I was touched deeply this past week as I had the honor to be involved with the funeral service of Mrs. Marjorie Sutton. As I visited with the family, a granddaughter came to me and asked if she could give me a note to include in the service as this was the wish of the family. When I received the email, I was pleasantly surprised by the note. As a pastor for many years, some of the requests from families I receive are, well, let me just leave it at that. This letter resonated deeply within. Listen to these words: People with dementia are still people and God still has a plan for their lives. Even when they are bedridden and can do nothing at all, maybe their very life keeps us clinging to God more. Maybe their very existence draws us closer to God as we seek him and cry out to him. This is what a parent wrote who feared having Alzheimer's someday and wrote to her children. Pray and trust God to guide you. Get as much help as you can. I don't

want you to sacrifice your life plans or family for my sake but I want to always be part of your life. If you need to find a nursing home for me, I understand. Pray about it and seek wisely and visit me often. Even if I don't know you, believe in your heart that part of me does. Hold my hand and talk to me. Tell me about your life. Sing to me and read the bible to me please. Brush my hair and tell me memories of your childhood. If I'm still able to chew be sure to bring me chocolate and blizzards. And don't forget to take some time to just sit quietly next to me. Hold my wrinkled hand and let God whisper to your soul. I am so sorry you have to go through this painful journey with me, but God will give you strength and grow you through it all. Hold fast unto him, sink deep in his love. Everything will be better in heaven. Meanwhile, when I can't talk anymore just know I love you forever and being a mom and MaMa to you all was an honor and delight.
We are the family of God. Because God has filled us with His great love, we are able to love one another. Could it be that you have the wonderful privilege to infuse someone else with the power of God’s love? As God’s child, we have all been given this most incredible gift. In the name of Jesus, love others, especially if they are family or church family. As we move to a new church year, our nominating committee has been at work preparing to bring before the church a list of names to be prayed over as servants within the various ministries we support. If you have not found your place of service yet, what are you waiting for? Now is the time to get on the bus and be a part of our church family as we serve Christ and each other as His mighty witness. The Bible says, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” As we love God and each other allowing Him to change our lives so that He can use us to change the lives of others, I know the best is yet to come!
