from 201215, a PSAC title and five straight PSAC Eastern Divisional crowns. Bill, his wife Jackie and their sons Bill and Chase are excited to move to Hamilton, NY (The transition was made smoother once Billy and Chase knew they could bring their toys and beds with them ... and maybe a dog was promised as well). Thank you so much for your passion and support for our Athletics March Mania Challenge! Thursday night is our last day of our competition and please join me and some of our studentathletes on "Facebook Live" as we are broadcasting live from Colgate. So if you have not yet followed the Raiders page on Facebook, I would encourage you to do so. You'll get a notification when the live broadcast begins (6:30 p.m. ET). I was remiss in my last newsletter to not write about the national success experienced by men's squash in late February. The Raiders defeated Northwestern to win the 2016 Hawthorn Cup at the College Squash Association National Tournament! Women's Lacrosse is now 20 in the Patriot League, which is a great start to conference play. The Raiders defeated American 84 and Lafayette 1311, with both victories coming on the road! The next win for head coach Heather Young will be quite the milestone the 100th of her career and her 83rd at Colgate to move Heather alone into first on the Raider women's lacrosse coaching wins list. Men's Lacrosse has a big Patriot League home game Sunday against Loyola. If you can't be at Crown Field, you can watch via the CBS Sports Network starting at noon. Softball opens its home schedule with a midweek visit from Albany and then a key Patriot League threegame series against Army West Point. The Army games are scheduled for a Saturday doubleheader and a Sunday finale, with play starting both days at noon. Men's Golf opened its spring schedule in exciting fashion with a ninthplace result in the 21 team Villanova Wildcat Invitational. Junior captains Chris Wilson and Ryan Allison tied for third place their best finishes of the season. The team is back in action this weekend at Lafayette. Our Track and Field teams set 22 personal records over the weekend at the Lafayette 7Way Invitational. Oliver Moe (400 meters) and Jon Zeosky (800 meters) captured firstplace finishes to headline the strong showing by both squads. The teams are back in action this Saturday at Princeton at the IC4A Qualifiers.
Our rowing crews began their spring competitions Saturday at the Murphy Cup. The women advanced two boats to finals Varsity 4+ and Novice 8+ and earned a pair of fifthplace finishes. The same two boats earned finals berths on the men's side, with the Novice 8+ crew earning a sixthplace result. Men's Tennis heads into the final month of the regular season with an 114 mark, its best record since 199394. The Raiders have won six of their last eight matches, highlighted by triumphs over Drexel, La Salle, Hofstra and Siena. Sophomore Jacob Daugherty, the reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Year, boasts a 71 mark in singles play over his last eight matches. Women's Tennis is 66 overall and 10 against Patriot League competition heading into this weekend's matches for both teams at Lehigh and Bucknell. Thank you so much for your incredible support to the Colgate Athletic Council, to our March Mania Campaign and to our teams. Go 'gate, Vicky
Photo 1: It was a pleasure spending time with these great alums, who participated in the first student "sitin" at Colgate in 1968. They all came back to campus to participate in the "Tale of Two Sitins" in which they, along with the students from the 2014 student sitin, shared their experiences with a standingroomonly audience. It was very interesting listening to perspectives from two different generations.
